Chapter 2

Author: Bright Light
Stella was the heiress to the Wallace family. She had been raised under strict rules since she was little. She was skilled at everything from playing the piano to calligraphy and painting.

In everyone’s eyes, she was the perfect young lady from a prestigious family.

Only Stella knew how suffocating that rigid life was.

There was a time set for everything. She had to wake up at a certain hour, practice the piano at a certain hour, and study at a certain hour. Even the exact angle of her smile had been decided for her.

She was like a piece of art that someone had carefully crafted. She was beautiful and flawless, but she had no soul of her own.

Then, Julian came into her life.

He was South City’s most notorious playboy. He was good at everything from street racing and fighting to extreme sports.

He lived however he wanted. He was bold, reckless, and completely free, like a gust of wind that no one could hold back.

The first time she saw him was at a gathering of their two families.

He was an hour late. He came roaring in on a motorcycle. When he took off his helmet, his hair was a complete mess from the wind, but his face was still unbelievably handsome.

He flashed everyone a grin and said, “Traffic was terrible.”

Then, he sat down without a care in the world. He glanced at her with his striking, flirtatious eyes and lifted his chin at her.

That night, Stella could not sleep.

She had never met anyone like him. Every part of him seemed to cry out for freedom. She, on the other hand, was trapped inside a beautiful cage. She could not even spread her wings.

The day she found out that their families had arranged a marriage between them years ago, she was so happy that she could not sleep at all.

But she had never expected Julian to hate her.

He had hated her from the moment they first met.

He called her fake and boring. He said she was dull and lifeless.

Later, he fell in love with Yara, a young woman who went to school on a scholarship for students from low-income families. The way he looked at her was so gentle that it seemed as if his gaze could melt.

He tried every possible way to call off the engagement, but none of them worked. In the end, he simply gave up. He kept the title of her fiance, but he kept putting off their wedding.

Anything she did not want him to do, he only did more of.

He took Yara out in public and flaunted their relationship. This completely humiliated Stella, his fiancee.

She had no choice but to follow him around every day. All the while, she tried to keep him in line and stop him from doing reckless things. Because of it, she had become the annoying shadow that was always at his heels.

But she thought he would eventually see how much she cared about him. Perhaps one day, he would realize that she was not boring, but she simply did not know how to express herself.

She waited year after year. By the time her heart had gone completely cold, he still had not looked back at her even once.

Everything changed a week ago.

Her parents called her into their room and told her the truth that would change her life forever.

She was not the Wallace family’s real daughter. The hospital had switched the babies by mistake all those years ago. The Wallace family’s real daughter was someone else.

Her parents had complicated looks on their faces. They looked guilty and troubled, but more than anything, they looked relieved.

“Stella, we know this is hard for you to accept.” Liam Wallace’s voice was low. “But Yvonne has suffered a lot out there. We want to make it up to her. She’ll be coming home at the end of the month. We hope you can… leave by then.”

Stella was silent. Then, she asked, “What about the engagement with the Quinn family?”

Natalie Smith glanced at her before turning away.

“The engagement was between our two families. Now that we know the babies were switched, the engagement… naturally is for our real daughter. We want you to leave and cut all contact with Julian.

“The wedding between the two families will take place as soon as possible. When it does, you’re not to attend.”

At that moment, Stella felt something inside her shatter completely.

She said nothing. She simply nodded and accepted it.

All these years, she had tried everything she could to make Julian fall for her, but she had failed. She was exhausted.

She had spent all these years trying to be the perfect young lady from a prestigious family. She was tired of that too.

If none of it had ever truly belonged to her, then she wanted none of it anymore.

The only thing she wanted was the lucky charm her grandmother had given her before she died.

It was the last thing in this world that truly belonged to her.

Stella’s vision grew increasingly blurry. The sound of an ambulance grew louder in the distance.

Stella finally closed her eyes.

