Aurora

Incompetent people were the next thing I hated more than Damien. I hate them in everything in me.

I hated them more if their incompetence affected my work.

And right now, it was.

My heels clicked against the marble floor hard as I strode through the executive wing, heading for the sales manager’s office.

The human had ignored three calls.

Three business calls during working hours.

I wasn’t paying people six-figure salaries so they could pretend their phones didn’t exist.

While my phone

  • TOO LATE TO WANT ME BACK, MR CEO   CHAPTER 47

DamienWhen Genevieve pulled away from me and glanced at Aurora, it dawned on me what she wanted to achieve.Aurora looked seconds away from breaking into different little pieces emotionally.Aurora staggered forward, and the guest made way for her. The pretty woman headed for the entrance and walked through it.From across the room, my eyes met Leila. She rubbed her forehead with what I assumed was a sigh.I glared at Genevieve. “What was that?” My voice was a cold, angry whisper. She smiled sweetly, making my insides burn with fury.“Our agreement, of course,” she said. “You were enjoying yourself too much, so I thought I should claim what is mine back.”Pulling away from her, I hurried to the entrance, calling for Aurora. She turned and looked at me, and I saw the raw pain in her eyes. Then she shook her head and hurried to the parking lot.I froze for a moment, then ran towards her.“I can explain,” I hurried down the stairs to catch up with her, but she was already in her car. He

  • TOO LATE TO WANT ME BACK, MR CEO   CHAPTER 46

AuroraFor the first time since this night began, I was beginning to think that showing up here was a big mistake.I glanced at the entrance, then looked at Damien. He looked uncomfortable, but his face wasn’t convincing.“What's up about her?” I asked him again. He looked down, hesitating. “Aurora, we shouldn’t talk about it.”“Everyone, I want you to listen,” Genevieve’s voice boomed in the room. Warily, I approached the balcony exit, descending to the hall where everyone had gathered around Genevieve. She turned around, seeing me descending the stairs, and for a moment, I thought her smirk widened. No, I didn’t think. It actually happened, her eyes sparkling with mischief.“Listen, everyone,” Genevieve turned, backing me. “You all may have been invited here to celebrate life, but what you don’t know is that we are here to celebrate love, too.”I blinked, stopping just a tread away from the floor. What was she talking about? She continued speaking with a flourish.“I’m sure you al

  • TOO LATE TO WANT ME BACK, MR CEO   CHAPTER 45

DamienI hadn’t taken Genevieve’s request to want me back seriously, until I saw how she glared at me across the dance floor. If eyes could kill, I would have dropped dead in Aurora’s arms. When I noticed, I fed the anger, engaging with Aurora more as the dance progessed.“You’re enjoying the dance way too much,” I said. “So much for someone who doesn’t do dance.”“You are making me enjoy it,” she frowned, but a smile betrayed it.“See,” I smirked. “I know that lie when I see it.”The music slowed and then dropped before switching.Aurora gave me a look, then pulled back. “I said one dance.“It wouldn’t hurt to have one more dance,” I frowned. She shook her head. “I’m going to get some fresh air. You know where to find me if you need me.”I frowned as she left.I watched her ascend the stairs and disappear through the entrance to the balcony.“Hey,” I heard a familiar voice and I turned. Leila was grinning at me.“Hey, “ I failed to stop a smile from breaking through my face.“You see

  • TOO LATE TO WANT ME BACK, MR CEO   CHAPTER 44

AuroraIt was when I stepped down from the car that I realized that money had a smell. The entire venue glowed with thousands of lights, and all manner of luxury lights known to man lined the entrance.Nothing from all the experience I’d acquired around wealth for the last five years prepared me for what I saw today.Thousands of camera flashes met me as I stepped out of the car, from photographers and paparazzi that crowded the red carpet.“Ms. Harrington!”“Aurora, over here.”“Look this way!”Newsmen and paparazzi hurried towards me. For a moment, I got scared before I noticed men in black suits over a black shirt and ties that shimmered like fish scales in the evening light.I drew in a breath I didn’t realize I needed, rolling my eyes.I walked up the several stairs draped in red rug to the entrance. At the top of the stairs, Damien was waiting for me with a small smile and a glass of champagne, standing tall and looking way too confident.Looking way too pleased with himself.

  • TOO LATE TO WANT ME BACK, MR CEO   CHAPTER 43

DamienThe next couple of weeks have been amazing. I was getting to know my son better.Genevieve seemed to be silent. Work has been going smoothly, and Leila was genuinely happy with my current progress. But none of that beats visiting Theo. Visiting him was clearly the best part of my week, and honestly, it was a little embarrassing. For a billionaire who owned multiple companies and assets, both acquired and inherited, involved in billion-dollar deals twice every week, my entire weekend revolved around getting a five-year-old to let me play dinosaurs with him.“You’re cheating,” the young boy accused.“I’m not,” I argued, pointing at the board. “Look, that was a strategic placement. I did nothing wrong.”The boy looked at me, then looked at the board, and a small frown took over his face.“You moved the dinosaur,” he cried.“That, Theo, is called strategical repositioning,” I smiled.Theo stared, then broke into a grin, pointing at the board. “I learnt that from television.” “I ca

  • TOO LATE TO WANT ME BACK, MR CEO   CHAPTER 42

AuroraI suddenly realized how exhausting being a CEO can be. Suddenly, I was looking forward to having someone else handle the position.I didn’t know if the few weeks without being CEO wiped my memory of the mountain of paperwork that needed to be reviewed. The endless meeting I had to preside over, or just show up because I was in charge. The budget reviews I had to look at to ensure the company didn’t go under. The investor updates I had to prepare every day to keep the investors in the loop. And above all, the impossible KPI deadlines I must meet every month, according to the bylaws.Everyone all congratulated me and welcomed me back, but they were not telling the truth. Parrice looked particularly happy to be relieved of that stress. No wonder she was quick to pack her things out of my office. The young woman, who had recently gotten engaged to a Junior software developer at Google, had somehow convinced me to join her in every single meeting she was handling while she was gone

AuroraSitting up and peering at my morning coffee as if it were the cause of my life problems, I was halfway through it when a figure hurried towards the glass walls of my office and stumbled through the door.Patrice. Of course.I focused on the document on my screen, scrolling through reports.“

DamienThe silence in my office was suffocating.I sat behind my desk without turning on the lights. The city glittered beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows. New York was stretched out beneath me in gold and white streaks, but I barely saw any of it.My mind was still trapped in Aurora's office.Sti
