Aegis’s P.O.V

Three hours into dinner, and I was already planning murder.

The murder of my dearly beloved sister.

But that was beside the point.

He was ignoring me.

After last night, I thought we would be closer. If I didn’t know better, I would’ve believed all of it was just a dream. But the soreness between my legs with every step reminded me otherwise.

We were having dinner with the Alpha’s family. The unusual absence of the Alpha and Luna made an already horrible day even worse.

We’d been attending this dinner since we were children. It was a customary tradition between the Alpha’s family and their Betas.

As little kids, whenever dinner lost our interest, we’d sneak outside to play.

We were a formidable trio—Elias the prankster, me the tomboy, and Sheila the princess and baby of the group.

We were close, bound together by the intricacies of living in the pack house as high-ranking children.

But now, the sound of Sheila’s laughter burned like acid in my chest.
Everything she did made me angry.

It hurt so much that I felt rage brewing inside me—for my own sister.

But could I really share the attention of the one person who was supposed to be mine?

Sheila had always been the center of our parents’ attention. I used to blame it on her being the younger child, but deep down, I knew the truth: they simply didn’t care for me. And I couldn’t hate them for it.

I wasn’t their biological daughter anyway.

They adopted me when I was found abandoned in a nearby forest. For that, I was forever grateful.

Still, their favoritism wasn’t subtle.

Sheila and I couldn’t have been more different.

She was friendly; I was socially awkward.

She was confident and beautiful; I was quiet and withdrawn.

She had friends who’d gladly die for her; I only had her.

Everyone believed she was Luna material.

Me? I was simply “the beauty’s sister.” Or as her friends loved to call me—“the Beast.”

My stomach churned as I pushed food around my plate.

We grew up as different people, and I never minded. Sheila was my sibling, and I was proud of her. She never asked for the attention people gave her. She was just… that good.

As stupid as it sounded, I—her older sisterlooked up to her. She was a role model.

She was one of a kind.
Just as I was.

She was beautiful.
Just as I was.

And my mate was supposed to see that.

But for the first time, I felt something foreign clawing at my chest—
jealousy.

Jealous of all she had that I didn’t.

Jealous of what he saw in her.

Jealous of the memories and friendship they shared.

Watching them together made me realize—

I was the outlier.

The odd one out.

For the third time that night, tears pricked my eyes.

I just wanted a place here.

A place in my mate’s heart.

The scent of cedar and mint hit me all at once—the same scent that had mixed with mine last night. Memories of his touch made me desperate to step into his arms again, to claim his skin as mine, to hold his heart in my hands.

But I couldn’t.

That was my mate.

The other half of my soul.

He was so close… yet so far away.

He must have sensed my thoughts because I felt his eyes on me.

Heat rushed to my face in embarrassment.

Sheila suddenly stood, startling me. She tapped her fork on her wine glass to gather everyone’s attention.

“Would everyone please move to the living room? We have an announcement—and one last gift for the birthday girl.”

Confused, I followed after our parents and Elias.

My birthday had been yesterday. Why a gift now?

I trailed into the common room last, my thoughts still consumed by a certain brown-haired man who was carefully avoiding my gaze.

Sheila smiled at me mischievously and disappeared into another room, reemerging with a large blue box topped with a small red bow. She handed it to me with a grin before lowering her gaze to her strappy black heels.

“This one is from Elias and me.”

Elias stood leaning against the wall instead of joining her in the center of the room. His arms crossed over his chest, muscles flexing.
Temptation gripped me by the throat. Those hands had undressed me the night before.

I sat on the nearest couch, box in hand, my heart pounding.
Was this why he’d been avoiding me?

A gift?
Awn… He was truly a weird man.

I looked up at him with a smile, nearly drowning in his forest-green eyes as I opened the box.

My fingers trembled as I lifted the lid.

And then—my heart stopped.

A beautiful rose-red dress lay folded neatly inside.

On top of it, a silver envelope with elegant lettering:

You are specially invited

to the wedding of:

Elias Jonathan
&
Sheila Davids.

