CHAPTER SEVEN

***MEI'S POV***

The silver fork in my hand suddenly feels heavy enough to snap.

I stare at Borin across the empty restaurant, my heart executing a slow, violent thud against my ribs.

The heavy, smug satisfaction radiating off his perfectly tailored frame is practically suffocating.

Jerk.

I refuse the urge to roll my eyes as I force my rigid posture to relax by a fraction of a millimeter, refusing to give him the satisfaction of seeing me sweat.

"I beg your pardon?" I say, my voice dangerously smooth, slicing through the quiet space of Chavron.

"You heard me, Miss Chatteris," Borin says, leaning back into his leather seat with that insufferable, effortless grace. "An Alpha of your standing living in a separate downtown hotel while her supposed betrothed resides in the Shadowcrest estate screams 'sham contract' to the media. And worse, it tells the Iron Claws exactly where to find a soft target."

"I am nobody's soft target, Mr. Holloway," I snap, my eyes narrowing. "Living under the same roof was never a condition. My core team requires constant proximity to the data grids. I am not running a global tech empire from a secluded pack fortress."

"Who said anything about a fortress?" He tilts his head, his gray eyes pinning me to the back of my chair. "I have a private penthouse in the upper district of Vos. Highly secured. Human-accessible for your assistant, Curtis. And, more importantly, reinforced against supernatural breaches. If the Iron Claws decide to test your boundaries again, I want you behind a line my sentries actually control."

Oh.

I stare long and hard at him, and for the first time, I notice his blonde hair stopping just right above his brows and the way he clenches his jaw as he antipates my response.

His eyes searching and analysing, running thousands of simulations on how I'd react and possibly how he'd respond.

He might be an alpha, but he's a Veil first— his kind always desperate for information.

I take in a deep breath as I pinch the skin my brows, my lower lip catching between my teeth.

I hate feeling conered, but it's either this or battle the Ironclaw myself. As much as I'd prefer to, I really can't. I can't risk the lives of the innocent humans that work for me.

I can't let anyone take this empire from me.

I do a quick sweep of the empty room, as I lean into my chair.

Why isn't the waiter here yet?

I look back at Borin, he seems to have taken out his note again, his hand moving in a particular rhythm as he scribbles something down.

I fight the urge to roll my eyes as I reach for my phone, my fingers flying across the screen as I type a rapid amendment directly into the digital contract file.

With a cold, deliberate snap of my wrist, I slide the phone across the polished wood table toward him.

Just because I'm agreeing to his terms doesn't mean I have to be nice about it.

"Fine," I say, my voice dropping an octave, deadpan and steady. "I will occupy the penthouse. But under three non-negotiable terms."

Borin raises an eyebrow, a flicker of genuine curiosity crossing his face as he glances down at the screen.

"Enlighten me."

"First, we occupy separate wings. Second, Curtis answers to me—not your guards....third, every public appearance is scheduled beforehand." I blurt as I watch him stare at the screen. He squints his eyes as he brings the phone dangerously close to his face.

Can he not see?

Strange.

Weren't Veils rumored to lose their eyesight earlier than most werewolves?

I clear my throat and refrain from asking.

Borin reads the text line by line. For a second, the rhythmic tapping of his fingers stops.

The silence stretches, heavy and thick, until a low, rich chuckle vibrates deep in his chest.

He looks up, the gray in his eyes darkening with a dangerous, predatory fascination and I hate when he does that.

I glare back, mirroring his actions.

If he cannot take the hint, and stop the uncomfortable staring, I might as well shove it in his face.

"We have a deal, Miss Chatteris. Welcome to the penthouse."

He says, leaning into his chair even further.

Good.

A slight grin creeps up my lips.

I may have had to negotiate some of my initial terms, but I'm going to walk out of here, with substantial level of control.

"Well then—" I open my mouth to speak when we hear a scream coming from behind me .

Plates crash against the marble floor.

Every muscle in Borin's body goes rigid.

My wolf surges to the surface.

What's going on?

