JESSIE

Warm air from the sun blasted on my face as soon as I stepped out of the restaurant. I was smiling to myself because I had played cupid and put Tina with the man she had been stalking.

'Don't screw this up,' I said to her, grinning from ear to ear as I slipped the phone into my pocket.

I looked around and began to walk in the direction of the bus stop, only just realising that Tina was my ride here.

I didn't need to turn around to feel a car following after me slowly; I stopped, and t

STEPHENAmelia was in our bed as usual.Jumping off the edge.I groaned, and Jessie nudged my side.“She is your daughter; take care of her.”My eyes shot open, and I looked at her. Her eyes were closed, and she still looked peaceful, as if our daughter were not actively trying to murder herself.I kissed the side of her head, and her lips stretched into a small smile.I sat up in bed, and Amelia moved until she was in my arms. She was still jumping up and down excitedly. How did she have such energy so early in the morning?“Daddy, Daddy,” she said excitedly, pushing the stuffed penguin in my face. “Mr Toose says hi.”“Hi,” I waved at the stuffed animal and tried to push it away, but she held it firm. Why did she have such a nice grip?“What are you doing awake?” I asked, and she tilted her head with a pout.“Nanny Rose woke me,” she exclaimed, her voice louder than it should have been.I ruffled her hair and got off the bed.In a split second, she was already sitting on a heavily pr

JESSIEMy eyes fluttered open.I felt the heaviness of the crisp blanket over my body first before my mind processed where I was.We were supposed to be on our honeymoon, running down the streets and eating everything we could see.Instead, we were stuck inside, my limbs heavy from the stress of the past month. My throat was itchy after throwing up everything I had on the plane. The sickness didn't pick a good enough time to arrive. As soon as we touched down, I felt sick to my stomach. Stephen had to carry me all the way in.I was in his oversized shirt, clutching my stomach with my eyes pressed together in intense pain. The bathroom door opened, and Stephen emerged. He was dressed in comfy-looking loose grey sweatpants and a T-shirt that hugged all of his muscles.Even with the pain surging through my stomach and the waves from the Caribbean Sea crashing gently outside the floor-to-ceiling glass doors of our private villa, he was still the only thing I could think about. His hair wa

JESSIEStephen was already awake, staring at me. I pushed my chest up with a defiant look on my face.“Take a picture; it would last longer.”“No, thank you…” He kissed my lips, fingers brushing the side of my face. “I want to stare for as long as I can.”“Ughh, so cheesy,” I murmured.I have no idea how he managed to get us to sleep over at the main house, but I was sure Tina had stormed off at some point in the night.I tried to get out of bed, but Stephen held my shoulders and pushed me back in. My eyes widened, and my lips parted slightly.“What are you doing?” My voice was in a hushed whisper.“What are you suddenly shy about?” he asked, flipping a lock of hair that had fallen over my face. “You weren't shy at all last night when you were squirming under me now, were you?”I clapped my hand to his mouth, my heart beating in my chest. “Are you allowed to say things like that?” I asked. He laughed and nodded. “I am,” his voice reverberated through my palm as he slowly pulled it awa

STEPHEN “Where is she?” Evelyn was standing in the doorway, refusing to let us both go in after Jessie. “Your grandfather would like a word with her," she explained, barely meeting my eyes. This was not the image of her I knew. She was one to never back down from a challenge. I guess the reality of things was finally dawning on her. She was always the one who looked me in the face when she was clearly in the wrong. Acting all self-righteous. “And I can't go in there because…?” “He won't eat her up now, would he?” she asked, finally looking up at us. “Allow them to talk for a while, and you both can come with me." "Come with you?” Tina scoffed. She looked at the door and then turned, walking out of the house. “When dinner is ready, send someone for me." I was left standing there with my mother. “Stephen, come have a word with me." I nodded, curious what she was going to say now. She led me to the room she loved sitting in. “Can I offer you anything to drink? Tea? Coffee? So

JESSIE“Once we are in there, do not let her manipulate you." I looked at Tina through the rearview mirror. She had a worried look on her face and was biting the bottom of her lip. Her eyes shot up at me. She widened them and waited for my response. "You've said that at least a million times this night…" “And you think I have said it enough?" Her voice was sharp. I took a deep breath and looked at Stephen behind the wheel. He had insisted on driving home himself, and I was glad for it. I didn't have to be under the scrutiny of his security detail for a family dinner. I grabbed his hand that was turning white on the steering wheel, and he turned to me. “You know it's not too late to turn back now," Tina said again. We snapped our gaze away from her, and I turned fully to her, feeling the seatbelt pressing into my chest. “I already gave her my word. Are you saying I should just go back on it now?” “I am saying that you don't have to be respectful to her. She won't respect you an

JESSIEA grand Harrington wedding was no easy feat. Juggling meeting up with the planner and choosing between exotic flowers flown in from Barbados and local ones was more difficult than I had anticipated. The wedding details were checked over and over again. The entertainment section of the news was covering every topic related to the wedding all day and night. “What if I just run off?” “What?” Tina’s stare at me in the mirror was the only reason I knew I had said those words out loud. I had been thinking it since the Harrington family got involved in the process. “What did you just say?” “I am thinking of running off." The woman who was piecing the dress together for me froze. I looked at her in the mirror, and she forced a smile. I could tell what she was thinking. Her finger was shaking as she pushed the pins through the fabric. "Would you please excuse us?” Tina asked, getting out of the chair, tossing the magazines to the side of the couch, and walking up to me. The at

JESSIE“Okay, but you need to be careful; I still want my wife in one piece at the end of this.” The word 'wife' lingered in the air. I was his wife, but still, it made me feel conscious that I had taken the Harrington name somewhat overnight. “I can take care of myself,” I replied. “You don’t ha
