Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
I stayed silent for far too long, so my third brother, Nathan, wrapped his arms around me in a panic. Ryan came up, pressing his hand to my forehead. "Carol, are you running a fever? Why aren't you saying anything?"

"You look pale… and there's blood on your lips. Did you bite them because you couldn't stand the pain in your leg?"

They knew about the pain, the pain that had me chewing my lips to pieces.

"Carol, oh Carol," they sobbed, "this is all our fault. We wish we were the ones hurt."

"I'm so useless. If only I could give you my leg..." James lamented.

"I should have taken better care of Carol. I deserve the worst!" Ryan cried.

They were a mess of tears, slapping their own faces until they were streaked pink.

I did not get it.

They claimed to care, but the moment they turned their backs, they became strangers.

I remembered being so hungry I stole a cake and got a beating for it. My brothers threw themselves over me, begging for them to stop.

They took the hits until they bled. They never abandoned me.

Back home, they never said a harsh word.

Yet those same brothers, who supposedly loved me, had lied to me my whole life. They watched me struggle while they scrimped and saved on my behalf.

Jasmine? They treated her like a princess, without a single care in the world.

The pain in my legs worsened, and I could not stop myself from digging into the flesh with my hands.

Their worried faces flashed before me, asking what was wrong.

I swallowed the taste of blood and managed a weak smile.

"It's nothing. I just had a dream where a princess-like girl was celebrating her birthday. Her brothers brought in a whole orchestra to play for her. She had the tallest cake, and a dress prettier than any I've ever seen. They even gave her the black card just like that.

"The New Year's celebration was just a distant echo for me, alone in my rented room, surrounded by a sea of discarded items. "

I caught the flicker of guilt in my brothers' eyes as they exchanged uneasy glances.

They started their well-rehearsed charade.

James had tears streaming down his face, bent before me. "Carol, we've let you down. We worked overtime to pay for your leg treatment, but we had to leave you here after the surgery. We couldn't be by your side."

Ryan gently patted my head as his eyes brimmed with tears. "Carol, we may not have much, but we've given it our all. We want to give you the best. Dreams can't measure up to the love we have for you."

"Come on, the frosting's melting. Eat up," urged Nathan, pushing the cake towards me.

However, the sweetness on my tongue turned bitter, like sugar-coated poison. I barely managed a bite before setting it aside.

"Carol, why did you stop eating? You need sugar to recover from the blood loss after your surgery."

The irony was not lost on me. Jasmine had her orchestra, why didn't I have a medical team?

My fingernails pressed into my palm, I steadied myself before speaking. "I need to be in a hospital."

My leg had not stopped bleeding since the operation. Pus started seeping through the dressings. I had kept silent, bearing the pain, not wanting to burden my brothers.

I had even scavenged for scraps, hoping to trade them for a chance at proper medical care.

"Why the hospital? You seem fine. We're still scraping together funds for your last surgery," they said, their eyes avoiding mine. All of them had a mix of concern and reproach in their gaze.

My heart turned heavy, and I could feel a tremor running through my entire body.

Jasmine's tiara was worth a small fortune, yet all I asked for was a simple 150 dollars bandage treatment to save my own skin.

James gave the others a knowing look and said to me in a soothing tone, "Hey Carol, how about we go get you some bandages tonight?"

"Yeah, bandages are way safer than the agony of surgery. We'll give you a piggyback ride and even get you some painkillers. You won't feel a thing," chimed Ryan.

Nathan gave me a reassuring pat.

I squeezed my hand to steady myself and gave them a nod. I did not want to suffer, and the meds would give me some relief. Plus, the bandages would help keep it clean and in place.

My brothers had just started to unwind when their phones erupted with the same catchy tune, "Baby Jasmine's brothers! Baby Jasmine's brothers!"

That distinctive female voice sent them scrambling for their phones, which they quickly silenced before exchanging worried looks.

"Carol, we just got a call from the site. They need us to pull an all-nighter mixing cement," James lied.

"Right, right, we all got the call. Looks like it's pretty urgent," Ryan added.

"Carol, you'll have to tough it out tonight. You've done it before, and one more day won't kill you. Just don't go wandering off on your own, okay? It's too risky with your leg," Nathan warned.

They did not even wait for my reply before they left, leaving nothing but their retreating shadows.

Staring down at my legs, I whispered to myself, "Is it true…"

Clutching onto hope, I began the arduous task of dragging myself forward with my arms.