Stella froze. Tears clung to her lashes and trembled there.Julian let go of her and took a step back. He pulled the ring from his pocket. The gemstone was a brilliant green. A few faint scratches covered its surface from when he had thrown it.“Here. Take it back.” He held out his hand. The ring rested in his palm. “If you don’t want something, I won’t keep it. But if you don’t want me anymore…”He looked at her. His expression was firm and determined, as if he had just made a very important decision.“Then, I have nothing left to live for.”Stella’s eyes widened, and her face went deathly pale. “What do you mean?”Julian said nothing. He turned and walked away. His steps were long and heavy. His dress shoes struck the concrete floor of the hallway with a steady thud. Every step felt like a blow to her heart.Stella stood in the doorway and watched his back disappear at the end of the hall. A terrible feeling suddenly swept over her. It felt as if something had finally snapped

Julian hung up. His face was dark with anger. His fingers tightened around the phone until the case almost bent.He called his lawyer. His voice was cold and firm. “I want to sue Yara for intentional assault, defamation, and false accusations. I want to press every charge we can.”“Do we have enough evidence?”“Yes.” Julian’s voice came through gritted teeth. “If we don’t, I’ll make sure we do.”After he dealt with Yara’s case, he went back to the inn.It was already dark. The streetlights were on. Their dull orange glow fell across the steps and over him. His shadow stretched long behind him.He knocked on Room 301.“Why are you here again?” Stella’s voice came from inside. She sounded tired, as if she had just woken up.“I’m hungry,” Julian said. His voice was hoarse. “You used to love cooking for me. Could you make me something one more time?”There was only silence. It lasted so long that he thought she would not answer.“I’m not cooking for you anymore.” Her voice was so

Julian sat outside the inn all afternoon. He did not leave. He sat on the steps. His suit jacket was draped over his knees, and his shirt sleeves were rolled up to his elbows. His skin was swollen with several mosquito bites, but he did not even scratch them.He called Colin. His voice was hoarse. “Look into Yara.”“Look into what?”“Everything she’s done over the years, especially anything that has to do with Stella.”Colin was silent for a moment. Julian could hear the sound of his keyboard through the phone. “You finally figured it out?”“Stop talking and get it done.”An hour later, Colin sent him a file. It was more than a dozen pages long. It contained screenshots, audio recordings, bank transfer records, and pages of detailed information.Julian opened it. The more he read, the darker his expression became. What Yara had done over the years went far beyond the kidnapping and the false accusations. She had paid someone to tamper with Stella’s car. Someone had cut the br

The owner curled her lip and spat out another sunflower seed shell. “She never said she had a fiance. She only said she was alone and has no family.”Julian felt a dull ache in his chest. It was not a sharp pain. It was a deep, heavy ache that came again and again, like a dull knife cutting into him.He said nothing and went straight upstairs to the third floor, two steps at a time.He stopped in front of Room 301 and took a deep breath. His fingers curled slightly. Then, he knocked. The door opened.Stella stood in the doorway. She wore a faded T-shirt with a loose collar. Her hair was tied back casually, and a few loose strands fell around her face. Her face was still pale. Her lips were dry and cracked. The bandage around her wrist was still there. It was wrapped around her wrist several times. It had gotten a little dirty, and the edges were frayed. When she saw him, her expression did not change. There was no surprise, anger, or sadness in her eyes. She was simply calm.

Julian froze. Tears clung to his eyes, but they did not fall.“Think about it.” Colin looked him straight in the eyes and spoke slowly.“You said she was boring. But when she practiced the piano until her fingers were covered in calluses, didn’t you secretly watch her? “You claimed that she’s uptight, but some part of you enjoyed it when she told you to do something, right?“Then, there’s all the talk about you hating her, yet you never really pushed her away when she chased after you for seven years. Did you ever really push her away?”Julian opened his mouth, but he could not say a word. His throat felt as if something was stuck in it.“You paraded Yara around and kissed her right in front of Stella. Don’t you think that was cruel and childish?”Colin’s voice was quiet, but every word hit Julian like a hammer. “You don’t love Yara. You were trying to make Stella angry. You wanted to make her jealous and chase after you because you wanted all her attention on you.”“Shut

Julian shook his head. His voice was hoarse, as if smoke had burned his throat. “No. She vanished without a trace.”Colin was silent for a while. He leaned against the car door beside Julian. Neither of them said a word. The only sound was the river nearby. The water flowed steadily and quietly.“Julian, there’s something I need to tell you.” Colin suddenly said. His voice was calm, but his words carried a weight that Julian could not ignore.“What?”“Do you remember the night Luna died? Stella fell from the second floor.”Julian frowned. The cigarette was still between his fingers. Another bit of ash fell from the tip. “Why are you bringing that up?”“I looked into it.” Colin turned to him. His expression was serious. The streetlight illuminated one side of his face and left the other in shadow. “Stella didn’t poison Luna. It was one of the servants. She was worried you’d blame her for not taking good care of Luna, so she purposely said Stella had let Luna go. She was the one
