Chapter 13

Kirk's POV

I pulled over to the side of the road, my hands still vibrating against the wheel. I reached for my phone and dialed the international number before I could talk myself out of it. It rang twice before she picked up.

“Kirk?” Lisa’s voice was clear, the background noise of Paris humming behind her. “I was gonna call you. How are you doing?”

“I’m good, nothing much” I said, staring out at the dark asphalt. “I’m interested…” my hands clenched.

  • TWO BROTHERS, ONE NIGHT: WHOSE HEIR?   Stacy means nothing to me

Chapter 22Arnold's Pov I stepped closer until there was barely any space between us, then rested my forehead against hers. My thumb gently brushed away a tear that had escaped down her cheek."Stacy means nothing to me, Lisa. She's nothing more than a vessel. A legal incubator for my child, that's all. You know who I love. You're the only woman I want in my life, in my bed, and in my future."Lisa's hands slowly found their way to my chest."Are you sure?" she asked quietly. "You promise you're not going to fall for her? That you're just using her?"I gave her a reassuring smile."I swear it on my life."I lowered my voice, making sure every word sounded convincing."Once everything settles down and I have total control of RealTech, I'll find a way to get her out of the picture. But until then, I need you to trust me, Lisa. You're my real partner. You've always been."The tension gradually left her shoulders. The anger in her eyes faded, replaced by that familiar mixture of vanity a

  • TWO BROTHERS, ONE NIGHT: WHOSE HEIR?   For our future

Chapter 21Arnold's PovMorning sunlight slipped through the motorized blinds of the master bedroom, casting sharp strips of light across the charcoal-colored sheets.I woke up feeling unusually good. Light, refreshed, and completely invincible.I stretched both arms above my head, enjoying the satisfying pops in my joints before rolling onto my side. Stacy was still curled up near the edge of the mattress, her back turned to me. She looked almost lifeless, like a broken porcelain doll someone had carelessly tossed aside. Her red hair was scattered across the pillows, and even in her sleep, there was something uneasy about her. Her breathing was shallow, occasionally breaking into an uneven rhythm.A smirk spread across my face.I leaned closer and dragged a finger mockingly down her bare shoulder. She immediately flinched, pulling away from my touch as though I had burned her."Good morning, wife," I murmured, amusement thick in my voice. She didn't respond. Not even a glance in my

Chapter 20Stacy's Pov And now I was standing in the very bedroom where it had all begun, staring at the same bed where I moaned, married to the same man who had broken me, with no clear way out.Tears began to gather in my eyes before I could stop them. They spilled over my lashes and rolled silently down my cheeks.I wrapped my arms around myself, holding on tightly as a shiver ran through my body. It felt as though I were standing outside in the middle of a snowstorm, despite the warmth of the room.I didn't know how long I stood there, lost in those memories, before I heard a knock. The bedroom door opened before I could even turn around or wipe my face.Arnold walked in.He had changed out of his suit and was now wearing a loose silk lounging shirt, the top three buttons left undone. His eyes immediately settled on me, taking in my red, swollen eyes and tear-streaked cheeks.A small, mocking smile appeared on his face."Still crying?" he asked. He walked towards the nightstand a

Chapter 19Stacy's Pov The judge's words didn't sound like a legal pronouncement. They felt more like a final blow, a gavel coming down on the coffin of the life I once knew."I now pronounce you husband and wife."That was it. It was done. There were no cheers, no applause, not even a hint of celebration. Just the sound of the court clerk gathering his papers and the occasional cough in the otherwise quiet room. Mr. and Mrs. Devon exchanged satisfied nods, their expressions almost identical, as though they had just watched a business deal go through exactly as planned.I stood there, barely able to process what had happened.I was married. The ink on the marriage certificate was still wet, but somehow, it felt as though my entire future had already been signed away. My freedom, my choices, my life as I knew it. All gone.By early afternoon, we had left the courthouse behind. I expected Arnold to take me back to the grand Devon family estate, but he rather took me directly to his mo

Chapter 18Stacy's PovI closed my eyes for a moment before reaching for the garment bag. With trembling hands, I unzipped it and pulled out the white dress. It was made of silk and lace, beautifully designed and perfectly fitted. Anyone who saw it would probably think it was a dream wedding dress. But to me, touching it felt like touching a block of ice.I slowly put my arms through the sleeves and pulled it over my body. Then I zipped it up and turned toward the cracked mirror on my dresser. The woman staring back at me barely looked like myself. My face was pale, my eyes were swollen and tired, and there was nothing but defeat in my expression.I looked like someone who had already lost everything. When I finally walked back into the living room, the man gave me a quick look from head to toe. He seemed satisfied with what he saw, because he simply nodded and pointed toward the door."Let's go."I followed him out of the apartment building and walked toward the curb.A black sedan w

Chapter 17Stacy's PovThe apartment was dark and quiet, almost like a tomb. After Kirk's taillights disappeared into the wet street outside, I didn't bother turning on any of the lights. I slowly made my way back to the living room and curled up on the couch, pulling a wool blanket over my head as if it could hide me from the world and silence the sound of my own breathing.Every time I closed my eyes, I could still feel his lips against mine. I could still remember the warmth of his touch and the faint smell of cedar and rain on his jacket.Paris.The word kept repeating in my head like a death sentence.By next week, Kirk would be thousands of miles away, breathing fresh air, building a new life, and trying to forget the mess I had dragged him into. And I would still be here.Trapped inside a beautiful marble cage in Sacramento, waking up every morning beside a man who hated me and carrying a child whose very existence had become a weapon against me.So many thoughts crossed my mi
