I could almost see his head rolling across the giant conference table. A head rolling across the entire room before being turned to its inevitable form_dust. Elijah was about to kill Elias. Okay maybe I’m being dramatic but Elijah was mad mad.

I now understood why Elijah was so particular about me being here. His constant almost wary insistence that I babysit Cece in the conference room today totally made sense now. She calmed him down enough that he wasn’t responsible for murder today, his words not mine. I finally got sworn in as an official member of the pack. Yayy I know. Elijah had been rather smug about it, scratch that he loved it.

A small smile crept on his face at my line of thought. Oh did I forget to tell you. Being connected to the entire pack meant they had 24/7 access to your thoughts and feelings at every moment, well until you block them out that is. And lord knows I wanted to block out a certain big headed handsome Alpha out tonight but I have a feeling he would compl

Aegis's POV I pulled my hand back and stared at it like it had insulted me.It lay in front of me on the granite countertop of the pack’s kitchen, quiet and innocent-looking. A dark metal chain with a small red stone in the center. No glow. No hum. Just there. Like it hadn’t nearly cooked my skin seconds ago.“Right,” I muttered. “Magic.” The quietness of Alpha Stephan’s pack echoed around me. Who in their right mind built their training grounds so far away from the pack house? Oh, that’s right. The wonderful, adulterous Alpha Stephan.I wrapped a cloth around my hand and picked it up again. This time, it stayed calm. No heat or reaction. That’s weird. Why can’t I touch it directly?I turned it over slowly, checking every link. How did such a small thing protect an Alpha from getting killed? Maybe it’s just lucky. But then again, I didn’t believe in lucky objects.I believed in patterns. And this necklace didn’t feel normal.I pulled out my phone and snapped a picture to Kara. Taking

Aegis's POVThe hall went quiet the moment I stepped inside.Every sound felt too loud anyway. The pack members’ boots on the stone floor of the trial hall. The scrape of chairs. The low breath in my chest that refused to slow down. The members parted to allow me to pass with sympathetic looks on their faces. I kept my shoulders straight as I walked to the front. The guards stood in the center of the hall with their hands bound. Their heads were lowered, but I could still see their faces. They were the same ones that led us to the cave.I stopped walking. The King stood beside Alpha Stephan. He was not sitting. His jaw was tight. His hands were locked behind his back like he was holding himself in place. He wanted them dead. That much was clear. The hall filled with the pack. No one talked. They watched the guards the way people watched a wound being cleaned. Curious. Uneasy and ready for it to be over. The King’s voice broke the silence.“Begin.”One of the elders stepped forward. He

Aegis's P.O.V“You're supposed to be on bed rest.”The ash clung to my fingers like guilt. It slipped under my nails and smudged black against pale skin, refusing to let me forget. There has to be something we're missing from the crime scene. A witch that powerful and experienced couldn’t have been that careless.I was kneeling in the wreckage, sifting through broken timber and cold stone, when his voice rolled over me like thunder.“You’re supposed to be resting, Aegis.”My chest tightened. The damn man had a knack for showing up like a haunting headache.I didn’t turn around. Just dug deeper into the soot.Maybe I’d find something—anything—that would make the gnawing in my chest stop. We’re missing something.“Bed rest is for people who enjoy feeling like they’re in a coffin,” I muttered. “I’m not one of them.”“That’s not what the doctor said.”“The doctor doesn’t know what he’s talking about. I’m claustrophobic, not paralyzed.”“How would you know?”The words slipped out before I

(King Damien’s POV)The smell of her blood won’t go away. It’s all over me. It’s wrong. She’s mine. She shouldn’t bleed. Her body is limp in my arms as I push through the double doors of the pack hospital. Every step feels like I’m carrying my own damn heart to the chopping block.“Aegis. Stay awake.” My voice cracks. I lower it so the nurses can’t hear. “Don’t you dare close your eyes on me again.”Her lashes don’t even twitch.I tighten my hold. She feels too light and fragile for someone who’s fought me so hard all day.Emery and Zach are already waiting in the hall. The second they see me, they step forward, hands raised to receive her.“Give her to us,” Emery says calmly.“Move.”“She needs treatment—”“I said move.” My tone drops to a growl.Zach doesn’t budge. His jaw is tight, his fists clenched at his sides.“We’ll take her, Your Highness. You’re too close—”“You take one step closer, and I’ll break your arms. Another step, and I’ll tear them off and feed them to you.”Zach f

Aegis's First Person P.O.V“I can’t breathe. I can’t—I need to get out—”The walls are closing in.No.The ceiling’s falling. It’s getting darker. The air’s thicker. My chest burns.I claw at the rock blocking the exit until my nails split.“Get me out! Get me out of here!”My voice cracks.“Please—please—let me out!”“Aegis!”His voice cuts through the blackness.“Stop—stop hurting yourself.”"I can’t be here… Please, I can’t…”I choke on a rancid sob.I can’t. I can’t stop.My hands keep scraping the stone.Something slicks down my palms, warm.Blood.I can barely feel it.His hand closes firmly around my wrist.“You’re bleeding.”“Don’t touch me! Let me out! Please let me out!”“You’re safe,” he says, voice low, careful like I’m some wild animal.“You’re not trapped. Breathe—just breathe.”Safe.The word means nothing. There’s no air. No light.Just stone and shadows pressing in.The walls are closing in on me.My chest constricts. He steps closer. Hesitant. Careful. His golden eye

Aegis's First Person P.O.VThey were watching me like I was Beyoncé reborn. No, seriously.I could feel the stares. The admiration. The whispers from girls in shiny dresses who looked like they practiced looking effortless. One of them even said—and I quote—“I wish I could be like her.”Cute. But also, awkward.Especially since the man beside me—the actual King—was being treated like he smelled faintly of wet socks. They smiled at me.They bowed at me.And they barely even nodded at him.I didn’t blame them. The King had this permanent scowl like someone had told him brunch was canceled forever. He leaned in close to me. “I hate it here.”I smiled brightly at a group of teen she-wolves ogling my boots. “I love it here.”“I’m serious.”“So am I.”His jaw clenched. “Let’s go.”“I want to stay.”“Aegis.”“You brought me here, remember?” I gave him my best sweet-evil smile. “Now you get to suffer.”He didn’t respond. He just stared like he was debating murder and taxes at the same time.W
