Chapter 54

Skylar's POV

"Who is that?"

He paused for two seconds. But two seconds is a long time when you are sitting in a hospital waiting room and the person on the other end of the phone is the person you have chosen to trust.

"It's a colleague." His voice was calm. It was in the same way he spoke to people in meetings when someone had asked a question he had already answered. "We're going over some numbers."

"A colleague right?”

"Yes." He answered.

I looked at the wall across from me. Clair

  • TOO LATE TO WANT ME    IF YOU'RE CURIOUS ABOUT ANYTHING, TELL ME

Chapter 55Skylar’s POVMy heart wouldn’t stop racing as I slipped upstairs. What if there was another woman? The thought twisted like a knife in my gut. I needed answers, and I needed them now, before the doubt consumed me completely.I pushed open the door to our bedroom, the familiar scent of his cologne and fresh linen wrapping around me. The room was dimly lit by the bedside lamps, casting long shadows across the king-sized bed and the sleek modern furniture. Zane was still in the shower. The water was still running steadily. This was my window. My pulse thundered in my ears as I moved quickly to his nightstand where his phone lay charging.I picked it up, the device felt suddenly heavy and warm in my trembling hands. My fingers hovered over the lock screen. I didn’t know his password. We had shared so much. Our bodies, secrets, futures…but something as simple as this felt like a wall between us. I tried the obvious first: his company initials, “CZ.” Wrong. Then the full name, “C

His voice was calm. It was in the same way he spoke to people in meetings when someone had asked a question he had already answered. "We're going over some numbers.""A colleague right?”"Yes." He answered.I looked at the wall across from me. Claire was sitting three chairs down, staring at her phone and a nurse walked through the lobby without looking at either of us."Are you sure?" I said."That's not a question sky" And there it was, the slight edge of patience that came when he felt he was being asked something he had already answered. "Yes. I'm sure. It's a colleague. I'm at work, same as I am every morning."I breathed. “Alright” He sounded sure. Well because there was nothing to explain. But I had no way of telling the difference

  • TOO LATE TO WANT ME    A WOMAN'S VOICE

Chapter 53Skylar's POVThe waiting room at St. Michael's was the particular kind of beige that hospitals chose for waiting rooms, as if the colour itself was supposed to communicate neutrality, maybe, or the suspense of everything that was happening on the other side of the doors. It did not communicate either of those things. It just looked like a room where people sat and waited and prayed that everything will be fine.I was doing all of those things at once.Claire had found me in the lobby. She was younger than I had imagined from her voice, like someone in her mid-twenties, dressed tidy, and she had clearly been crying, though she was not crying now. But I could see it on her face. She was just managing."They won't tell us anything yet," she said. "She's still in surgery. They said someone will come out when there's an update.""How long has she been in?""Since seven forty." Claire pressed her lips together. "She was found by another driver. They called the ambulance. She was

  • TOO LATE TO WANT ME    MARA HAS BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT

Chapter 52Skylar's POVThe morning of the fifteenth was perfect. It was just an ordinary good morning: clear sky, the city already moving by seven, Agnes in the studio kitchen at six forty-five setting out the breakfast spread with the quiet efficiency of someone who took her responsibilities seriously and expected others to do the same. The egg things with the herbs on top, exactly as promised. Fruit. Good coffee in two large pots.I had been at the studio since six.I had checked everything the night before and then come back in the morning to check it again, which I acknowledged was excessive and did anyway. The collection was racked in order. The shooting area was dressed in neutral backdrop, the lighting positioned where we had briefed it, the photographer already there when I arrived, walking the space with that unhurried assessment photographers did when they were getting serious about the light. His name was Dalton and he had been recommended to me by someone in the industry

  • TOO LATE TO WANT ME    THE FIFTEENTH OF NEXT MONTH

Chapter 51Skylar's POVI had forgotten what it felt like to want something badly enough to lose sleep over it.Not the anxious kind of lost sleep. I was not lying awake worrying whether Jason would show up somewhere or whether Zane was angry or whether Natalia was composing another post. This was different. This was the kind of lost sleep that came from having too many ideas and not enough hours, from waking at five in the morning because a hem detail had resolved itself in my subconscious and I needed to get it on paper before it disappeared. I had not felt this way about my work since before I left Jason's house. Before I left designing entirely. Before I became someone who ironed other people's suits and called that a life.It turned out that having your own brand, your own building, and a photoshoot with a deadline did wonders for the creative system.I had been at the studio by seven every morning for the past two weeks. My assistant, who was twenty-six and had the particular en

  • TOO LATE TO WANT ME    I WON'T WEAR ANYTHING WITH A BOW IN IT

Chapter 50Skylar's POV"You actually are?" Zane said."I actually am." I smiled at the counter. "I'll tell you everything when you get home.""Good. Go do something nice for yourself today."I thought about that for approximately three seconds after I put the phone down, and then I called Mara. She picked up on the first ring, which meant she had been near her phone, which meant she had been waiting to hear from me about something. Mara operated on a frequency that was always slightly ahead of the people around her. It was both impressive and occasionally alarming."I'm coming to Hot Dishes," I said."I'll tell them to get the VIP section ready," she said, and hung up.I laughed at my own phone. This was why I needed this woman in my life.I got dressed in something comfortable, nothing that required effort, because today was a day for happiness rather than presenting and I told Eric where we were going. He nodded in the way he always nodded, which showed both acknowledgement and th
