All the Knives We Sleep With

last update Terakhir Diperbarui: 2025-07-05 05:40:12

Time: 2:46 a.m.

Location: Navarro Estate – Lower East Wing

Weather: Still, 64°F

The hall was dark and silent, but not empty.

Eli walked barefoot on cold tiles, moving like something carved from midnight. A gun pressed into the back of his waistband, ribs still taped. His heart beat steady, but his thoughts didn’t.

He wasn’t sure what dragged him from bed that hour—the dream, or the memory that came after. A scream. A locked door. A promise broken by blood.

Time: 2:53 a.m.

Location: Jayce’s Private Quarters

Jayce was sitting by the open window, bare-chested, sweat clinging to his skin, a Glock resting on his thigh. The smoke from his cigar twisted in the air like a sermon from hell.

He didn’t turn when Eli stepped in.

“You pacing ghosts again?” Jayce asked.

Eli answered with silence.

Jayce sipped whiskey and looked at the moon. “We don’t sleep, do we?”

“Sleep’s for people who made peace with themselves.”

Jayce finally turned. “And what are we?”

“Monsters,” Eli said, walking to the window.

“Monsters don’t bleed.”

“Don’t they?” Eli said softly, brushing his fingers across the scar on Jayce’s shoulder.

Time: 3:19 a.m.

Location: Estate Gym

The lights buzzed low. Eli stood in front of the punching bag, gloved, sweat dripping off his chin. Every punch he threw echoed like a gunshot.

Jayce watched from the shadows. “You hit like you’re mad at being alive.”

“I am.”

Jayce stepped closer. “What happened to you?”

Eli paused. The gloves fell to the ground.

“There was a boy,” he said quietly. “He loved me once. But when it came time to choose, he closed the door. And left me behind it.”

Jayce swallowed. “And you never forgave him?”

Eli looked up. “I buried him. But the ghost still follows me.”

Jayce stared. “Then maybe we should bury your past together.”

Time: 8:41 a.m.

Location: Rooftop, Navarro Estate

Morning air cut sharp through Eli’s lungs. The city blinked below. But it didn’t feel like sunrise. It felt like a countdown.

Jayce joined him, cup of coffee in hand.

“Someone’s moving against us,” Jayce said. “Fast. Quiet. The governor called last night.”

Eli kept his eyes on the skyline.

“They want my name. Your name. Maybe both.”

Jayce took a long breath. “You ever think maybe we deserve it?”

Eli nodded. “I think we deserve worse.”

“But not today,” Jayce said, sipping.

They stood without speaking again, until Eli whispered, “Do you trust me, Jayce?”

Jayce looked at him.

“Not with my empire,” he said. “But maybe with my ruin.”

Time: 10:02 a.m.

Location: Mama Inez’s Prayer Room

Mama Inez placed her fingers on Eli’s chest and frowned.

“Your spirit carries knives,” she said.

“I know.”

She stepped back, pouring ash over the flame.

“You sleep alone?” she asked.

Eli hesitated. “Even when I don’t, I do.”

She nodded. “Then be careful. Jayce Navarro sleeps with matches. Put two broken fires in the same bed, and sooner or later, something burns.”

Time: 1:26 p.m.

Location: War Room Vault

Jayce tossed Eli a folder. “One of the suppliers turned. The East Wing’s been bugged.”

Eli flipped through. “Then they’re already inside.”

Jayce nodded. “This goes deeper than we thought.”

Eli’s fingers trembled for a moment. “You think it’s Keon?”

“No. But I think it’s someone who knows what I won’t sacrifice.”

Jayce met Eli’s eyes.

“I won’t lose this place. Not again. Not for love. Not for you.”

Eli nodded slowly. “Then kill me now.”

Jayce stepped forward, quiet, slow.

And wrapped a hand around the back of Eli’s neck.

“I’d rather burn with you.”
