MacKenzie and Madeline have stopped talking. Both are looking at me as if I’ve grown horns.

“You look worried and were mumbling under your breath,” Madeline carefully inquires, “Ever since you’ve laid eyes on MacKenzie you seem out of sorts. Are you okay? Do you two know each other?” Madeline asks me, her face is concerned and her eyes bore into mine.

“MacKenzie and I have never met. She just reminds me of someone I used to know. She’s no longer here,” the sad smile on my face appears naturally.

I can see that Madeline wants to ask more but she refrains. We have a challenging couple of days ahead.

“Let’s talk tactics,” Madeline changes the subject to the here and now, “MacKenzie, how good of a fighter are you?”

“Not really a fighter. I’m training to be a nanny and housekeeper. I never volunteered for this. Prince Hartley ordered me to join him today and then suddenly I was part of your team,” MacKenzie's brow creases with concern.

“Are your reflexes good? And are you f

Liberty pov“Yes, she mentioned pansies, cornflowers and alyssum. I’d never heard of the last one. It’s a small white flower. It smells nice. Mary-Jane did her best. I hope she doesn’t feel too guilty about it,”“I’m sure she’ll live, where is she?” “She’s not downstairs?” “No,” It’s all I can manage without letting my anger show.“Let’s get you out of the bath. I’ve put clean bedding on the bed,” I smile at Mom./She’s tried to poison Mom. I don’t care if it’s by accident or not. Because I don’t believe it’s an accident for a second,/ I fume at Naveah./Neither do I. Maybe we can eat with her and mom and then switch the plates? So that she eats the bloody Night Blooming Jasmine and not us?/ Naveah responds, equally furious. /That would be an idea, but I’m not taking any risks. We’re going to see Olwyn to get something to counteract the poison. I don’t trust her a bit. Maybe she too ate the damned flowers but has some sort of antidote so she doesn’t get sick. But first we’re going

Liberty pov“Dad, who is Crescent’s Moon’s current Alpha?” “I don't know yet, the Alpha Council is next month. Why this question?” Dad answers me.“Because I would have expected King Truett to send messengers out to inform the packs of Alpha John’s death.” “Hmm, and now the whole truth Liberty,” Dad smiles.“Mary-Jane told me her mate died in the same battle as Alpha John. I’d missed the news that the bastard had passed.”“So you doubted her story?”“Yes.”“Why do you doubt her story?” Dad now looks seriously at me. “Because I don’t trust her. It just doesn’t make sense. Why is she so attached to Howling Moon? She’s never lived here. And she’s inserting herself in our lives in a way I don’t like,” I feel myself pouting. “How does she insert herself in your life?” Dad asks, his tone of voice genuine.“Wanting to do ‘fun stuff’ with me. Like going for brunch. She’s old enough to be my mother, she’s too old to be my friend. And then she tries to set up family things with Cooper, you

Liberty pov Mary-Jane, or Roja, as she wants me to call her, has been playing the damsel-in-distress and grieving mate role perfectly. My mother fusses over her and my father feels obliged to keep her in the house as her father was his fathers best friend. I’ve been watching her trying to be alone with my father. She usually does that by saying something along the lines of ‘I’m really craving strawberries,’ she then walks to the fridge and says, ‘Oh what a pity there’s no strawberries. They’re in season too. Clarence used to bring me strawberries. Shania, if you go to the shops tomorrow could you bring some strawberries?’My mother would then feel guilty and hurry to the shop to get strawberries, while Roja would cry about missing Clarence on my fathers shoulder. Dad would then apprehensively put an arm around her as she would try to nestle herself in his chest. Dad’s face would be uncomfortable and he would find every and any excuse to get her off of his shoulder. When my mother ret

Liberty povMom wraps her arm around Mary-Jane's shoulder to support her. Mary-Jane rests her head on Mom's shoulder and sniffles. I do my best not to eyeroll. I catch Cooper looking at me with a raised eyebrow. I’m sure he’ll have questions later. “I think I’ll go for a walk before I turn in. Care to keep my company Libby?” Cooper announces as he gets up from his chair.“Of course! It will give us some time to catch up,” I gratefully reply, happy with an opportunity to no longer have to share a space with Mary-Jane.“What is that all about?” Cooper doesn’t beat about the bush, the moment we get outside.“Honestly? I don’t trust her. Things just don’t feel right with Mary-Jane. Mom and Dad barely know her. I can’t remember ever hearing about her let alone meeting her and now this is the place she wants to grow old now her mate has died. It just doesn’t make sense to me. Maybe I’m suspicious of her but over the past month’s I’ve learnt to trust my gut,” answer him honestly. Even with

Liberty povSummer break has started. Madeline and I said goodbye to Martin who will be returning to his own pack. Madeline and I travelled in silence, each in our own thoughts. I was thinking about how I would get through the summer break. She was thinking about Martin. I’m curious why Martin and Madeline have decided to not accept each other as chosen mates. They just belong together. I can’t imagine one of them finding their fated mate. It would leave the other heartbroken.I would have gladly given up my fated mate to be with Maverick. But then again that’s easy for me to say as a part of the pull between me and Maverick can be explained as us likely being mates. Thinking of Maverick makes me smile and cry at the same time. I cherish the memories we made together in the short time we had and mourn all of the things we will never get to experience together. “What are we going to do this summer?” I ask Madeline in an attempt to stop thinking about Maverick.“Train, run, sun bathe,

  • Thrown Back by the Moon Goddess   57. What could hve been

Liberty povEverything seems surreal. Life for everyone around me seems to move one while I stand still. Frozen in time. Everything is difficult, it’s as if I’m walking though loose beach sand while everyone else seems to be traveling over nice smooth paved roads. Naveah is quiet. Mourning the loss of Maverick and Gunner in a far corner of my mind. On the fourth day of mourning I went to the administration to ask if I could have the spare key to Mavericks room. I need to be in his presence one last time. As I’m just his girlfriend and nothing official I presume that his father will have his room cleaned out shortly after the mourning period. I want to take some of his clothes and maybe something else to remember him by. I doubt that his father will notice if I take a couple of shirts. I hope I can find something that I can remember him by that’s not something they will miss. Something that will not wear down over time. When I enter the administration Mrs. Howard spots me and comes
