LOGINAegis’s P.O.V
Three hours into dinner, and I was already planning murder.
The murder of my dearly beloved sister.
But that was beside the point.
He was ignoring me.
After last night, I thought we would be closer. If I didn’t know better, I would’ve believed all of it was just a dream. But the soreness between my legs with every step reminded me otherwise.
We were having dinner with the Alpha’s family. The unusual absence of the Alpha and Luna made an already horrible day even worse.
We’d been attending this dinner since we were children. It was a customary tradition between the Alpha’s family and their Betas.
As little kids, whenever dinner lost our interest, we’d sneak outside to play.
We were a formidable trio—Elias the prankster, me the tomboy, and Sheila the princess and baby of the group.
We were close, bound together by the intricacies of living in the pack house as high-ranking children.
But now, the sound of Sheila’s laughter burned like acid in my chest.
Everything she did made me angry.
It hurt so much that I felt rage brewing inside me—for my own sister.
But could I really share the attention of the one person who was supposed to be mine?
Sheila had always been the center of our parents’ attention. I used to blame it on her being the younger child, but deep down, I knew the truth: they simply didn’t care for me. And I couldn’t hate them for it.
I wasn’t their biological daughter anyway.
They adopted me when I was found abandoned in a nearby forest. For that, I was forever grateful.
Still, their favoritism wasn’t subtle.
Sheila and I couldn’t have been more different.
She was friendly; I was socially awkward.
She was confident and beautiful; I was quiet and withdrawn.
She had friends who’d gladly die for her; I only had her.
Everyone believed she was Luna material.
Me? I was simply “the beauty’s sister.”
Or as her friends loved to call me—“the Beast.”
My stomach churned as I pushed food around my plate.
We grew up as different people, and I never minded. Sheila was my sibling, and I was proud of her. She never asked for the attention people gave her. She was just… that good.
As stupid as it sounded, I—her older sister—looked up to her.
She was a role model.
She was one of a kind.
Just as I was.
She was beautiful.
Just as I was.
And my mate was supposed to see that.
But for the first time, I felt something foreign clawing at my chest—
jealousy.
Jealous of all she had that I didn’t.
Jealous of what he saw in her.
Jealous of the memories and friendship they shared.
Watching them together made me realize—
I was the outlier.
The odd one out.
For the third time that night, tears pricked my eyes.
I just wanted a place here.
A place in my mate’s heart.
The scent of cedar and mint hit me all at once—the same scent that had mixed with mine last night. Memories of his touch made me desperate to step into his arms again, to claim his skin as mine, to hold his heart in my hands.
But I couldn’t.
That was my mate.
The other half of my soul.
He was so close… yet so far away.
He must have sensed my thoughts because I felt his eyes on me.
Heat rushed to my face in embarrassment.
Sheila suddenly stood, startling me. She tapped her fork on her wine glass to gather everyone’s attention.
“Would everyone please move to the living room? We have an announcement—and one last gift for the birthday girl.”
Confused, I followed after our parents and Elias.
My birthday had been yesterday. Why a gift now?
I trailed into the common room last, my thoughts still consumed by a certain brown-haired man who was carefully avoiding my gaze.
Sheila smiled at me mischievously and disappeared into another room, reemerging with a large blue box topped with a small red bow. She handed it to me with a grin before lowering her gaze to her strappy black heels.
“This one is from Elias and me.”
Elias stood leaning against the wall instead of joining her in the center of the room. His arms crossed over his chest, muscles flexing.
Temptation gripped me by the throat. Those hands had undressed me the night before.
I sat on the nearest couch, box in hand, my heart pounding.
Was this why he’d been avoiding me?
A gift?
Awn… He was truly a weird man.
I looked up at him with a smile, nearly drowning in his forest-green eyes as I opened the box.
My fingers trembled as I lifted the lid.
And then—my heart stopped.
A beautiful rose-red dress lay folded neatly inside.
On top of it, a silver envelope with elegant lettering:
You are specially invited
to the wedding of:
Elias Jonathan
&
Sheila Davids.
