AVERY’S POV:

The psychiatric hospital was tucked just outside the city, surrounded by white-barked trees that looked like skeletons in the morning light. The building itself was a blend of glass and concrete. Almost like it wanted to pretend it wasn’t a place people went to lose their minds.

Inside, the air was cold and dry, perfumed with bleach and artificial calm. A pair of nurses walked past me in mint-green scrubs, their expressions stiff, rehearsed. At a distant corner, a patient sat strapped into a lounge chair, rocking gently while murmuring to the air.

The walls were off-white, the lighting flat. There were paintings—sunsets, lakes, flowers—all hung too precisely. This place wasn’t about healing. It was about maintaining the illusion of order.

“May I help you, ma’am?” A young woman behind the front desk asked.

“I’m here to see Lyra Russell.”

“I’m sorry, visits—”

“Tell your supervisor that Avery Blackwood is here.” I leveled my voice with finality. “You know who I am. So let’s

  • THE WIFE YOU LEFT   CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED & THREE: DRIVE ME INSANE.

AXEL’S POV:Around me—Bodies. My men. My own fucking men.Bullet wounds in their chests, limbs twisted, faces I recognized—gone.I stared at them. My vision finally clear. And I realized.I had done this.Me.Thaddeus stood behind me, his voice broken. “They were trying to stop you. You were… out of your mind.”I blinked at him, confusion breaking across my face like waves. “I—I saw her, Thad. London. I saw her. She was here. She kept—she wouldn’t stop.”He crouched beside me, hands raised, gentle. “There was no one here, boss. No woman. Nothing. Just you. You’d sliced your wrist and they tried to hold you back. But you—”He didn’t finish. He didn’t have to.“I—I don’t remember anything,” I murmured. “Only… London. She was here. I swear she was. I felt her. I heard her. I—” My breath caught in my throat. I looked at my hands again.Shaking. Bloodied. Empty.Thaddeus stood. “What do we do now?”I swallowed hard.Tears burned my eyes, but I forced them back. There could be no weakness

  • THE WIFE YOU LEFT   CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED & TWO: A HOUSE THAT WHISPERS.

AXEL’S POV:The message burned into my retinas. And that text.I spun on my heel, storming out of the estate like the devil himself was on my back.“Thaddeus!” I barked. “Someone has her.”His eyes widened as he caught the look on my face. He opened the SUV door without a word. He understood what I was talking about. Inside, I didn’t waste a second.I sent the message and the image to Serena."Find this. Now."The screen blurred with how hard my hands were shaking. The silence between each second stretched like a scream I couldn’t let out.I tapped my lap like a beast chained to asphalt. My breath was shallow, hot with rage. “Come on, come on…”Then—ding."Got it. Coordinates coming in. Sending now," Serena texted."Good. Half the team secures the house. I want the rest en route to this location. Full tactical. Send it now. No delays," I instructed through a text to Baron. I looked at Thaddeus. “We’re not waiting. Also, call in everyone. It's going to be a bloodbath."He nodded once

  • THE WIFE YOU LEFT   CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED & ONE: DRY BONES SHALL LIVE AGAIN.

AXEL’S POV:I sat in the back of the car, my phone vibrating non-stop as headlines accused me of murdering Kaidenn Cassius."Billionaire turns bloodthirsty: Is Axel Blackwood eliminating competition—again?"A joke.A man gets dismembered and tossed around like some sick party favor, and the world pins it on me because he switched sides.Someone was fueling this rumor and now the list was too broad to narrow it down. Was it Ryan or one of his minions? An old business associate or someone I made an enemy of.I threw the phone to the other seat and leaned back, breathing easily while trying to relax. The bakery prick had also refused our offer—again. This time with more teeth. Said he’d sue if anyone from MedixGen reached out to him again. Thought having a crusty family-owned sign made him invincible.I had no intention of resorting to underhanded tactics. Despite their persistent provocation, I was determined to maintain a civil approach. My goal was to avoid violence or intimidation, o

  • THE WIFE YOU LEFT   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED & NINETY-NINE: UNSEEN GAME.

AVERY’S POV:Sleep never came. Not even for a minute. The slap still replayed somewhere in my mind. But it wasn’t just the sting of Axel’s hand on my face—it was the humiliation. The trigger. The realization that he didn’t just hate me in that moment… he stopped seeing me.I lay in the dark, staring at the ceiling until the first light touched the window. My eyes burned, but there were no tears left to give. I had tried to protect us. Tried to salvage something from the chaos. I had a plan. A card left to play. But Esmeraya and Ryan had already poisoned the table. Whatever leverage we thought we had was crumbling beneath us.How the fuck was Ryan alive? I killed him myself.Still… we had the numbers now. And that meant something.I dragged myself out of bed and got dressed, choosing black. Neat lines. High collar. Something that looked like armor even if I didn’t feel it. Immediately I got downstairs, the television on the wall came on with a loud ding from the living room across the

AXEL’S POV:Ryan’s voice twisted behind me, but I didn’t hear what he said. It didn’t matter. The only thing that mattered was getting to them.I sprinted down the hallway, ignoring the confusion in the corridors, the alarms that hadn’t started yet but would. I could feel it in my bones—something terrible was coming. But I was too late. The explosion hit.A deafening boom. Then everything went white. The floor buckled beneath me. Walls fractured like dry bones. Ceiling panels collapsed in bursts of smoke and fire. Shards of glass rained like knives. Flames leapt into the corridor like they’d been waiting.I slammed into the floor, rolling hard, coughing through the dust and grit.Chaos surged all around me.Screams.Metal creaking.Someone crying out for help.“Get back!” I barked, pushing to my feet as emergency sprinklers hissed above. “Everyone out—now! Secure the west wing and evacuate the lower floors!”Baron’s voice punched through the smoke on the comms.“We’ve got breach teams
