Chapter 5

The underground catacombs beneath the city hummed with the distant, heavy thrum of the harbor. For two days, the tunnels had been their kingdom. In the damp dark of a secondary sewer vault, Valerie had redressed Alessia’s wounds, shared cold rations, and quietly mapped out a war.

Now, the time for hiding was over.

The grand ballroom of the Moretti Estate was bathed in blinding crystal light, but the atmosphere inside was suffocating. Every underboss, captain, and soldier of the family was present. Standing at the elevated dais where the Moretti throne sat was Maddie Ferro, Alessia’s trusted underboss. She raised a crystal glass; a smug, victorious smile stretched across her face.

"To a new era," Maddie projected, her voice echoing off the gilded walls. "The Iron Queen is dead. The Moretti Syndicate will no longer bow to a girl who inherited a name. Tonight, we solidify our alliance with the rival families and take what is rightfully ours!"

The crowd cheered, raising their glasses. Maddie turned, her hand reaching for the ornate silver crown resting on a velvet pillow atop the throne.

CRASH.

The massive, double-arched stained-glass window behind the dais shattered inward in a spectacular explosion of colored glass.

Before the glass could even hit the polished marble floor, two flashbang canisters bounced down the steps of the dais, erupting in blinding white light and a deafening roar. The crowd shrieked, captains, stumbling backward, clutching their ears and eyes.

Through the smoke and raining glass, two figures descended from tactical ropes hooked to the skylights.

Valerie hit the ground first. A phantom in sleek black Kevlar, she moved with terrifying, fluid speed. Before Maddie’s personal guard could draw their weapons, Valerie raised her silenced submachine gun. Three short, muffled bursts echoed through the room. Three guards dropped instantly, their weapons clattering away.

Then stepped Alessia Moretti.

She had stripped away her civilian velvet and her tactical gear. She wore a striking, structured black suit jacket, her dark hair slicked back, her posture commanding and absolute. Her left shoulder was tightly bound, but she held a heavy gold-plated pistol in her right hand with unwavering stability.

The smoke began to clear. The captains gasped, pulling back in absolute terror.

"I believe you are sitting in my chair, Maddie," Alessia said, her voice a cold, resonant blade that sliced through the panic of the room.

Maddie staggered back, her face turning an ash-gray. "Impossible... The phantom... I paid for your execution!"

"You did," Valerie spoke up from the shadow of the pillar, her rifle still trained precisely on Maddie's forehead. "But the contract was canceled. Permanently."

"Traitors!" Maddie screamed, desperately pointing at the remaining captains in the room. "Kill them! She’s a ghost! Shoot her!"

But no one moved. The captains looked at the sheer fury in the Iron Queen's eyes, then at Valerie—the legendary phantom killer standing as an impenetrable shield by her side. They knew that to cross Alessia was a death sentence, but to cross her assassin was a slaughter.

"Anyone who takes a step forward dies where they stand," Valerie announced, her voice flat, calm, and utterly convincing.

Maddie realized she was entirely alone. Desperate, she lunged for the velvet pillow, pulling a hidden compact pistol from beneath it.

She never got to aim.

Alessia’s gun barked once. The heavy-caliber round struck Maddie squarely in the chest, the force throwing her backward into the Moretti throne. The silver crown rolled off the velvet pillow, bouncing down the marble steps until it clinked against Alessia's leather boots.

Alessia didn't look down. She kept her eyes on the room of terrified men. She slowly walked up the steps, stepping over Maddie's lifeless body, and turned around to face her empire.

She didn't sit on the throne. Instead, she stood directly in front of it, looking down at her captains.

"The old alliance is dead," Alessia declared, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "My forces are dismantling the rivals who tried to burn our city as we speak. From this moment on, the Moretti Syndicate answers to me, and me alone. If anyone has an objection, speak now."

Silence blanketed the room. One by one, the hardened, brutal captains of the underworld dropped to one knee, bowing their heads in absolute submission to the Iron Queen.

Alessia looked past the kneeling crowd, her sharp gaze finding Valerie standing near the shattered window.

Valerie lowered her weapon, a slow, proud smirk playing on her lips. She didn't kneel. She didn't bow. She gave a slight, respectful nod—a nod shared between equals. The lie that had brought them together was burned away, leaving behind a terrifying, beautiful reality.

