EMBER'S POV

The breakfast terrace has been transformed into a holiday explosion that looks like Santa's workshop threw up on a five-star resort.

Christmas decorations drip from every available surface—garlands wrapped around railings, oversized ornaments dangling from trees, some kind of artificial snow machine creating a gentle flurry that's already collecting in people's hair.

A cheerful activities coordinator bounces around with a clipboard, sorting guests into teams for what she keeps calling "fun holiday bonding exercises."

I want to murder her.

Knox's hand is at the small of my back as we navigate the crowd, but it feels different than this morning.

Possessive rather than affectionate. Strategic rather than wanting. Every part of him has shifted back into alpha mode, and I can feel the distance between us like a bitter taste in my mouth.

Though he hasn't cut me off completely—not like yesterday when he walked away and l

EMBER'S POVThe council antechamber is our impending guillotine.I'm still riding the high of Knox's public declaration on the terrace, still feeling the subtle warmth of his arm around my waist as he announced to half the Summit that I'm his fated mate.Well, it’s a lie. But it’s one that lights up my insides and releases a flutter of butterfly in my lower belly. The whispers haven't stopped since we left the Christmas games.People are looking at me differently now—with curiosity, with envy, with the kind of calculating interest that comes from realizing the nobody omega just became someone worth knowing. Then we walk into the antechamber, and my blood turns to ice.My mother is here. She's draped on the arm of a silver-haired man like she was born there, her designer dress catching the light, her amber eyes bright with the particular satisfaction of a chess player who's just cornered her opponent's king.

EMBER'S POV"Rafael—""I'm not asking you to choose right now." He steps closer. Close enough that I catch his warmth, his scent. "I'm telling you that when this ends, I'll be waiting." His eyes hold mine, intense and very alive. "Very patiently."My heart is slamming against my ribs.I should feel flattered. Or frightened. Or something other than this treacherous heat spreading through my chest. But I think of Knox. Of his hands on me this morning. Of the way he looked at me under the northern lights. Whatever we have—arrangement or not—I'm not ready to betray it.I look down at the rose in my hand. Then I hold it out to him."I can't accept this."Rafael doesn't take it. His eyes search my face."Ember—""I mean it." I press the rose against his chest until he has no choice but to take it back. "Whatever Knox and I are, arrangement, performance, countdown, the fact is that I'm with him. I chose hi

EMBER'S POV"That sounds like a terrible investment.""The best ones usually do.""And if I told him you bribed your way into this?""He'd probably challenge me to a duel. Very dramatic. Lots of growling." Rafael glances back at me, amused. "Would you like to watch? I hear modern women love that."I shouldn't smile. I definitely shouldn't smile. My lips twitch anyway."There it is." His voice softens. "You should do that more often.""Do what?""Stop holding your breath."The observation lands somewhere uncomfortable. I look away, focusing on the path, the fake snow, the ridiculous Christmas decorations everywhere. We walk in silence for a moment. He finds the icicle before I do, plucks it from a low branch, adds it to our basket. His movements are easy, unhurried. Like he has nowhere else to be."You're not what I expected," I admit."Let me guess. You expected more teeth

  • TRADING MY CHEATING HUSBAND FOR THE LYCAN KING   CHAPTER 43: FATED MATES AND FROZEN KINGS

EMBER'S POVNathaniel's jaw tightens. "If the council rules in Gale's favor, he has legal grounds to demand your return. Physically. The council can compel it—they have enforcement mechanisms that even Knox would have trouble circumventing, especially if it's a formal ruling. You'd be back in Shadowmoon Pack territory as Gale's legal mate, and there might be no room for divorce."My hands start to shake.Back to Gale. Back to that house that smells like expensive furniture and despair.Back to watching him leave in the middle of the night to meet Logan, back to feeling myself shrink smaller with each passing day until there's nothing left of me but a shell that knows how to smile on command."That's not happening." Knox's voice is brutal ice. "Run through their evidence. All of it."Nathaniel does. He outlines the charges, the testimonies they've gathered, the "documentation of instability" that Gale's team has somehow manufactured.Witness statements from pack members who barely knew

EMBER'S POVI pant down at him, triumphant. "Ha.""I let you do that.""Sure you did."His grin is slow and wicked. "Want to know why I let you do that?""Because you're a gentleman?""Because I like this view." His eyes drag down my body—the shirt riding up my thighs, my chest heaving, my hair a disaster around my face. "Definitely worth losing on purpose for.""You're such a liar." But I'm grinning too, and my heart is racing, and everything feels bright and alive in a way I've never experienced before. "Admit it. I bested you.""You bested me," he agrees solemnly. "The Lycan King, defeated by an omega in his own bed. The scandal.""I'll be merciful." I lean down and kiss him, soft and sweet, a contrast to all the playful violence. His hands settle on my waist, warm and possessive, and for a moment we just breathe together. Foreheads touching. Hearts beating in the same rhythm."Payback,"
