Where Death Has Eyes

last update Last Updated: 2025-07-10 19:26:42

SCENE 1: THE BOY WHO DIDN’T BLEED RIGHT

POV: Eli Mercer

Location: Valeburn — Funeral Home

Tuesday morning broke on a city dressed in gray. It rained without thunder—just a steady drizzle like God was tired of yelling.

The funeral parlor sat low and tired beneath the shadow of a liquor store and a crumbling church. Inside, the boy who had died behind the basketball court—seventeen, nameless to most—lay in a pine box too small for his unfinished story.

Eli stood at the back. Hoodie up. Hands shaking.

There were only four people present: a crying aunt, two strangers from the block, and Mama Inez—who sat in the front row, hands laced like prayer had grown thorns.

He hadn’t known the kid. But that didn’t stop the guilt from biting.

Mama Inez turned slowly and looked straight at him.

> "Death got eyes now, Eli. And they watching you."

He swallowed the scream that tried to crawl out his throat.

SCENE 2: KINGDOMS FALL ON QUIET DAYS

POV: Jayce Navarro

Location: Navarro Estate — War Room

Jayce stared at the chessboard. Not metaphorically—literally.

He moved his knight forward, knocked a pawn aside, then reset the board again.

Keon stood by the door. Silent. Watching.

“The boy that got shot,” Keon finally said, “people saying you let it happen.”

Jayce didn’t flinch.

“And Eli?”

Jayce’s eyes narrowed. “Eli’s watching for smoke I haven’t started yet.”

Keon stepped closer. “You still trust him?”

“I trust him to do what I wouldn’t.”

A beat.

Keon folded his arms. “People are calling you soft. For him.”

Jayce smiled darkly. “Then let them bleed to prove I’m not.”

SCENE 3: A BODY FOR A BODY

POV: Eli Mercer

Location: Naomi’s Chop Shop Garage

The smell of gasoline and iron lingered like old sins.

Naomi “No-No” Raines wiped her hands on a rag, eyes cutting sideways at Eli.

“You walkin’ like a man who forgot what street he on.”

Eli handed her a flash drive. “Surveillance footage. Warehouse attack. The face you’ll see—Keon.”

Her eyebrows lifted.

“Jayce’s man?”

Eli nodded. “Time to ask if kings can bleed.”

She tucked the drive into her bra and grinned. “Then maybe it’s time we tear the crown in half.”

Outside, thunder finally rumbled.

SCENE 4: WHERE DEATH HAS EYES

POV: Dual (Jayce & Eli)

Location: Jayce’s Rooftop Garden — Night

The rooftop smelled of wet earth and rosewater. Jayce had always kept something alive up here—some reminder that he wasn’t all bullet and bone.

Eli stepped out of the stairwell like he’d been summoned.

They said nothing at first.

Jayce lit a blunt. Handed it over.

Eli took it. Inhaled.

“You think we’re getting out of this?” Eli asked.

Jayce looked up at the stars. “Getting out or surviving it?”

Eli: “Difference?”

Jayce: “Surviving means you live through it. Getting out means it don’t live through you.”

They sat. Shoulder to shoulder. The silence between them hurt more than their arguments ever had.

“I know about Keon,” Jayce said finally.

Eli’s fingers froze.

“I’m gonna kill him,” Jayce added.

“You sure?”

Jayce turned to him. “I have to be. Because if I let him breathe, you’ll stop trusting me. And I can’t lose that—not again.”

Eli didn’t reply.

But his hand slid over Jayce’s slowly. Tight.

Like an answer.

Like a warning.

SCENE 5: THE BURDEN OF CROWNS

POV: Jayce Navarro

Location: Abandoned Pool Hall

Keon waited inside, gun on the table.

Jayce entered alone.

The place stank of mold, smoke, and memories.

“You sent Eli,” Keon said.

Jayce replied, “You gave him a reason.”

Keon picked up the gun but didn’t aim it. “I took bullets for you, Jayce. Buried people. Killed names.”

“I know.”

“And you think I’d betray you?”

“I don’t think it, Keon. I saw it.”

Silence.

Jayce walked to the table. Took out a second gun. Set it beside the first.

“One each,” he said.

Keon’s eyes narrowed. “You love him more than the throne?”

Jayce didn’t blink. “No. I just finally love something more than myself.”

The shots came quick.

When the smoke cleared, only one man walked out.

SCENE 6: THE FIRE IS A PRAYER

POV: Eli Mercer

Location: East Gate Overlook — Dawn

The city hadn’t changed, but something in Eli had.

The air smelled cleaner. The silence deeper.

Jayce walked up beside him. No guards. No noise.

“You did it,” Eli said.

“No,” Jayce replied. “We did.”

They stood, watching Valeburn stretch beneath a new sun.

“We got one more war left,” Eli murmured.

Jayce smiled. “Then let’s start with fire.”