The peace they had carved out of the ashes of Maddie Ferro's betrayal was fragile, and Valerie knew it.It was a crisp autumn evening, and the upper terrace of the Moretti Estate overlooked a city that now quieted at Alessia’s command. Valerie leaned against the stone balustrade, a cigarette burning unlit between her fingers. She was wearing a tailored suit tonight—a concession to Alessia’s world—but the weight of a ceramic blade was still tucked discreetly against her ribs.Behind her, the heavy glass doors slid open. Alessia stepped onto the terrace, the tension that usually held her shoulders rigid melting away the moment she saw Valerie. She had traded her stark boardroom blazers for a soft, silk cream blouse that caught the moonlight."The Northern captains have officially signed the new distribution terms," Alessia said, walking over to lean against the rail beside Valerie. Her hand automatically slid across the cold stone, her fingers brushing against Valerie's. "No arguments.

The blood had long been scrubbed from the marble floors of the Moretti Estate, but the scent of ozone and copper still lingered in Alessia’s mind.It was three in the morning, and the grand office was entirely dark save for the amber glow of the city skyline cutting through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Alessia sat at her mahogany desk, her fingers tightly rubbing her temples. Spread across the desk were financial ledgers, logistics reports, and the asset sheets of the Ferro family, which she had systematically absorbed over the last forty-eight hours.Maddie Ferro was dead, but the vacuum her betrayal left behind was chaotic.A soft click echoed in the silence of the room. Alessia didn't look up, nor did her hand reach for the pistol resting on her blotter. She knew that specific, entirely soundless stride.Valerie stepped out from the shadows near the balcony door, shedding her heavy leather jacket and tossing it onto a leather armchair. She wore a simple black tank top, her arms be

The crimson glow of the terminal pulsed against the walls, counting down the seconds they had left before the perimeter was breached."They found the car," Valerie said, her voice dropping into her default, icy tactical cadence. She stood up, leaving the vulnerability of the floor behind, and moved toward the hidden armory wall. She slapped her palm against a biometric scanner, and a hidden panel slid open, revealing racks of black-market rifles, tactical gear, and neatly stacked magazines. "The tracker must have had a hidden secondary relay. We have maybe three minutes."Alessia braced her good arm against the table, forcing herself to stand. The fresh stitches in her shoulder throbbed with a white-hot intensity, but her eyes were entirely clear. The vulnerable woman from the safehouse floor was gone. The Iron Queen was back."They won't just bring a standard hit squad," Alessia said, walking over to the armory rack with a steady, commanding stride. She looked at the weapons, her eye

The safehouse smelled of dust, gun oil, and rain.Valerie slammed the heavy iron door shut, throwing three deadbolts and dropping a reinforced security bar into place. Her hands, usually steady enough to perform surgery, shook visibly. She turned around, leaning her back against the door, her chest heaving as she stared at the woman standing in the center of the dimly lit room.Alessia Moretti looked like a fallen god. Her sleek Kevlar armor was smeared with soot and grime, her dark hair tangled, and a deep laceration on her left shoulder was leaking dark, crimson blood onto the floorboards. But it was her eyes that pinned Valerie to the wall. They weren't the eyes of Alia from the lounge. They were the eyes of a monarch who had just watched her world burn—and found out her lover held the match."Touch me," Alessia whispered, her voice dangerously quiet as Valerie stepped forward with a medical kit, "and I will use whatever strength I have left to tear your throat out."Valerie stoppe

The sky on Tuesday morning was the color of a bruised lung.Valerie sat motionless on the rusted steel beam of an abandoned shipping warehouse, a hundred feet above the cracked pavement of the industrial canal district. Her heavy-caliber sniper rifle was anchored on a sandbag, its barrel aiming down like an iron finger pointing at the crossroads below. Through the high-powered optics of her scope, the world was cast in a cold, electronic green. She breathed in for four seconds, held it for four, and exhaled. Her pulse was a flat, icy sixty beats per minute. The woman from the lounge—Alia—was tucked away in a locked compartment of her mind. Right now, Valerie was only a firing mechanism. A weapon waiting for its cue.Her earpiece crackled with static. "Phantom One, the package has entered the kill zone," her handler’s synthesized voice reported. "Three-car convoy. Black armored SUVs. Target is in the middle vehicle. Eliminate the asset and vanish.""Copy," Valerie whispered, her finger