CHAPTER TEN***MEI'S POV*** The sound of moans fill the air as soon as I push past the door of the brothel. I crinkle my nose a bit as the scent of sex and arousal fill my nostrils. Curtis looks very pleased beside me as his hazel eyes scamper around in search of what he likes to call a 'worthy fuck'.He doesn't even make an attempt to conceal his excitement as it's very evident in his scent. He once told me letting off scents and pheromones, attracted a vast variety of fucks. I didn't know that because I met my mate earlier than most werewolves and now, I'm practically immune to pheromones of whoever isn't my mate. If anything, I find it annoying—the scent of others— yet I wish it was the exact opposite. Being immune is a stupid punishment that comes with this stupid bond. "I'll be right back. You need to eat something." Curtis says, as he gives me the 'I told you to eat a while back but you don't listen' look as my stomach roils again. I hadn't even realised it was now obvi

CHAPTER NINE *** NOLAKAI'S POV *** TEN YEARS AGO Ozone. Lavender. Mine. The scent filled my nostrils almost immediately, my gaze scanning the entire park to find where the delicious scent was coming from. Ozone. Closer. Lavender. Closer. The scent driving me mad with each passing second, my legs moving purely out of instinct, pushing past whoever stood in my way till finally, I saw her, standing a few feet apart. Time slowed, and the world faded till it was just both of us. She seemed to have been searching for me too as she came to a halt when our eyes met. I stared at her frozen in place, unsure of what to do. I'd always wondered how it would feel to meet my mate, but nothing really compared. She was fucking beautiful. Her silver hair catching in the light, the white sundress she was wearing, a complementary contrast to her hair. The white sundress, further accentuating her tanned skin. Mmm. Just how I like it. My wolf purred, a deep rumble erupting from within my c

CHAPTER EIGHT *** MEI'S POV *** "Oh shit. I'm so sorry." A feminine voice says as Borin and I turn to see the cause of the ruckus. The lady, frozen at the both of us like she's seen ghosts. "Oh my God, Miss. Chatteris, it's really you....in flesh and blood." The lady says as her eyes dart between Borin and I. I fight the urge to roll my eyes as I stare right back at her, my eyes portraying no emotion. Borin looks at her too—observing as she fiddles with her shirt, still frozen in place.I've been recognised, and it'll only take a few minutes before paparazzi flood this place if she decides to be a blabbermouth. One quiet evening. I just needed one quiet evening."Oh my God Talia. Just one task, one task I asked you to take care of." A man says, immediately he comes into the room. He glares at her before approaching our table. "I am so sorry for the inconvenience. I had to use the bathroom and I thought she'd be able to handle it." He says, apologies written all over his face.

CHAPTER SIX ***BORIN'S POV*** I let out a breathy sighs as I enter my bedroom. The room is quiet and cold. Just how I like it. I must've left the air conditioning switched on before leaving for my office a few rooms away. I decided to work from home today. Emily and I, spending Hours reviewing costs, liabilities and expenses. I sigh as I plop down on my bed, spreading my arms and legs as wide as they can go. Finally. It's been a long day and I'd like to have some alone time but that's impossible because Chatteris thought it would be fun to chat about business over dinner. I pinch the skin between my brows and force myself to sit up on the bed. As much as I don't appreciate my evenings being interrupted, I can make an exception for Chatteris. I have to. BONUS CHAPTER ***BORIN'S POV**** The notification on my private phone chimes at exactly 11 : 42 PM. It must be important for it to be on my private phone. I exhale deeply as I narrow my eyes to go over the documents detailing the expenses of transport for one of my hubs at Perth. It's a lot. And we're running out of time.I bring my head even closer to the laptop on my desk to read the sub headings of this document. Why are the letters so small? My doctor has advised to take my meds more often or at least wear glasses and I've refused every single time. Werewolves are supposed to have exceptional eyesight and it is a taboo for especially an alpha to wear glasses. Although, it's hard to maintain such eyesight as a Veil. Shadowcrests have a long history of being more susceptible to blindness. Masking comes at a price.I don't look at the message immediately, instead, I reach for the glass of whiskey beside me. I swirl the amber liquid, watching the ice cube melt against
