Liberty pov

A hand is placed on my shoulder causing me to jump. Gasping, I open my eyes and look straight into MacKenzie's friendly face. It takes me a few seconds to get my bearings back. I was dreaming. I get up and take my place on the log to guard Madelin and MacKenzie.

Sitting and staring at the stars I get the strong feeling that it wasn’t a dream it was a vision. would I have seen more if MacKenzie hadn’t woken me up? Now I don’t know if it was a warning or not. Based on the feeling of being watched I’m tempted to perceive it as a warning.

In the distance I hear the leaves rustle but there’s no wind. I could be an animal. Curiosity gets the better of me and I quietly get up to investigate the source of the noise.

/I don’t want to wake her if it’s a deer or some other animal,/ I defend my recklessness.

Naveah is on high alert, her sense of smell and hearing picking up nothing

Liberty povMacKenzie and Madelin have stopped talking. Both are looking at me as if I’ve grown horns. “You look worried and were mumbling under your breath,” Madelin carefully inquires, “Ever since you’ve laid eyes on MacKenzie you seem out of sorts. Are you okay? Do you two know each other?” Madelin asks me, her face is concerned and her eyes bore into mine. “MacKenzie and I have never met. She just reminds me of someone I used to know. She’s no longer here,” the sad smile on my face appears naturally. I can see that Madelin wants to ask more but she refrains. We have a challenging couple of days ahead. “Let’s talk tactics,” Madelin changes the subject to the here and now, “MacKenzie, how good of a fighter are you?” “Not really a fighter. I’m training to be a nanny and housekeeper. I never volunteered for this. Prince Hartley ordered me to join him today and then suddenly I was part of your team,” MacKenzie's brow creases with concern.“Are your reflexes good? And are you fast?

Liberty povAfter my visit to the trading post I took a detour back to the inn. I needed time to think. I needed to apologise and to some extent explain my behaviour to Madelin. When I entered I saw her sitting at a table by herself. Worry was etched on her face. She was twisting a lock of long black hair round her index finger. I’ve noticed that she does that when she’s worried. “Hey Maddy, you okay?” I ask her as I sit down next to her. She stops twisting her hair. “Hi. yeah sort of. I’m worried about tomorrow. That we’ll be an easy target together. We could have been the strongest group had we teamed up with Candy.” The distress is evident in her voice and her usually cheery face looks stressed. “I know. It’s just the way she provoked Tomas earlier today. She’s no good. We need to be able to trust whoever is in our team. She’s manipulative and I don’t want to watch my back twice. We know team Candy will be hunting for us. We’ll just have to avoid them as long as possible.” I si

  • Thrown Back by the Moon Goddess   14. Who are you Liberty?

Maverick povI’m in my office thinking back to today. The spar with Hartley was intense. I didn’t expect that level of violence and aggression from him. We’d sparred before and we’re both out to win but not to harm each other. Until now that is.Is this because of Liberty? Does he feel a pull to her? They’re not mates because they would’ve said something if they were. She and I are not mates either. She couldn’t have recognised me as her mate but I could have recognised her./Unless she also used a scent suppressing tincture,/ Gunner offers. /What are the odds? Most wolves and lycans alike want to find their mate.//We do too eventually but not now,/ Gunner checks with me. He and I don’t see completely eye to eye on the matter of actively postponing finding our mate. He feels that if we meet her it’s fate. According to Gunner you don’t mess with fate. “Maverick! Can I come and see you?” York practically shouts through the mindlink causing me to startle.“Yeah sure.” I sigh while I

Liberty povMadelin and I walk back to the White Hart Inn where we’re staying during the selection trials. Madelin is recapping the day, telling how impressed she is with my calm demeanor and level head. How far I’ve come in just three months. I let her words flow over me like a calming stream. Her voice is warm and soothing. My mind is elsewhere, during my first selection attempt I was attacked by rogues on the second day. Things are different now. The selection is a knock-out instead of at the end of the trial days. Maybe that means there’s no rogues tomorrow? Can I take the risk that there will be rogues tomorrow?I cringe when I think back to that day. During the second day I was attacked by rogues. I was nowhere near competent enough to fight him off on my own but with Naveah I should have at least been able to hold my own. But I couldn’t reach her, she was gone. My father broke all rules to save me that day. Viera admitted to giving me wolfsbane shortly before I died. But I

  • Thrown Back by the Moon Goddess   12. Maverick vs Hartley

King Truett’s eyes glaze over, showing he is mindlinking someone. When they clear he looks at his sons. “As you both seem to be eager to fight today you will fight each other. The last match is finished, the field is yours. Now get down and get whatever pent up energy and issues out of your systems, his entire demeanor is stern. Slowly I relax, it seems that I get to live another day. The discontent is written on Hartley’s face, but he knows better than to go against his father.“Father, I apologise you were right this is not the time nor the place for a Lycan prince to spar,” Hartley tries backing out.“Ah but little brother, just a few minutes ago you were chomping at the bit to spar. Was it just a ruse to get your hands on the talented archer over here?” Maverick is now openly calling his brother out. This can not end well. The question is for who will this not end well? Me? Hartley? Maverick? The two brothers stare at each other, neither is able to keep the disdain for the
