Aegis's P.O.V

Tears build in my eyes, and I take a shaky breath. This can’t be true. It can’t. They’re just friends. Sure, Sheila has a crush on him, but he doesn’t return her feelings. He can’t.

He’s my mate.
He’s mine, and I’m his.

Why would they go through with this, knowing they haven’t met their true mates yet? Why would Elias agree to this?

I lift my gaze from the box to Sheila’s expectant smile. My eyes trail from her face to Elias’s. He refuses to look at me. His jaw clenches so tightly he could crack his teeth as he stares off to the side.

Why?

He can’t really be going through with this. He can’t be doing this to me.

My wolf howls painfully within me, thrashing in my chest in rage and heartache as everything crumbles around us.

My parents, oblivious to the silent storm in the room, get up from their seats to see what my sister has gifted me. Once they read the words inscribed on the envelope, their faces light up. They smile at each other, joyfully hugging Sheila.

They bombard her with words I can’t register over the sound of my breaking heart. But fragments slip through—“Congratulations on being the next Luna”… “We’re so proud to have a daughter who’ll merge our name into the Alpha bloodline.”

I don’t even care for the position. The Luna title never once crossed my mind.
I just want him.
I just want my mate.

I can only focus on the one person in the room whose opinion matters.

I wish I could say he looks remorseful. I wish, for the sake of my pride, I could say he looks torn.

But I can’t.

And he doesn’t.

There’s no hint of regret or sorrow on his handsome face. He looks completely calm and content—as if he isn’t tearing me apart from the inside out.

He just… doesn’t care.

“I wanted to ask you face-to-face.” Sheila’s voice trembles with excitement as she fiddles nervously with her pink-manicured nails. “Will you be my maid of honor?”

The glow on her face makes my stomach churn. I’m going to throw up.

I try so hard to hold back the tears, but they finally break through. A wretched sob escapes my lips.

“I-I…” I stammer, unable to form words.

I have no idea what I’m going to say.
How do I tell her that the man she’s about to marry was in my room last night?
How do I tell her she’s planning to marry my mate?

An immediate frown darkens Sheila’s face at what she thinks is hesitation. Disappointment and confusion cloud her features. She probably expected me to leap at the news, showering her with hugs, kisses, and words of affection—the same way our parents are doing right now.

My wolf growls at the sight.

“Sheila, darling? Can you and your mother please get your sister some water? It seems the excitement and shock of the wedding stunned her.”

Sheila and my mother promptly shoot out of their seats and head for the kitchen.

I’m left staring at Elias and my father, who now wears a look of confusion tinged with suspicion.

“Elias, you can’t—” I begin, my voice cracking.

“Beta David, please come with me. I need to talk to you,” Elias interrupts smoothly.

Father looks between us, his brows furrowed. He nods solemnly and purses his lips, clearly confused but unwilling to ask questions. With a curt dip of his head, he turns to me one last time before following Elias.

On their way out, they meet Sheila and my mother returning from the kitchen. Elias gestures for them to follow. My father shoots me a sharp glare.

“What did you do, Aegis?”

His voice echoes in my head through the mind link.

I don’t answer. He thinks I’ve done something terrible to make Elias upset with me, but I can’t bring myself to look at him right now.

As if sensing my gaze, Elias glances in my direction and locks eyes with me. His hard, steely stare gives nothing away.

As his mate, I should feel his emotions the way he feels mine.

But he’s blocked me out.
He can feel me.
I can’t feel him.

Sheila tries to talk to him—probably asking what’s wrong. She follows his gaze back to me, her eyes narrowing. Not being able to stand how perfect they look together, I turn away and fix my eyes on the floor.

“We apologize for her in advance, Alpha,” my father says.

Alpha?

Why is Father calling him Alpha when Elias hasn’t yet been officially appointed?

His birthright hasn’t been passed down. There hasn’t even been an Alpha ceremony. Landon can’t take over the Alpha position without his Luna being marked, mated, and sworn into oath. It’s the condition set by the first Alpha of the pack.

The only reason my father would call him Alpha is if his wolf no longer recognizes Elias’s father as the current Alpha.

But Elias hasn’t found his mate—or at least not as far as my father knows.

There have been whispers in the pack about Elias’s missing mate, and whether the reason he hasn’t found her is because she’s human. His parents have worried too. His father—a hardened traditionalist—would never accept Elias as his successor without his true mate.

Seeing as Elias isn’t planning to accept me—his true mate—as his Luna, his father would never allow him to take over.

Unless…

If Elias claims Sheila as his mate, he can never be Alpha.

There’s only one way left.

To challenge his father for the position.

Alpha challenges are fights to the death.
The survivor claims the head of their opponent.

If my father calls him Alpha…

It can only mean one thing.

Elias is planning to kill his father for the position.