Aegis's POV I could not stop gaping at him…Noah shifted uncomfortably under my gaze as my focus shifted from signing the papers in front of me to his red face and hickey-covered body. The pleased, satisfied glow of good sex covered him, and I could not help but shake my head.He continued sliding papers for me to sign like nothing happened, although he was not able to meet my eyes.Like I had not seen him half-naked in the hallway yesterday. My Beta.My right hand. And the Royal Beta!!!I folded my hands on the kitchen counter as he shifted a particularly big file to me.“You also need to sign this, but go through it first,” he said in a steady voice.I picked up the pen.“Of course,” I said. “Let’s focus on paperwork.”He did not react to that.I read the first page. My eyes moved across the lines, but my mind was not here. I signed anyway. The awkward silence between us dragged out while I signed the next one. Soon after, he packed up the papers and turned away to walk out.“Noah,
Aegis's POV Noah stood there in his boxer and I on Damian's shoulder, both of us blinking at each other.“I’m going back inside,” he said slowly, backing away.“Wise choice,” I muttered. The King kept walking and I remembered what I was shouting for. "This is embarrassing,” I said.“You embarrassed yourself,” he replied.“Lemme guess?” I laughed. “I embarrassed myself because I didn't greet your surprise bride?”He stopped walking for a second and I pushed against him again.“Put. Me. Down.”He shook his head and continued walking until we reached his door. He kicked it open and stepped inside. He set me down on my feet and I stepped back immediately, crossing my arms.He stood two feet away from me with a tick in his jaw and we stared at each other in the silence of the room.“You shut me out,” he said again.“You have a fiancée,” I replied. He looked at me like I had said something stupid. “I do not.”I laughed. “She certainly thinks you do.”He ran a hand through his hair. “My par
Aegis's POV I should have known it was too good to last, I thought as I shoved another chocolate-covered strawberry in my mouth. The kitchen lounge was quiet since the cooks had cleared out after lunch. I sat on a high-rise chair facing the gleaming countertops in the kitchen lounge with a bowl of strawberries in one hand and a small cup of melted chocolate in the other.I angrily stabbed another strawberry with a fork and dipped it into the chocolate.Of course he has a fiancée.Of course no one thought I should know.I bit into the strawberry and relished its sweet and sour taste. I should have known. Everything had been going too well. I chewed slowly and stared unseeing into the distance.God, my heart hurt. The look on his face and the familiarity made me want to throw up. And he didn’t even bother to introduce me. I dipped another strawberry.Maybe I should send her a thank-you basket. “Thank you for reminding me not to get comfortable.”The kitchen door opened while I continue
Aegis's POV “The rogue attack may have reduced, but we still need to find a lasting solution to them.”Come here, Aegis. A voice rumbled in my mind, cutting through the chaos of the room. The inner council chamber walls were lined with dark wood. A long table stood in the center. Eight chairs on each side. One at the head.Damian sat at the head, overlooking all of us.My eyes turned to his focused ones. He wasn’t looking at me, but his voice continued to press on my mind. No, I answered back.He tilted his head and turned to me. I averted my eyes with a small smile, looking through the room.Eleanor Ltavario sat straight, with her long black braids resting over her shoulder and silver eyes watching everything. Mikael Deventus sat beside her, tapping his glowing rings on the table.Alexander Duville leaned back in his chair with his slicked-back hair and cold eyes like he owned the air in the room. On the other side sat General Terel, quietly watching.Aegis… he growled in my mind ag
Aegis's POV “You're so beautiful,” Damian whispered, kissing down my neck.I was half on top of him—half under him—wrapped in his arms and buried in sheets that probably cost more than my entire morning light slipped through the tall palace windows. His chest rose and fell under my cheek. His hand moved slowly up and down my back like he had nowhere else to be.I shifted my leg and winced at the friction. He noticed, and a proud smile spread across his face.“Problem?” he asked smugly.I lifted my head and looked at him with a smirk.“You know exactly what the problem is.”He raised his hands innocently. “I have no idea what you mean.”I tried to swing my leg over him to get up, and my body reminded me of last night immediately. He laughed under his breath.“Help,” I begged, catching my lip between my teeth.“That sounds like a you issue,” he answered, resting back on the pillow.“You’re lucky I like you,” I muttered, pushing myself up on my back.In a swift motion, he pulled me back
Aegis's POV “You cannot expect us to simply accept this,” one of the elders argued, his voice cutting through the stunned room. “The kingdom requires certainty.”Another nodded. “You claim she is your mate. But there has been no formal confirmation from the divine. The last we've heard from the goddess confirmed that you're not supposed to have a mate. We cannot ask the nation to believe in something unproven.”My spine stiffened at the anger pressing against the mindlink. A loud growl permeated the room as a kingly aura pressed against everyone. All of their heads bowed immediately while my dragon purred away in my mind.He didn’t look at me, and he didn’t need to. The bond between us was humming like a drawn blade waiting for release.“You dare doubt my word?” Damian asked with dangerous calmness.“We question nothing but procedure, Your Majesty,” the eldest replied carefully. “If she is truly your fated mate, you must prove it.”The implication hung there.If.My heart pounded as
