Amelia’s pov

I clung to the high branches, my heart thumping loudly. Every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig from below sends a jolt of fear through me.

"Okay, Amelia, you need to get a grip," I muttered, the sound coming out as a soft hoot. "You're an owl. One of the strongest birds."

Systems notification: Host's self pep talk has been noted. Now please proceed toward the quest objective below.

"I'm not proceeding to anywhere below until I stop seeing those skunks' beady little eyes" I hooted back mentally.

The wind whistled past my feathers as I flew aimlessly above the forest huge trees, hooting every few seconds in frustration.

"System," I muttered between fast breaths, "you're telling me I'm supposed to save a villain, but you didn't give me any GPS directions or a villain radar. How am I supposed to find him then? sniff his royal angst out of thin air? Hmph!"

`Navigation unavailable. Fate alignment will guide the host.`

"Oh sure," I hooted sarcastically. "I'll take it that your fate alignment translates to you having no clue either."

My wings wobbled. My energy was fading fast. I'd been flying for hours— well, probably twenty minutes, but that's a lifetime when you've just learned how not to faceplant into trees.

"Are you kidding me?" I complained as a thick, milky white fog begin to creep between the trees. As I glided lower, the fog thickened. It clung to the trees like pale ghosts, and the air grew colder. Even the crickets had stopped singing. A bad sign from where I come from.

"Okay," I whispered nervously. "Either I'm entering the villain zone… or the forest just decided to cosplay as a horror movie set."

"Analyzing atmospheric conditions… fog detected.

Origin: unknown.

Effect: significantly reduces visibility and dampens senses. Proceed with extreme caution." The system beeped.

Just then, a distant sound broke from afar. Metal clashing. A grunt. Then a deep voice, sharp and desperate, muttered.

"Stay back!"

I froze mid-flight, wings stuttering. That voice… low, commanding, and laced with pain felt cartoonishly familiar.

"Wait… no way. Is that… Kaelen?"

I flapped toward the sound, weaving through the fog. Branches whipped past me, and then the clearing opened up. My beady owl eyes widened.

There he was— Prince Kaelen himself. Or, more accurately, a blood-covered, half-conscious version of him. Silver hair is plastered to his forehead with sweat and blood from a gash on his brow. He held a sword, back pressed against a mossy stone but his stance was off, favoring his right leg.

And he looks like he's about to be a dead one because opposite him, a monstrous serpent standing more than eight feet tall reared its head, his scales glinting green and gold through the mist. Its eyes burned like dull coals.

"Oh no. Nope. Big nope. That's a serpent boss if I ever saw one."

Kaelen stumbled, barely dodging as the serpent lunged. The fog made every movement sluggish, and I realized he could hardly see.

He swung his sword again, managing to scratch the creature's jaw. It roared, a horrible screech that rattled the trees.

"System!" I cried. "That's the villain! He's going to die! I'm not dying yet, at least not in here. Do something!"

`Quest objective detected: Protect Kaelen.`

"Yeah, no kidding! Any bright ideas?"

`Combat support mode activated. Choose: Peck of Fury or… Hoot Bomb.`

I blinked. "You've got to be kidding me. Those sound like rejected Pokémon moves."

The serpent whipped its tail, slamming Kaelen against the ground making his sword fly out of reach.

"Okay, fine! Hoot Bomb!" I spat

A pulse of energy shot through me. My chest burned, feathers ruffling as if I had just swallowed a firecracker. I dove down before I could think twice.

"HEY, YOU OVERGROWN EARTHWORM!" I screeched.

The serpent turned its massive head upward, hissing. Then I hooted, as loud and shrill as I could, echoing like hoot thunder. The air rippled. The serpent flinched, disoriented, its hiss breaking into a shriek.

Kaelen blinked up at me, dazed. "What in the gods' name—?"

"Don't ask!" I yelled, though all he could most possibly hear too was "HOOOOT!"

I swooped low and raked at the serpent's eyes with my talons. Sparks flew as I struck its scaly lids.

"Okay, okay—bad idea!" I yelped as the serpent thrashed, nearly sending me spiraling into a tree.

Kaelen, shaking off his dizziness, saw his chance. He scrambled for his sword and drove it into the serpent's throat. A wet roar split the air.

But it wasn't dead yet. Its tail whipped around, slamming into Kaelen's side. He hit a tree and slid down, motionless.

"No!" I screeched, panic rising.

`Adrenaline boost unlocked. Temporary power-up: Avian Rage.`

"Avian what—"

Too late. My body moved on instinct. I dove again, wings cutting through the fog like silver blades. My claws glowed faintly, and I struck the serpent's eye dead-center.

It screamed, convulsed, and finally went still, crashing into the ground with a heavy thud.

Then silence.

I hovered weakly, chest heaving. "Did… did I just kill a fantasy boss monster with bird feet?"

`Confirmed: Host defeats target 'Venomscale Serpent and saves villain.' Experience gained: 120 points.`

"Nice," I whispered, before everything tilted sideways. The world blurred into green and gray.

