“Even if Silas hadn’t said a word, I would’ve known.”

Kade didn’t let it go despite orbiting the subject for the last fifteen minutes. He stood with one shoulder pressed against the glass sliders, sunlight tracing patterns across black tile.

“Didn’t think you’d actually get drunk for a girl.”

Raphael’s finger hovered, then clicked once on the trackpad.

He was sitting on the balcony, shirtless, exposing tattoos so intricate they looked like clothes sculpted onto his skin, ignoring how the wind bit hard. The silhouette of his broad frame stayed hunched in the pale cast of morning light that bled through the penthouse windows, a lit cigarette dangling between his left fingers.

Outside, Manhattan moved in slow-motion. Cars were the size of ants and the world felt too small beneath the altitude of his penthouse and its soundproof glass.

Kade gave him a look. “You showed up at Kendrick’s house at midnight. You, Rapha. With a bottle of Glenlivet you only ever touched to celebrate anniversar

  • TWO LIVES - Shattered Illusion    CHAPTER 44: 12,000 Reasons to run.

Two rows of men and women flanked both sides of the grand entrance, bowing as Rapha and Niya stepped into the building. She was still trying to control how weird she felt about the convoy outside. A whole circus act of cars and men in suits with comms tucked into their ears, it felt like something out of a movie. Apparently, this was just how Rapha moved. He hadn’t told her what that place was or why, and she hadn’t asked, not after what happened in the kitchen. Pushing him now felt like lighting a match near a leaking gas line.“Welcome, Mr. Fowler,” a host greeted, bowing before gliding aside. He didn’t respond, just turned to look at Niya. And she, like an idiot, was caught rubbernecking the place. It reminded her of the hotel she’d stayed at in Savannah, only grander. But what if it was a hotel? Was this supposed to be some kind of surprise? Why would he bring her to a hotel?Niya swallowed.“This way, please,” a server gestured.Rapha slid his fingers between hers and pulled her

  • TWO LIVES - Shattered Illusion    CHAPTER 43: Touch me like you hate me.

She looked... devastatingly gorgeous. Rosetta had given her a cozy white oversized, fluffy sweater, loose at the neck. It hung off one shoulder just enough to show a gleam of creamy skin that smelt of vanilla. Paired with black leggings and ankle boots, she looked like winter mornings in some designer ad.Her hair had dried into darker strands that curled slightly at the ends, framing her round face and clean cheeks like she’d been styled by accident. She hadn’t reapplied much makeup, just a clean face with fresh glossed rosy lips, lot of skin, and those tired but clear eyes. She was dazzling and her skin was glowing under the gold lighting, oblivious of his eyes while she eats messily and beautifully.Rapha Fowler didn’t interrupt her yet. He watched her chew with her brows pulled together like she was trying to ration the joy in each bite. His eyes sweep over her as a pinch bloomed in his chest. He hated feelings that didn’t obey him.He was used to getting what he wanted, but this

  • TWO LIVES - Shattered Illusion    CHAPTER 42: He wasn't hers. He was worse.

He looked ridiculously calm for someone who could ruin her life with just a look. His soaked gray shirt was half unbuttoned revealing the sharp line of his collarbone and his sexy tattoos. His chestnut hair was pushed back, stray pieces curling slightly around his temples. And his face looked tired yet utterly unreadable.“You don’t have to pretend with me, Angel.”He was so close that when she tried drawing in air, she swallowed his scent and her chest touched his.His eyes dropped to her lips, then her ruined lashes, then to her trembling mouth.Niya exhaled slowly, still pressed against the elevator wall. “I bet that line works on every woman you trap in steel boxes.”“Only the ones who fight it,” his blue eyes trailed her soaked silhouette. “Makes it more interesting.”“Interesting?” she echoed, heat rising in her throat. “I almost cracked my skull.”“But you didn’t.” He glanced at her creamy bare shoulder and almost ran a hand on it, but he was hesitant. “So what’s the issue?”He

  • TWO LIVES - Shattered Illusion    CHAPTER 41: Premonition.

She sighed outwardly from the cruel disappointment of reality that she wasn’t in Alex’s world anymore, not even in his contempt.Niya's heart ached deeply, and it wasn't because Pony had reluctantly swapped the glittering dress for a quick buck or because her hair and makeup that she’d spent hours perfecting were now ruined. That wasn’t why her chest hurt like this. For a moment, Niya believed she'd woken up from her unending dream and back to being Alex's fake wife. And somehow, even his cold disdain had felt less torturous than this emptiness. She didn’t know if it was another memory, but it felt real and familiar like she’d seen this pool before and Alex had risen from it, once. She strongly had the moment of dejavu.Or maybe it was her mind playing tricks in her. Ever since that last night with him, she'd started sensing him like some kind of premonition. He’d been appearing in her life in eerie synchronicity across the street from her job, in her dreams as though he'd been waitin

Niya snorted softly at how much Pony's been blowing up her phone since she left. She pinned her location before tucking her phone away, her headache still throbbing behind her eyes, although the cool floor beneath her feet helped a little. She stepped forward until the glass walls pulled back, revealing the most gigantic pool she'd ever seen in her life. It sprawled beneath the sun in a long and angular form, lined with slate-grey tiles that made the water shimmer a mysterious green when the light touched it. Niya thought if she had something like this, she might never even need to swim, the view alone would be enough. No one gave her clear directions, but someone had mentioned the pool and that was enough. She followed the faint sound of lapping water, passing abstract paintings she didn’t recognize but were probably worth more than her life. Through a hallway of warm shadows and cool stone, she found a sliding door and slipped out into blinding sunlight. But there was no one.The

Niya glanced out the tinted windows and blew air through her nose. Her phone buzzed, the screen lit with the message she’d sent to Rapha nearly an hour ago:~ ‘If your plan was to piss me off by making me take a day off at my new jobs just to rot in traffic, congrats. It’s working.’She’d read it an unhealthy amount of times that it made her feel sick about it. Meanwhile, the car rolled on in silence.Silas hadn’t said a single word or even a glance in her direction since she got into the car. Not even when she sighed for the hundredth time, or when she snapped her seatbelt with more force than necessary. He still didn’t even look at her. The man might as well have been a mannequin with batteries.“You know, you could at least pretend I’m not being kidnapped,” she huffed. It fell on deaf ears. He was completely unbothered by her presence.“Cool,” she muttered, staring at the back of his head like she could set it on fire. “We’ve been on the road for hours. I missed a whole shift for
