Keith looked slightly unrecognizable thanks to Carolyn's talent. She has successfully managed to make his skin look a little bit darker and drew some scars around his face. His lips were blueish and his dark circles darker. He hid his hair under a straw hat and wore clothes he borrowed from a friend.
Carolyn left her younger brother with the neighbours and walked with her friend outside the village. They woke up earlier this morning to follow the palace guards and avoid meeting someone they knew for fear they might recognize Keith. Carolyn put her hand around his arm to pretend to be just a couple having a walk in the forest. This way, they won't look suspicious.
It took them a while to finally arrive at the palace. Carolyn widened her eyes as the building was large and occupied a space ten times bigger than their entire village.
The king felt like the entire world crumbled before him. His eyes rested on the shattered soup bowl, and his fists clenched. His breathing got heavier and louder, and his body got warmer. He walked in the middle of the room clumsily, stumbling on objects and throwing everything that got in his way. Kenneth sat on his bed and looked around, his mind travelled elsewhere, while his eyes focused on the dinner tray. The same silver platter he had seen every day and night, the same ceramic bowl he had been drinking from for years. "Poison..." he whispered as he shook his head slightly, "It had been poison all this time." he nodded and gulped as he took a long breath. Alec pressed his lips nervously and walked toward him. He hesitated for a moment before he knelt before him. "No wonder you were addicted to it," he spoke with a calm v
Alec and Kenneth followed Monica, the lady who was looking after the palace for many years until they reached the main hall. It was dark and dusty, and Monica hurried to open the curtains to let the moonlight illuminate the large round room. White dirty sheets covered chairs and tables, and spiderwebs were all over the two thrones. It looked like the palace was abandoned for a long time. After the late king and queen's death, many palaces around the kingdom became inhabited as there were no more receptions nor events to be held."My apologies, Your Majesty," Monica nervously bowed to the young king, "We have not expected any guest for so many years. My family and I have been living in a small house in the backyard. We have not entered the palace in so long."Kenneth nodded, "It is alright. I have never intended to come back here. I just needed a rest." he calmly said as he eyed Al
Alec guided Kenneth to the dining room where he was welcomed with a table full of pastries and savoury dishes. Theodore woke up early in the morning to head to the local village market to get the best ingredients to make a feast for the king. He showed off his cooking talent and made sure to look after every single detail for the breakfast to be perfect for his important guest. The king was so surprised that his eyes widened. He stopped for a moment to take a look at the table before he sat down. His breakfast in the other castle was always the same for years; bread, puffs, wine, and the famous soup — the poisoned one. He didn't waste time and started eating. He hummed after he tasted a pastry as the sweet custard cream brushed his lips and the softness of the puff pastry melted in his tongue.Alec watched Kenneth with a smile as he had never seen him enjoy his food since he stepped inside the palace. It was a refreshing view. The king's face was starting t
"I cannot believe he turned his back on us." Keith paced around the room, his hands joined behind his back, and his eyes frowned. Carolyn was watching him quietly as she brushed her little brother's hair. He has been acting that way since they saw Alec in the palace with the king. Keith thought his best friend gave up on him and his family for silver coins and an honourable position by the Mad King's side. It was almost unbelievable to see him in his guard's uniform and working so closely next to the king. "I still think my brother was forced to take that position," Carolyn said with a calm voice to avoid making Keith angrier. "Alec would never side with that mad man." she shook her head. Keith sighed and finally took a seat. "I don't know what to believe anymore," he mumbled. "If Alec really doesn't support the king, then why is looking for me?" he rubbed his chin and sighed. Palace guards have bee
Almost two weeks have passed since their arrival at the abandoned castle. Kenneth was doing better. His nightmares lessened as well as his bad temper. Alec was now sure it was because of the poison. People around the kingdom misjudged their king, even him. He wasn't the heartless man everyone thought he was. He wasn't the Mad King. Kenneth participated more in conversations now. It was only a short time since they left the main castle, but it looked like he loved Lady Monica's company, as well as her son Ferdinand, and his very good friend Theodore.Alec loved to see him talk about archery with Ferdinand or watch Theodore cook their dinner. A smile appeared on his face from time to time, and he found himself melting for him. He didn't like to show it a lot, but he started to grow very fond of Kenneth. Even more lately. The king got the best out of himself during their stay at this castle and Alec could not be more surprised by the
Carl and Joshua frowned the second they saw Alec following the king. They walked to him and grabbed his arms, "Why did you let him leave the palace without warning?!" Carl scolded.Alec shrugged, "He's the king. Why should he ask for anyone's permission?" he was starting to get angry at how everyone seemed to want to control Yoongi. All eyes were on him, imprisoning every part of his body."That's exactly why!" Joshua whispered-shouted, "He's the king! Everyone has to know where he is.""He was with me, alright?" Alec raised an eyebrow, "I'm his personal guard, remember? He doesn't need anyone else to protect him but me.""Bullshit," Carl muttered, "The prime minister and the queen nearly killed us because of your selfishness. Look what they've done to us!" he lifted
Keith was walking in the village after intense sword training in the woods. It was strange for him to train without Alec as they used to do it every morning before starting the day. Long weeks passed after Alec's departure, but it was not a mystery anymore. Keith knew his best friend was working in the palace but had no idea why and the reason behind the secrecy. He was mad at his friend for not even bothering to send him a letter and tell him what happened. How could he leave his sister and little brother alone? It was not like him. There was a crowd in the place, and men gathered around a poster glued on the wall. Keith raised an eyebrow and approached. He knew it was from the palace as he saw the royal seal at the bottom of the page."Royal Guard Selection in a fortnight. Men around sixteen and thirty are to present themselves."
Villagers and servants gathered around the arena, dressed in their finest clothing and accompanied by their loved ones for an event that only occurred every three years. The young participants wore armours and showed their fiercest looks to make an impression on the king. They stood on the sandy ground, their heads burning under the scorching sun. Their friends and families joined the spectators and cheered for them from their seats. But the screams and shouts gave place to a thunderous silence when the Mad King made his entrance. The participants stood straight, with their hands joined behind their back, and their heads high.Kenneth walked inside the arena, looking stunning, and yet very intimidating. His golden hair descended majestically on the black velvet jacket and highlighting the patterns embroidered in gold. His crown stood large and elegant over his head, and a silver mask covered his face. It was a tradition fo
