ASHLEY'S POV

I couldn't stop smiling like an idiot.

The stupid kind of smile that just sits on your face and refuses to leave even when you're trying to be cool about it. I tried. God, I tried to keep it casual. But the way Micheal looked at me last night, the way he spoke, the way he held me like I was something precious…that kind of thing does something to you.

And don't even get me started on the gifts.

The anklet still glitters on my ankle as I slipped into my flats, and I caught myself staring at it in the mirror more times than I'd care to admit.

Sophie would lose her mind when she hears about this. Jade, too. And Austin…well, Austin's hard to predict these days.

I called them earlier, and we agreed to meet at a brunch spot downtown—this cosy, tucked away café that had the best waffles and iced coffee. I was the last to arrive, mostly because I'd been staring at myself for ten minutes before finally walking out the door.

Sophie spotted me first. “Oh my God, there she is! The w

MICHEAL'S POV “Baby, please…just open the door and talk to me.”My knuckles were sore from knocking, but that wasn't what hurt. It was hearing her crying from the other side and not being able to do a damn thing about it.She hasn't said a word to me since we got back from the cemetery. Not one. She walked in, went straight to the bathroom and locked the door. I'd tried everything—knocking, waiting outside, leaving food at the door, sitting there just in case she changes her mind. But nothing worked.I leaned forward against the door, breathing in slowly, trying so hard not to lose it. I hated this. Watching her in pain and knowing damn well I couldn’t do anything to fix it. It gutted me.She hadn't eaten, she hadn't slept. She was just…crying.I sat on the floor with my back against the wall, staring at the ceiling like the answers might suddenly appear there. Then it hit me…Her friends—Sophie and Jade. She mentioned them a few times, I remember her talking about them the night we

  • TWISTED AFFAIR   CHAPTER 109

ASHLEY’S POV The silence at the cemetery was deafening, the kind that settled deep in your bones and refused to leave. I stood beside my dad, clutching a bouquet of white lilies in my hands, the breeze tugging slightly at my dress. Today marks another year since we lost her—my mother. And somehow, the ache hadn't dulled one bit.“She would've loved these,” I whispered, kneeling down to place the flowers gently at the base of her grave. The headstone was clean, polished, and simple…just like her. My fingers traced the letters engraved on the marble like I always did, as if memorising them would somehow bring her closer. My dad stood silently beside me, his hand stuffed into his pocket, his eyes red but focused straight ahead.“I miss you so much,” I said softly, my voice shaking. “So, so much. Some days, I still catch myself wanting to call you, to hear your voice…to hear your advice.” My voice cracked, and my hand started to tremble.“You'd know what to do right now…I feel so lost so

  • TWISTED AFFAIR   CHAPTER 108

MICHEAL'S POV The moment Ashley finally picked up my call, something shifted in me.It's not the usual panic or fear. Just pure rage.Simon Veltor. That bastard had the audacity to approach her in public? And to threaten her?.I stared at the wall in front of me, but my mind was replaying her voice, trembling and uncertain, trying to sound okay even though I knew she wasn't. Ashley could fake a lot of things, but not that. Not with me.I grabbed my keys off my desk and headed for the elevator, ignoring everyone who called out my name on the way down. Jayden was at a meeting, thank God. If he caught wind of this, it would be a war on too many fronts—and right now, I don't need that. I needed to focus. As I slid into the driver's seat and started the car, I opened the location tracker I had set for emergencies. A part of me hated using it, but another part was grateful for the foresight. The little blue dot flickered on screen, placing her a few blocks from the café she mentioned.I s

ASHLEY'S POV “Dad, you've barely touched your drink,” I said, glancing at the untouched cup of coffee in front of him. The quiet buzz of the cafe barely cut through the sudden thump in my chest.Jayden leaned back in his chair, eyes scanning the people walking past the glass window like he was miles away from here. He finally let out a breath. “I've had a lot on my mind lately.”Haven't we all?I sipped slowly from my cup, keeping my tone light. “Does it have to do with work? Or…Something else?”He blinked and focused on me. “Bits of both. You know how it is. Client's, staff…and now people from the past crawling out of nowhere.” His tone was laced with something…disgust? Annoyance?.“People from the past?” I asked gently, my heart thudding a little harder. “Like who?”He chuckled dryly. “Simon Veltor. Just someone Micheal ordered out of the company years ago.”My stomach dropped. I forced a laugh. “And now he's suddenly back? Did he say what he wanted?”Jayden nodded. “He reached o

MICHEAL'S POV She heard me.I knew it the second I went back into the bedroom. Ashley’s body was turned away from me, but her shoulders were too still. Her breathing was too even. She wasn't asleep. And I hated myself for letting her hear.It wasn't supposed to go this way. The plan—if you could call it that—was to deal with the threat quietly without bringing her into it. But now, everything was out. The worry in her voice this morning was still ringing in my ears.God, I could lie to a room full of investors, convince an entire boardroom to agree with me, but with her, I had nothing. No defence. One look into her eyes, and the truth unravelled faster than I could control it.Now she knows. She knew enough to be scared. I stood by the window of my office with my arms crossed and jaw locked tight. The city glittered beneath me. People down there were going about their lives like nothing was wrong.Like mine wasn't sitting on a line of thread. The knock on my office door pulled me ou

  • TWISTED AFFAIR   CHAPTER 105

ASHLEY'S POV The anniversary was over, but Micheal's mood had changed. He was still smiling, still charming, still the powerful man everyone knows. But I noticed the shift. The second that man in a Navy suit followed right after him earlier, Michael’s entire energy had changed the minute he came out. He went stiff, his jaw tightened, and for a second, I saw something I hadn't seen in him before…. Fear. When I walked up to him right after, he smiled at me like nothing happened, kissed my temple, and asked if I was okay. He even cracked a joke to lighten the mood. But I knew I knew something had rattled him.But I had no idea what it could be.After making sure my father had left, we went back to his penthouse just past ten. He poured us both glasses of wine but barely took a sip of his. He'd unbuttoned the top of his shirt, but he hadn't changed out of the rest of his formal wear. He just sat there on the edge of the couch, his eyes locked on the city skyline like it had answers.I
