Chapter Sixty-Five

Tristan’s POV

I walk into the kitchen and immediately stop.

Andrea is standing with her back against the counter, a pen between her fingers and a small notepad in the other hand. She writes something down, pauses, looks around the kitchen as though the walls might suddenly provide an answer, then brings the pen to her lips while she thinks. I watch her for a moment, and the strangest thought crosses my mind.

How exactly did this become my life?

  • THE PRICE OF BEING HIS    Terrible Timing

Chapter Sixty-EightAndrea’s POVDinner should not be this complicated. That is my first thought as I watch Tristan stand over the kitchen counter, staring at the recipe on his phone like it has personally offended him.“No.”I blink. “What do you mean, no?”“I mean that isn't how you make it.”I look down at the handwritten recipe in my notebook, then back at him. We're making baked chicken and potatoes. Something simple. Something I have watched my mother make enough times to know by heart.“It's literally how my mother taught me.”“Your mother was wrong.”My mouth falls open. “Excuse me?”Tristan doesn't even look sorry. He simply reaches for his phone again and scrolls through whatever ridiculous recipe he has found online. “There's a better way.”“There is no better way. There's my way.”“That isn't how cooking works.”I fold my arms. “And apparently being rich has made you an expert?”“Not being rich. Experience.”“Experience where? A five-star restaurant?”“Yes.”I stare at him

  • THE PRICE OF BEING HIS    A normal life

Chapter Sixty-SevenAndrea’s POV“Tristan, let me carry some of those.”He doesn't even look at me. “I'm fine.”I glance at the grocery bags hanging from both his hands. “You're sweating.”“I'm not sweating.”I stare at his forehead. There is an obvious bead of sweat slowly making its way down his temple. He wipes it away like that somehow proves his point. “The weather is just hot.”I look around at the quiet road, then back at him. “We're in the middle of autumn, Tree. It's not even that hot.”“It's warm.”“Whatever you need to tell yourself.”He gives me a look and keeps walking.I speed up until I'm walking backward in front of him, forcing him to slow down before he walks straight into me.“You could really use some help.”“I don't need help.”“Why are you so stubborn?”“I'm not stubborn.”I almost laugh. “You're carrying half the grocery store by yourself just to prove you don't need help. That's the definition of stubborn.”He sighs. “Andrea.”“Tristan, stop acting tough.”He s

  • THE PRICE OF BEING HIS    Just like everyone else

Chapter Sixty-SixAndrea’s POV“Why does it seem like everyone is staring at me?”I glance at Tristan, then at the people scattered around the grocery store before looking back at him.“That’s because they are.”I reach into the vegetable section and pick up a bell pepper, inspecting it briefly before adding it to the cart he is pushing. Then I look down at my list and tick another item off.Tristan follows my gaze around the aisle.“But why?”I bite back a laugh. “Well, for starters, it's hard to overlook when you're the only person here who looks completely out of place.”He looks down at himself.I do the same. There is nothing subtle about Tristan Hale.Even now, when he has supposedly agreed to experience an ordinary day, he somehow looks like he is about to walk into a board meeting and fire half the room. His shirt is casual by his standards, but it is still clearly expensive. His trousers probably cost more than everything in my old wardrobe put together, and even his shoes lo

I watch her for a moment, and the strangest thought crosses my mind. How exactly did this become my life?A week ago, I would have considered waking up this late an unacceptable waste of time. Today, I barely remember what time I opened my eyes because Andrea and I spent half the night talking about everything and absolutely nothing. We talked about childhood memories, stupid habits, things we hated, things we secretly liked, and somehow, somewhere between one conversation and the next, midnight became one in the morning.Neither of us cared. Now I'm standing in my kitchen watching her fit perfectly in this place as though this i

Chapter Sixty-FourAndrea’s POVMy eyes flutter open, and for a second, I have absolutely no idea where I am.The ceiling above me looks unfamiliar, the sound of waves fills the room, and there is something warm beneath my cheek that definitely isn't a pillow. Then I look up.Tristan.He's sitting there, looking down at me with an annoyingly amused expression.“Oh, shoot.” I say, slowly push myself upright and rubbing the sleep from my eyes. “How long was I out for?”“Not too long.”I glance toward the television. The screen is already showing the names of the cast and crew as the movie credits roll.My mouth drops open. “Oh my God.”I sit up straighter, staring at the television in disbelief. “I missed the entire ending?”Tristan shrugs. “You missed the rest of your movie.”“That’s a bummer.” I rub my face again. “I didn't even know when I dozed off.”“I noticed.”I look at him suspiciously. “You should've woken me up.”He gives me a small smile. “And miss watching your cute sleeping

Chapter Sixty-ThreeTristan’s POV“Ouch, Tristan. Take it easy. It hurts.”I glance down at Andrea's foot and then back at her face. “You're such a crybaby.”“No, it's you.” She immediately frowns at me. “You're too hard with your massage.”My fingers pause around the swollen area of her ankle.“Well, that's what you get for running around barefoot.” I give her a pointed look before carefully rubbing around the red area again. “Next time, think twice before doing something childish like that.”She stares at me for a moment before pulling her leg away. “You know what? Never mind.”I raise an eyebrow.“You suck at giving massages anyway. I'm going to get an ice pack.”I reach for her leg again. “Let me get it for you.”She gives me an unimpressed look. “You're probably going to mess that up too, knowing you.”I put a hand over my chest. “Ouch.”She rolls her eyes and starts getting up from the couch.“But I'm not going to let that get to me,” I continue. “You need to stay in bed until i
