Sophie's water broke at ten past four in the morning, in the middle of a dream about cheese.

She lay very still for a moment, blinking at the ceiling, while a warm and unmistakable rush soaked the sheet beneath her. Beside her, Julian slept on his stomach with one arm flung over her pillow, mouth slightly open, completely unaware that his entire life was about to change.

"Julian," she said.

Nothing.

"Julian."

A grunt.

"Julian, my water's broken."

He was upright before she finished the sentence.

  • THE WRONG TWIN    EPILOGUE

Ten years later, the toast was still burning.Sophie stood in the kitchen doorway at Harcourt Bay with one hand on the frame and watched her husband wave a tea towel at the smoke alarm, the way she had watched him every Wednesday morning for a decade. His hair had gone silver at the temples. There was a pencil behind his ear, a smear of jam on his cuff, and a seven-year-old boy sitting on the counter beside him, shouting instructions."Higher, Dad! You're not *committing!*""I am committing, Edmund. I'm committing as hard as I can.""The alarm doesn't care!""The alarm," said Julian, "is a coward."The alarm gave a last shrill wail and fell silent. Julian lowered the towel in triumph. The boy, a small, serious child with his grandfather's grey eyes and his father's chin, nodded with grave approval, then caught sight of his mother and beamed."Mum! He did it!""I saw.""He said a bad word first.""I did not.""You said *blast*.""Blast is not a bad word," said Julian, "it's an expressi

The first winter after Rose was born came in soft and silver, and by the time it had gone, Sophie had stopped counting the weeks and started counting the small things instead. The first real smile, delivered at dawn to the ceiling fan and nobody else. The first night Rose slept for six hours straight, after which both parents woke at three in a panic and crept to the cot to check she was breathing. The first time Julian burned the toast and then, for the first time in his life, laughed instead of swearing. The morning she finished the last silver rose on the christening gown, sitting under the apple tree with a needle in her fingers and Edmund watching from the terrace with his cup of tea gone cold. He hadn't said a word. He had simply stood, walked across the lawn, laid one hand on her shoulder, and stayed there until she tied off the thread.Life at Harcourt Bay had found its rhythm. Julian worked in the mornings and came home for lunch, pretending it was a coincidence. Sophie wrote

He sat bolt straight in the dark, hair on end, eyes wide, and said, in a voice of pure alarm, "Is that today?""It's thirty-nine weeks. I think it might be today.""Right." He swung his legs out of bed and stood up. Then he sat down again. Then he stood up. "Right. The bag. The car. The—where are my trousers?""You're wearing them."He looked down. He was, in fact, wearing yesterday's trousers, because he had fallen into bed in them after assembling a cot until midnight. "Excellent," he said fa

By the time Sophie reached her third trimester, the placenta had done exactly what Dr. Raheem's colleague in London said it would. It had climbed, quietly and without fuss, out of the way, and a scan at twenty-four weeks had pronounced everything *textbook*. Julian had made the doctor say it twice. Then he'd taken Sophie to lunch and ordered three desserts, because, he said, textbook deserved a celebration. Now, at thirty-one weeks, she stood on the terrace at Harcourt Bay with one hand on the small of her back, looking down at the garden, and could not decide whether to laugh or cry."Don't," said her mother, appearing at her elbow with a glass of elderflower cordial. "Not before the guests arrive. You'll set me off, and I've only just done my face.""I'm not crying.""Your chin is doing the thing.""My chin is not doing a thing.""It's wobbling. It did that when you were four and the ice cream fell off the cone." Her mother pressed the glass into her hand. "Drink. Sit. You are not t

  • THE WRONG TWIN    Chapter Forty Eight - Slow Water

On the eleventh morning of the honeymoon, Sophie woke to the sound of the sea and a man humming off-key against her shoulder blade. The villa stood on stilts over the lagoon, a long, pale room of whitewashed wood and open glass, and the water beneath it was so clear that from the bed she could watch small silver fish drift through the shadows. The ceiling fan turned. A breeze stirred the gauze curtains. Everything smelled of salt and frangipani and the sun-warmed linen of a bed that had not once been properly made in eleven days."You're humming," she said."I'm serenading you.""It's a sea shanty.""It's a *love* shanty." Julian propped himself on one elbow, sun-browned and sleepy, hair falling into his eyes. "I wrote it last night while you were asleep. It has four verses. The third one rhymes 'Sophie' with 'coffee.'""It does not.""It does if you're committed." He kissed her bare shoulder, then the curve of her neck. "Good morning, Mrs. Hale.""Good morning, Mr. Hale."Eleven days

  • THE WRONG TWIN    Chapter Forty Seven - The Morning After

At three in the morning, Sophie woke with the particular urgency of a pregnant woman and a bladder the size of a walnut. She lay still for a moment, listening to the rain ease into a soft drip against the gutter, and to the steady breathing of the man whose arm was slung heavy across her waist. Then the urgency won. She slid out from under his arm, found his shirt on the floor, and shrugged it on, the sleeves swallowing her hands, the hem reaching her thighs. It smelled of him, of cedar and warm skin and the faint ghost of the wedding. The bathroom floor was cold. She took her time, washed her hands, and caught sight of herself in the mirror: hair a wild tangle, lips swollen, a faint flush still riding high on her cheeks. A woman who had been thoroughly loved. She pressed her fingers to her mouth and smiled at her own reflection like a girl with a secret. When she padded back into the bedroom, the lamp was on.