"System," I croaked, "if I faint now, please tell me he doesn't eat owl stew."

Then darkness swallowed me whole.

Amelia's POV The carriage rolled out of the portal, coming to a stop, and I could hear the murmuring of voices outside. Kealen straightened, adjusting his collar with a sign. "We're here," he said, “Mia, make sure they don’t get lost throughout our stay here.” “Yes your highness!” She whispered softly. “It’s a bit disheartening that you would think I would get lost though.” I attempted a pout, knowing I probably look like a confused owl with a wonky beak. Mia was already peeking through the curtains, her eyes wide with curiosity. "Your Highness, there are... there are so many of them. And they're all so..." "Good looking?" Kealen supplied, his voice flat. "Yes, I know. The vampire clans have a reputation." "Good looking isn't the word I was going for," Mia whispered. "I was going to say terrifying. They're all so pale and still, like statues that might suddenly come to life." Kealen ignored us and opened the carriage door. The moment he stepped out, a wave of whispers rippled t

  • THE REJECTED PRINCE’S OWL   Bloody comfort

Amelia's POVThe carriage fell into a heavy silence, broken only by Mia's ragged breathing and the distant sound of the guards finishing off the remaining bandits outside. The man on the floor lay still, his blood seeping into the wooden planks beneath him, creating a dark stain that seemed to grow larger by the second.Mia hadn't moved. She stood frozen, the sword still clutched in her trembling hands, her grey eyes fixed on the body at her feet. Her face had gone pale— paler than I thought possible and her lips were parted in a silent scream that never quite escaped."I killed him," she whispered again, her voice cracking. "I actually killed him."I shook off the lingering dizziness from being thrown against the wall and hopped closer to her, my heart aching at the sight of her distress. She looked so young in that moment—just a child who had been forced to do something no child should ever have to do.The carriage door swung open, and Kealen appeared, his sword still drawn. His eye

Amelia's PovMia was still talking, her words tumbling over each other in her excitement."I've read so many books about dragons. There's one in the palace library that's supposed to be a complete account of dragon history, but it's written in some ancient language that no one can translate. I've been trying to learn it for years, but it's really hard. Do you think Ruby's history is in that book? Do you think she knows her history? Do dragons have culture? Do they have families? Do they—""Mia," Kealen interrupted gently. "You need to breathe."

  • THE REJECTED PRINCE’S OWL   You’re really getting banished.

Amelia's POVThe carriage swayed gently as it rolled along the uneven road, the rhythmic clatter of hooves and wheels creating a hypnotic melody. I watched from my cage by Kealen's side as the palace grew smaller and smaller in the distance, until it was nothing more than a speck from afar.It felt strange, leaving behind the only place I had known since arriving in this world. Strange and a little terrifying. The trees moved in the opposite direction, a blur of green and brown as we passed through the forest. Birds chirped overhead, and somewhere in the distance, I could hear the sound of running water.Ruby was asleep by my side, her tiny body warm against my feathers. She had barely stirred since we left, mostly eating and sleeping was her routine plus being exhausted from everything that had happened. I couldn't blame her. I was exhausted too."You know," I said through our telepathic link, "for someone who's supposed to be banished, you seem awfully relaxed."Kealen was leaning

[Pov: Amelia]"She's old enough to know what she's doing.""She's still a child!"Mia, oblivious to my internal protests, was studying me with a look of pure wonder."Your feathers," she murmured. "They look so soft. Can I touch you?"I looked at Kealen again."I think I’ll like her," I said. "She keeps asking permission. How is a thirteen-year-old more respectful than most adults?""Because she was raised right," Kealen replied. "And yes, you may touch her. Gently."I huffed."Fine. But if she pulls a feather, I'm pecking her."Mia reached into the cage slowly, her fingers hovering just above my feathers."Is it okay if I...?"I tilted my head, meeting her grey eyes. The girl is asking permission again. I might have to keep her."Go ahead," I hooted softly.Mia's fingers touched my feathers. Her touch was impossibly gentle, like she was handling something precious and fragile. She stroked my plumage with the lightest pressure, her face alight with joy."Oh," she breathed. "You're so

[Pov: Amelia]I watched from my cage as servants came and went, their arms laden with boxes and bundles. The room that had once been so grand and imposing was slowly being stripped bare.Ruby slept through most of it, her tiny body curled against my side. I envied her ability to find peace in the middle of all this madness. Every time a servant passed too close to the cage, I tensed, my feathers ruffling with anxiety."Easy," I told myself. "They're just doing their jobs. They're not going to hurt you." I can’t also always trust the system to save meBut the cage felt smaller with each passing hour.Eventually, the last crate was carried out and the servants filed out, leaving behind an almost empty room and a loud silence.I was alone.Well, alone except for Ruby, who was still snoring softly against my side.I stared at the room, my mind racing with questions I couldn't answer. Where were we going? What would the vampire clans be like? I can’t remember any vampire stuff happening in
