CHAPTER TWENTY SIX

Elara’s POV

I didn’t feel my legs for a moment.

Valerie’s words sank into me like ice water.

“The maid is dead.”

Dead.

My ears rang. My heart stopped. My breath froze halfway in my chest.

“They claimed she committed suicide with a drug” Valerie whispered, her voice trembling as if the words themselves were poisonous.

“Who visited her last?”

My throat was too tight to answer.

She leaned closer.

“Princess Anna. She even demanded a moment alone with her. But no one would dare question or accuse the princess.”

The world tilted.

My fingers curled slowly, nails digging into my palms.

The maid. The only girl who knew the truth. The only one who could expose Anna.

Gone. The girl who knew the antidote…gone

Wtf!!

What should I do

I swallowed hard and turned around.

And there she was.

Anna stood near the corridor like she had been waiting for me, her gown too bright for someone with blood on her hands. Her chin lifted in that spoiled way that always grated my nerves.

CHAPTER THIRTY FOURELARA’S POV“I am. I'm fine” I said trying to catch my breath Every head turned in my direction, curiosity sharp and unhidden demanding answers I was not ready to give. My fingers curled into the fabric of my gown as if it could anchor me.“What happened?” she asked, her voice low with concern.“When we are in,” I murmured quickly. “I will tell you.”I did not wait for her response before turning toward the inn, my steps hurried, my mind already racing ahead. All I wanted was distance. Distance from the questions. Distance from the memory of the chariot. Distance from him.Alaric.I followed her closely, careful not to glance around, careful not to collide with him, careful not to let fate place us in the same breath tonight. I told myself I needed space. That I needed time.We had barely stepped inside when Mason’s voice cut through my thoughts.“My queen. Your room is with the king. Valerie will take you there.”The words landed like a blow to my chest.I heard

CHAPTER THIRTY-THREEALARIC’S POV“And you said you weren’t interested,” she said, mocking, her lips twitching like she enjoyed the taste of my discomfort.I scoffed and looked away, folding my arms. “Tell me.”She leaned back slightly. “Not like you care.”“I do,” I snapped, then paused. My jaw tightened. “I don’t. I just want to know if I’m not sharing space with an enemy.”Her laughter burst out suddenly, loud and unrestrained. It startled me.“Of course you are.”I squeezed my face, dragging my hand down slowly. Saints above, this woman would be the end of me.“Is it?” I asked, voice low, suspicious. She laughed even harder, clutching her stomach now. “I would’ve sworn you swallowed a frog.”I glared at her. “Stop laughing.”“I can’t,” she wheezed, wiping at the corner of her eye. “You look so serious.”My patience was thinning, stretched to its limit.“It’s lovers,” she finally said, calming down. “We are lovers.”The words landed like a stone dropped into still water.Lovers.I

  • THE RAVEN KING’S BRIDE    CHAPTER THIRTY TWO: F-L-A-M-ES

CHAPTER THIRTY TWOALARIC’S POVI caught her staring at me.The moment our eyes almost met, I looked away like a coward. It was not that I did not want to talk to her. Gods know I did. The words sat heavy on my tongue. Are you alright? Does it still hurt? Did you sleep? Are you afraid? Are you still… you?But I swallowed every question.Because wanting her was dangerous. Because caring this much already felt like a weakness. Because if whatever my heart was doing turned out to be a lie, I knew it would ruin me in ways I would never recover from.I wanted us to be real. Painfully real. And if she was only playing me, I would lose my mind. The chariot rolled forward, the sound of wheels grinding against the earth filling the silence between us. She shifted beside me. I could feel it without looking. Feel her presence the way you feel heat from a flame you are trying not to touch.“Uhm… uhmm.”She cleared her throat.I almost smiled.Almost.I knew that sound. It was the sound she made w

CHAPTER THIRTY ONEELARA’S POVSILENT STARES I stared at the chariot, about to hop on it. Valerie was already close to going to hold ny hands when I heard him“Let me help you,” he said softly. Before I could form the words, before I could argue or even process the gesture, he lifted me. Just like that. As if I weighed nothing. The world tilted briefly. The ground fell away. And suddenly, I was closer to his chest than I had ever been. The scent of him hit me first. Steel and leather and something warm underneath. Something human. His grip was firm but careful, like he was afraid I might shatter if he held me too tightly. The muscles in his arms flexed with every step as he carried me toward the waiting chariots.Every eye followed us.The people who had come with us were already gathered, murmuring among themselves. Soldiers. Attendants. Our journey to the Nations had been a waste of time.It was pointless in the way wars often are. No treaties signed. No alliances sealed. No victo

ELARA’S POV“My queen,” she said, her voice barely steady as she stepped into my chambers.“What happened?” I asked. “Are you hurt?”She tried to smile, tried to straighten her shoulders the way she always did when she wanted to look strong for me. It failed.“How are you?” she asked instead. “How are your wounds?”“I’m fine,” I said, moving closer to her. “But you were hurt. I saw the blood earlier. Valerie, look at me.”“I’m fineee,” she insisted, waving it off too quickly. “It is my duty to protect you, my queen. I can lay down my life for you if I must.”“You don’t have to,” I said softly. “I never asked for that.”She opened her mouth again, then closed it, as if weighing her words. Her eyes darted to the door.“Something happened,” she finally said.My heart thudded. “What is it?”“His Majesty wants us to start packing. We are leaving.”I exhaled slowly. “Yes. I know.”“Speak freely Valerie, you're like a friend to me” Her brows pulled together in confusion. “Not that kind of l

CHAPTER TWENTY NINEELARA’S POVI waited for the pain. For the crushing blow. For the final breath to be ripped from my lungs. It never came.Instead, steel sang through the air. A sharp, violent sound that split the night apart. I sucked in a breath and forced my eyes open, my vision blurring as firelight and shadows collided before me. Alaric stood there, moving like fury given flesh. His sword cut through the attackers with ruthless precision, every strike sure, every movement deadly. There was no hesitation in him. No mercy. One man fell. Then another. The last staggered back, fear flashing across his face before Alaric drove the blade into his stomach. The sound that left the man was wet and final. Then silence.Guards poured into the courtyard as if summoned by blood itself, boots thundering against stone, voices shouting orders far too late to matter.Where were they when I was screaming. My knees gave out.Alaric turned at once, his expression changing the moment his eyes foun
