I couldn't help but think that Gerald was keeping something secret from me. It was no longer just a fleeting notion but had been eating at me ever since I had learned of it the other day.

He'd been discussing it with Landen, and although Gerald's voice had held its characteristic smooth assurance, Landen's had broken on fear. He'd claimed he was too scared of how my father would react. That had bothered me. And it bothered me more than I cared to acknowledge.

As long as Gerald had secrets, you know, something about my father, then I was not just going to sit back and act as if all was well.
