Aria’s legs ached, her lungs burned, but she kept moving. The forest around her seemed endless, dark, and cold, yet she didn’t dare stop. Behind her, Kael’s black form loomed like a shadow of protection, keeping the rogue wolves at bay. She had no idea how he had appeared so suddenly, but somehow, instinctively, she trusted him.

“Stay close,” Kael’s deep voice rumbled. Even though it was calm, it carried the weight of an unspoken threat. “One wrong move and they’ll regret ever touching you.”

Aria swallowed nervously. She had been raised to respect Alphas, yet something about Kael felt different—not like the harsh authority of Alpha Magnus who had banished her, but commanding in a way that made her feel both terrified and safe.

I…I’m sorry, she stammered, her voice barely audible. “I didn’t mean to trespass.”

Kael’s silver eyes flicked to her, studying every movement. “You didn’t trespass,” he said quietly. “But wandering into rogue territory without a pack is… dangerous.”

Aria looked down at her hands, still trembling from exhaustion. “I don’t… I don’t have a pack anymore,” she admitted, her voice breaking slightly. “The Silver Moon Pack…

“They turned away,” Kael finished for her, his gaze softening ever so slightly. “I’ve heard whispers about your story.”

Aria froze. “Whispers?”

“Yes,” Kael said firmly. “About the wolfless girl of the Moonveil bloodline. They said she has no wolf. That she is… a defect.”

The words cut her like knives. She had heard them before from her old pack, from the warriors who had once called her friend. The humiliation, the pain, the betrayal, it all came rushing back. She pressed her arms across her chest, trying to hold back tears.

Kael shifted slightly, his presence overwhelming yet protective. “But I don’t believe them,” he said softly. “And I don’t leave my mate alone in the dark.”

Aria’s heart skipped. Mate. The word still sounded strange to her, yet something deep inside stirred when she heard it. She had always felt incomplete, like a part of her soul was missing. Could this… this man… be that missing piece?

Before she could dwell on it, Kael guided her through a hidden path in the forest. The trees parted to reveal a stone bridge over a small, misty river. The air smelled different here, cleaner, almost sacred. Kael stopped at the center of the bridge, his gaze sweeping the forest behind them.

“They won’t follow us this far,” he said, though he didn’t sound completely certain. “But you need to be careful. There are others who wouldn’t hesitate to take advantage of a lone girl without a wolf.”

Aria nodded, swallowing hard. “I… I don’t even know how to survive outside my pack.”

“You will,” Kael said, his voice soft yet unwavering. “And I will make sure of it.”

They continued walking until the trees began to thin. Soon, they reached the edge of a cliff overlooking a valley where smoke curled from chimneys far below—an entire pack territory lay beneath them, bustling with life.

“This is my pack,” Kael said, his voice tinged with pride. “Shadow Fang.”

Aria’s eyes widened. From here, it was impossible to see the individual wolves, but the size of the territory spoke volumes. This was a pack of power, not just numbers. She could feel the energy radiating from the land and the pulse of wolves in harmony with one another.

Kael led her down a winding path to a large stone gate carved with the Shadow Fang emblem. A  silver wolf leaping over a crescent moon. At the gate, two massive wolf sentries stood, their amber eyes glowing under the moonlight.

“Alpha Kael,” one of them rumbled, bowing slightly. “We sensed your presence.”

Kael inclined his head. “This is Aria,” he said. “My mate.”

The sentries’ eyes widened slightly at her presence. One of them stepped forward, examining her carefully. “Mate?” he asked, almost in disbelief. “But…she’s…wolfless?”

Aria stiffened, uncomfortable under the scrutiny. Kael’s gaze immediately snapped to the sentry, and though his voice was calm, it carried an unmistakable edge.

“She may not have awakened yet,” Kael said firmly. “But do not question her. She is under my protection.”

The sentry bowed again, more respectfully this time. “Yes, Alpha.”

The gates opened slowly, and Aria stepped inside, her heart hammering in her chest. The courtyard beyond was alive with wolves of every size, every color. Some stared openly, curious; others whispered behind hands, their eyes skeptical.

Aria felt her confidence shrink with every passing glance. She had been a part of a pack once. She had known friends, allies, and family here. Now, she was an outsider.

Kael noticed her discomfort. He placed a hand lightly on her shoulder. “Ignore them,” he murmured. “You’re not here to prove yourself to anyone but me and soon, to yourself.”

Aria’s heart skipped again. There was something in his words…a promise, a certainty that made the fear in her chest recede just slightly.

A wolf emerged from the shadows, tall and muscular, with striking golden eyes. Aria recognized him immediately from the stories she had overheard in the forest…the Beta of Shadow Fang Pack, Kael’s right hand.

“Beta Rowan,” Kael said. “She will stay under your supervision until I see fit.”

Rowan’s gaze swept over her, sharp yet not unkind. “Understood, Alpha,” he said. Then he looked at her. “You’ve been through a lot,” he said softly. “You’ll need guidance. I’ll help you.”

Aria exhaled, relief washing over her. For the first time since being banished, she felt a flicker of hope.

But that hope was fragile.

As she followed Rowan through the pack’s compound, she couldn’t help but notice the glances of some wolves. Some skeptical, some curious, some openly hostile. One young female wolf with golden hair and piercing green eyes caught her gaze, smirking as if daring her to challenge her place.

Aria kept her eyes down, silently vowing to survive this new environment.

Later, in a quiet clearing behind the Alpha’s residence, Rowan stopped and turned to her. “Listen carefully,” he said. “Shadow Fang Pack has rules. You are new here, and some will not accept you. You will have to prove yourself… not with your wolf, but with your courage and intelligence. Do you understand?”

Aria nodded. “Yes, Beta Rowan.”

“Good,” he said. “And one more thing… Alpha Kael does not trust easily. If you want to survive here, you’ll need to earn his trust as well.”

Aria’s pulse quickened. Trust the Alpha? She barely knew him. And yet, there was an unspoken connection, a pull she could not ignore.

Suddenly, a howl split the night sky. Not one wolf, but many. It came from deep within the forest, far beyond the pack territory.

Rowan’s ears twitched. “That’s unusual,” he muttered. “The northern territories have been quiet since the rogue activity last month.”

Aria felt a shiver run down her spine. A strange instinct prickled in her mind with a warning she could not explain.

Kael’s voice rang out from behind them. “I heard it too.”

He appeared silently, stepping beside her, his gaze scanning the horizon. “Prepare yourself,” he said. “This pack may be powerful, but the world beyond our borders is growing restless. And you… will play a role in what comes next.”

Aria’s heart hammered against her ribs. She didn’t understand what he meant, but she felt it in her bones. Something was coming. Something that would test her in ways she could not yet imagine.

And deep inside, beneath her fear and uncertainty, a small spark of determination began to grow.

She had been rejected, banished, and cast aside.

But now… she had a place. A purpose.

And she would not fail.

They didn’t move like wolves. They didn’t move like humans either.Aria’s breath caught as the figures emerged from the shadows. Silent, controlled and unnatural. Their presence pressed against her senses in such a way that felt familiar.Too familiar. Her heart pounded violently.Because something inside her, had recognized them. What are they? she whispered. No one answered immediately.Even Kael had gone still. But it was not fear that tightened his expression. It was something worse.Recognition.They shouldn’t exist?