Following the address on the summons, the brothers arrived at the lawyer's office. The moment they saw Lawyer Wilson, they all lowered their heads in respect.James pleaded, "Mr. Graham, please, you have to tell us where our sister is. She's all we have left of our parents."Ryan chimed in, "Mr. Graham, you've known us since we were kids. Our sister is the last piece of our parents we have. Just let us know where she is. We'll do anything.""Mr. Graham, please tell Carol that I was wrong. I deserve the worst, but if she's willing to come back, we'll give her anything she wants!"Wilson's brows knitted together as he let out a cold huff. "You're offering scraps nobody wants. Only now you're feeling regret? Her misery is your doing. Just go back. She'd be sick just looking at you. And her name is Rose, not Caroline. At the trial, bring back what you took. It's the least you owe her."There I was, in the institute, going through my last blood transfusion. I looked like death — pale a

"It wasn't me! She brought it on herself. She must've played the victim to make you think it's my fault. Please, don't believe her," Jasmine pleaded, tears streaming down her face, her voice a mix of hurt and helplessness. However, instead of comfort, James's voice boomed with fury. "Do you have any idea what you did? Her legs were badly hurt that night, and when she fell, we had to rush off for an emergency at the company. We trusted you to take her to the hospital, something we never take lightly. What did you do? You left her alone on the streets?! It's your fault she's lost all hope!"Jasmine's eyes widened, a mix of shock and defiance. "She's just a burden. Seeing her hurt you made me sad every time. Why keep her around? If she wants to die, why should we stop her? It'd be easier if that stray dog took care of her body!""You!" Ryan's eyes were sharp as he slapped her hard across the face. She hit the ground with a thud, hand to her cheek, glaring up at them. "Did you just hit

Before I left for good, I went back to that rental stay, filled with nothing but trash.Surprisingly, the landlord had not tossed everything out. I burned all the stuff that belonged to my brothers and me, except for one thing — a document that cut all ties with them. Some people treated others like disposable weeds, some treasured them like precious flowers. To them, I was an annoying weed. Now, I was off to tend to a flower of my own, a flower named Rose.A week later, the door that was barely hanging on gave way with a gentle knock, and the breeze that followed sent the document fluttering to the floor."Carol? Are you still mad? I should've told you sooner, the movie theater is owned by our boss and Jasmine is his daughter. We were just there to work as security," James confessed."Check this out, I got you movie tickets! You can finally say you've been to the movies!" Nathan added with a grin."I didn't mean to kick you, dearest sister. If the boss's daughter was unhappy, we

As Wilson unearthed more proof for me to get back my inheritance, the time to act was now.I could not shake off that nagging feeling — I had to see for myself why Jasmine was so special that my own brothers would favor her.I found myself at the villa Wilson had tracked down, nestled in a garden blooming with jasmine, screaming grandeur like something out of a fairy tale.Jasmine stood in the glass conservatory, cradling a bouquet. Her hair and gown flowed in the breeze. She was the definition of elegance. There I was, my hair chopped short for work, wearing tattered clothes that screamed poverty — a stark contrast to her fairy-tale existence. The bodyguard at the villa saw me as just another beggar on the street, shoving me away with a rough push. My crutches snapped beneath his boot. "Get lost, you filthy beggar. Don't let your stench ruin the precious flowers!"Do you have any idea how much work she put into growing these Jasmines? You'd never be able to pay for the damage ev

"...the cleaner you've been asking for.""You?!" Nathan looked like he had seen a bug, and Ryan backed away like he had seen a ghost.James turned around, ready to lay a word in, "You two better not be-" He clammed up, not another peep.He had that panicked look, then tried to fake some concern. "Carol, shouldn't you be back at your place resting? You're injured and yet here you are, running around."I forced a bitter smile, locking eyes with Jasmine who was hiding behind my brothers, silently judging me as a cripple. "If I didn't get out, how else would I catch you all fawning over her?"The slap echoed sharply, a sudden sting across my cheek.Ryan glared at me, his voice heavy with contempt. "Why are you speaking like that? Have we been too soft on you?"Nathan's kick landed hard against my chest. "Get out of the way! Jasmine's getting scared by your freakish looks!"James's voice carried a chilling warning. "Spout off again, and you'll wish you were dead."Their relentless

I had no idea how I ended up on the street. Why didn't anyone pick up my calls? My hands shook as I struggled to find that one photo on my cracked, old phone."Carol, you're incredible, earning enough to buy your own phone and even taking a photo with us. You're definitely the toughest one of us all!"That was the only picture I had with my brothers.I cherished that phone like a treasure, never replacing it even though smartphones were everywhere these days.In the end, what good did it do? It was just one photo with them, while they had countless with Jasmine...They were all fakes! The screen, already splintered, was beyond repair after I tossed it in frustration, much like the bond I once shared with them.I had sacrificed so much for them, dropped out of St. Albion University to ease their load, worked myself to the bone with three jobs a day until I was sick, I even missed my chance to move up and out to a thriving city, all because I skimmed on my injury trying to save