Aegis's POV “My name is not Lyra.”The Fire God didn’t react right away. He stood where he was, tall and solid, on a red clay platform, fire rolling off him like it was part of his skin. The ground under him stayed red-hot, but it didn’t crack. Nothing around him dared to move unless he allowed it.“I’m sure you didn’t come here to argue names with me,” he said.“Of course not,” I bit back at the annoying immortal in front of me. “Because I didn’t come here to be renamed. And I hope you know you’re a shitty host. I didn’t exactly expect comfort, but one should be able to expect basic courtesy from the planet of the ‘Fire God.’” I finished with air quotes.I don’t know what it is, but everything in this place makes my skin crawl. Badly. The King shifted beside me. I felt it without looking. That small movement he did to reassure me that he was ready to jump in if needed. The God finally looked at me fully. Not through me. At me.“You step into my land,” he said, “uninvited, and you co

Aegis's POV Jaxon dropped it on the table like it had offended him personally. The heavy book’s sound echoed through the room. Dust lifted into the air. I held my breath.“This is it,” he said.Of course it was.I stared at the cover. Dark leather. No title. No markings. Just dust and ash.“This is from the Royal Library’s private collection,” Jaxon added. “I couldn’t find any other books that mention anything about the Fire God.”I slid my fingers closer, then stopped. My hand hovered over it.Maybe I should wait for the King to open it.I glanced sideways at him. He wasn’t smiling. Right now, his mouth was set, sharper than his eyes.“So,” I said, because silence was worse. “This book takes us where, exactly?”Jaxon looked at me for a long second before he shook his head and answered.“The Fire God’s territory.”My throat tightened.“Is it another planet?” I asked, pursing my lips.“No one knows.”I nodded. “Figures.”The King finally turned to me, a thoughtful look on his face. “Y

Aegis's POV I pulled my hand back and stared at it like it had insulted me.It lay in front of me on the granite countertop of the pack’s kitchen, quiet and innocent-looking. A dark metal chain with a small red stone in the center. No glow. No hum. Just there. Like it hadn’t nearly cooked my skin seconds ago.“Right,” I muttered. “Magic.” The quietness of Alpha Stephan’s pack echoed around me. Who in their right mind built their training grounds so far away from the pack house? Oh, that’s right. The wonderful, adulterous Alpha Stephan.I wrapped a cloth around my hand and picked it up again. This time, it stayed calm. No heat or reaction. That’s weird. Why can’t I touch it directly?I turned it over slowly, checking every link. How did such a small thing protect an Alpha from getting killed? Maybe it’s just lucky. But then again, I didn’t believe in lucky objects.I believed in patterns. And this necklace didn’t feel normal.I pulled out my phone and snapped a picture to Kara. Taking

Aegis's POVThe hall went quiet the moment I stepped inside.Every sound felt too loud anyway. The pack members’ boots on the stone floor of the trial hall. The scrape of chairs. The low breath in my chest that refused to slow down. The members parted to allow me to pass with sympathetic looks on their faces. I kept my shoulders straight as I walked to the front. The guards stood in the center of the hall with their hands bound. Their heads were lowered, but I could still see their faces. They were the same ones that led us to the cave.I stopped walking. The King stood beside Alpha Stephan. He was not sitting. His jaw was tight. His hands were locked behind his back like he was holding himself in place. He wanted them dead. That much was clear. The hall filled with the pack. No one talked. They watched the guards the way people watched a wound being cleaned. Curious. Uneasy and ready for it to be over. The King’s voice broke the silence.“Begin.”One of the elders stepped forward. He

Aegis's P.O.V“You're supposed to be on bed rest.”The ash clung to my fingers like guilt. It slipped under my nails and smudged black against pale skin, refusing to let me forget. There has to be something we're missing from the crime scene. A witch that powerful and experienced couldn’t have been that careless.I was kneeling in the wreckage, sifting through broken timber and cold stone, when his voice rolled over me like thunder.“You’re supposed to be resting, Aegis.”My chest tightened. The damn man had a knack for showing up like a haunting headache.I didn’t turn around. Just dug deeper into the soot.Maybe I’d find something—anything—that would make the gnawing in my chest stop. We’re missing something.“Bed rest is for people who enjoy feeling like they’re in a coffin,” I muttered. “I’m not one of them.”“That’s not what the doctor said.”“The doctor doesn’t know what he’s talking about. I’m claustrophobic, not paralyzed.”“How would you know?”The words slipped out before I

(King Damien’s POV)The smell of her blood won’t go away. It’s all over me. It’s wrong. She’s mine. She shouldn’t bleed. Her body is limp in my arms as I push through the double doors of the pack hospital. Every step feels like I’m carrying my own damn heart to the chopping block.“Aegis. Stay awake.” My voice cracks. I lower it so the nurses can’t hear. “Don’t you dare close your eyes on me again.”Her lashes don’t even twitch.I tighten my hold. She feels too light and fragile for someone who’s fought me so hard all day.Emery and Zach are already waiting in the hall. The second they see me, they step forward, hands raised to receive her.“Give her to us,” Emery says calmly.“Move.”“She needs treatment—”“I said move.” My tone drops to a growl.Zach doesn’t budge. His jaw is tight, his fists clenched at his sides.“We’ll take her, Your Highness. You’re too close—”“You take one step closer, and I’ll break your arms. Another step, and I’ll tear them off and feed them to you.”Zach f