Aegis's P.O.V“You're supposed to be on bed rest.”The ash clung to my fingers like guilt. It slipped under my nails and smudged black against pale skin, refusing to let me forget. There has to be something we're missing from the crime scene. A witch that powerful and experienced couldn’t have been that careless.I was kneeling in the wreckage, sifting through broken timber and cold stone, when his voice rolled over me like thunder.“You’re supposed to be resting, Aegis.”My chest tightened. The damn man had a knack for showing up like a haunting headache.I didn’t turn around. Just dug deeper into the soot.Maybe I’d find something—anything—that would make the gnawing in my chest stop. We’re missing something.“Bed rest is for people who enjoy feeling like they’re in a coffin,” I muttered. “I’m not one of them.”“That’s not what the doctor said.”“The doctor doesn’t know what he’s talking about. I’m claustrophobic, not paralyzed.”“How would you know?”The words slipped out before I

(King Damien’s POV)The smell of her blood won’t go away. It’s all over me. It’s wrong. She’s mine. She shouldn’t bleed. Her body is limp in my arms as I push through the double doors of the pack hospital. Every step feels like I’m carrying my own damn heart to the chopping block.“Aegis. Stay awake.” My voice cracks. I lower it so the nurses can’t hear. “Don’t you dare close your eyes on me again.”Her lashes don’t even twitch.I tighten my hold. She feels too light and fragile for someone who’s fought me so hard all day.Emery and Zach are already waiting in the hall. The second they see me, they step forward, hands raised to receive her.“Give her to us,” Emery says calmly.“Move.”“She needs treatment—”“I said move.” My tone drops to a growl.Zach doesn’t budge. His jaw is tight, his fists clenched at his sides.“We’ll take her, Your Highness. You’re too close—”“You take one step closer, and I’ll break your arms. Another step, and I’ll tear them off and feed them to you.”Zach f

My chest burns.I claw at the rock blocking the exit until my nails split.“Get me out! Get me out of here!”My voice cracks.“Please—please—let me out!”“Aegis!”His voice cuts through the blackness.“Stop—stop hurting yourself.”"I can’t be here… Please, I can’t…”I choke on a rancid sob.I can’t. I can’t stop.My hands keep scraping the stone.Something slicks down my palms, warm.Blood.I can barely feel it.His hand closes firmly around my wrist.“You’re bleeding.”“Don’t touch me! Let me out! Please let me out!”“You’re safe,” he says, voice low, careful like I’m some wild animal.“You’re not trapped. Breathe—just breathe.”Safe.The word means nothing. There’s no air. Aegis's First Person P.O.VThey were watching me like I was Beyoncé reborn. No, seriously.I could feel the stares. The admiration. The whispers from girls in shiny dresses who looked like they practiced looking effortless. One of them even said—and I quote—“I wish I could be like her.”Cute. But also, awkward.Especially since the man beside me—the actual King—was being treated like he smelled faintly of wet socks. They smiled at me.They bowed at me.And they barely even nodded at him.I didn’t blame them. The King had this permanent scowl like someone had told him brunch was canceled forever. He leaned in close to me. “I hate it here.”I smiled brightly at a group of teen she-wolves ogling my boots. “I love it here.”“I’m serious.”“So am I.”His jaw clenched. “Let’s go.”“I want to stay.”“Aegis.”“You brought me here, remember?” I gave him my best sweet-evil smile. “Now you get to suffer.”He didn’t respond. He just stared like he was debating murder and taxes at the same time.W

Aegis's First Person P.O.VThey rolled out a damn red carpet.I blinked as we stepped out of the car and into Alpha Stephan’s territory. There was a literal red carpet. With golden lining. Everywhere.“Oh wow,” I muttered. “All this for little old me?”Emery chuckled behind me. The King didn’t.A group of men stood in front of the pack house like it was a royal event. At the center was Alpha Stephan. Tall. Sharp suit and he smiles like a sin.Oh me likey. He looked at me first. Not the King. Not Zach. Me.“Welcome to our pack, Female Alpha Aegis,” he said, stepping forward and taking my hand before I even offered it. He kissed it.Gross. But... a little flattering.“You’re more beautiful than the stories.”I smiled sweetly. “And you’re more dramatic than I expected.”He laughed. “You wound me. But I like it.”The King stepped forward. “Enough.”Alpha Stephan turned, still smiling. “Oh. Your Majesty. I didn’t realize you’d be coming with her.”“I wasn’t supposed to,” the King growled.

Just silence.I pressed redial and held the phone to my ear.It rang.Once.Twice.Three times. Then… voicemail.I lowered the phone slowly.Panic sat heavy in my stomach as I stared at the phone screen like it would suddenly change its mind and ring.“He didn’t answer?” Zach asked from the edge of the bed.I shook my head, swallowing hard. “Not..even.. once.”Emery leaned against the wall, arms crossed, his face equally worried tight. “It’s been hours. He’s never gone this long without checking in.”“I know,” I said.Something in my chest twisted. My instincts were screaming. It wasn’t normal. Noah always answered—especially my calls.Something was wrong.I stood. My voice came out sharper than I meant. “I need to go back.”Zach stepped in front of me. “What? Aegis—”“I have to,” I snapped. “He’s in danger.”“You don’t know that for sure.”I turned to Emery. “You saw the files. You saw what they do. Noah is the last piece. And
