  • THE MISTAKEN MISTRESS    CHAPTER 33- WHISPERED EYES

Jane's POV Returning to work felt oddly disconcerting, it was like stepping back into a familiar space that no longer felt like mine. Perhaps it was the exhaustion weighing me down, or the lingering ache in my chest from crying until my vision blurred. Or maybe it was simply the shift in everything after last night. After… him. The elevator dinged softly as it reached the executive floor, sending my heartbeat into a panicked rhythm. I wasn’t prepared for whispered conversations or prying gazes. Honestly, I wasn’t even sure I remembered how to navigate public breathing. But I stepped out anyway. And of course, they were already watching. Two assistants by the printer halted their chatter as they spotted me. A group at the far table exchanged furtive looks, and I caught the faint sound of my name followed by a pretend cough. I tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear and gripped my bag a bit too tightly. They were undoubtedly curious about why the CEO continued to ke

  • THE MISTAKEN MISTRESS    CHAPTER 32- HOPE

Jane's POV Jane stirred awake to a gentle kind of silence, one that felt like a comforting blanket. No beeping machines, no hurried footsteps, and no heavy breathing next to her, just pure, soothing quiet. It took a moment for her to realize that she wasn’t back in her apartment, far from the chaos that had engulfed her life. Instead, she found herself in Williams’ guest room, wrapped snugly in a duvet that had the delicate scent of clean cotton mixed with something warm, perhaps him. As her eyes adjusted, she noticed the sunlight streaming through the blinds, casting soft golden lines on the wall. She blinked, her mind still hazy from the whirlwind of emotions the night before: the panic attack, the rushing tears, and Williams carrying her out of the hospital as if she were weightless. His voice echoed in her mind, reassuring her, “You’re safe. I’ve got you.” She swallowed hard, her chest constricting at the memory, though it wasn’t fear that tightened her heart. It was some

  • THE MISTAKEN MISTRESS    CHAPTER 31- VULNERABLE MOMENT

Jane's POV The drive from the hospital was enveloped in silence, an unsettling kind of quiet. It wasn’t the soothing kind; it felt instead like a weight settling heavily on my shoulders. I stared out the window, watching the city lights blur past, the world racing ahead while I felt trapped, unable to keep pace. My hands shook uncontrollably. I kept them nestled on my lap, hoping Williams wouldn’t notice, but of course, he did. He always does. He stayed silent, maybe unsure of what to say, or perhaps he feared that any words he offered would crack me open. Honestly, I was torn between the two possibilities. By the time we arrived at his home, my chest had tightened, and my breathing had turned shaky. He parked the car, stepped out, and opened the door for me with such gentleness that it felt as if I were made of glass. I loathed feeling so delicate. I hated that today exposed my vulnerability, revealing that I wasn’t as strong as I pretended to be. Once inside, the so

  • THE MISTAKEN MISTRESS    CHAPTER 30- THE SECOND COLLAPSE

Jane's POV The harsh fluorescent lights of the hospital corridor clung to my vision long after we’d left. My mother kept insisting she was okay, downplaying her fall, telling us that we should head home and get some rest. But the tension in William’s jaw during the entire drive back told a different story. He didn’t buy any of it, and my own tightening chest confirmed he was right. He walked me to my apartment door in silence. Words weren’t necessary; the air around him was thick with an unspoken protectiveness that I couldn’t quite put a name to. “Text me when you’re inside,” he said softly. I nodded and stepped into my dimly lit apartment. It looked unchanged from when I left, yet everything felt off. The silence. The lingering scent of lavender that my mother adored. The slippers neatly placed by the couch. My heart ached. She wasn’t home yet, she had insisted on checking in with the nurses first. I told myself she’d be back soon. I tried to calm my raci

  • THE MISTAKEN MISTRESS    CHAPTER 29- NEARLY SPOKEN

Jane's POV Ten minutes later, I found myself outside William's office door, my heart racing. I knocked once. “Come in,” he replied, his voice low and strained, as if he’d been walking in circles. I stepped inside. He was positioned by the large windows, hands tucked into his pockets, gazing out at the city as if he were contemplating some great challenge or destruction. “Close the door,” he instructed, still facing the view. I hesitated for just a moment before shutting it behind me. Suddenly, the room felt smaller. Warmer. Too quiet. When he finally turned to look at me, his face was neither cold nor furious. Instead, it was filled with conflict. Intense conflict. “Jane,” he started slowly, “I need to clarify a few things.” “Is this about last night?” I asked, my voice a whisper. “Yes.” He took a step closer to me. “It wasn’t coincidental,” he explained. “Your mother’s accident. The man I saw in the hallway. The warning I gave you in that building
