Sebastian’s breathing settled into a slow, steady rhythm.

Shania frowned.

"Sebastian?"

She waited.

No response.

"Sebastian?"

Rising from her chair, she crossed the room and stopped beside the chaise longue.

She examined him carefully.

He didn’t appear distressed. His breathing was even, his body completely relaxed. The peaceful smile that had lingered on his face moments earlier had vanished, replaced by an unreadable calm.

Shania reached out and held a finger beneath his nose.

A second later,

Rosie closed the bedroom door carefully behind her.The moment she was safely outside, her cheeks grew even hotter.AAAAAAH!She screamed internally, pressing both hands to her burning face. What on earth did I just do?She had teased Sebastian. She had flirted with him. She had allowed herself to indulge in a side of her personality she had never dared acknowledge before. What if he sees me differently now?Perhaps he thought she was shameless.Perhaps he thought she was some sort of—Rosie stopped herself."No. Stop it."She shook her head firmly."I was only trying to help him. That's all."That was perfectly reasonable.Mostly.She had simply... followed the sort of scenario she'd once read in a romance story online. At least, that was what she told herself.Although I did come up with some of it myself...Rosie immediately stopped that thought before it could go any further."Nope."She hurried towards the kitchen.I need something to do before my imagination gets completely out

What makes him like this, though? Rosie wondered as she waited for Sebastian to fall asleep. He had suddenly returned home in the middle of the night. She had assumed he would spend the evening with his new girlfriend. Perhaps they had a row? she thought. It was certainly possible. Sebastian had always been hot-headed, and it wouldn't take much to push him over the edge. Perhaps the woman had said something that had upset him.Rosie found herself wondering what sort of woman could maintain a relationship with Sebastian. He had an obvious temper that could flare over the smallest things. He was impatient, stubborn and, if she were being completely honest, rather spoiled.Sebastian is basically a grown-up brat. I wonder who could possibly put up with him.A faint smile tugged at her lips.Well... there is me. I'm quite sure I can handle him.But that was different. She had known him since he was a child. She understood his moods, his habits and all the little things that made him diffic

“Hii—!” Rosie gave a startled shriek when two large, warm hands suddenly settled on her shoulders.“Get on the bed, Rosie. I’m going to brush my teeth first,” Sebastian said.He gave a cheerful little whistle as he disappeared into the bathroom, leaving Rosie sitting nervously on the edge of the bed.Sebastian is being so strange tonight.Usually, he would simply ask Rosie to prepare dinner if she hadn’t already done so, eat in silence, and retreat to his room. Sometimes he would eat whatever she had prepared, even if it had gone cold, without saying a word about it the following morning. But tonight had been completely different. He had called her to him, wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her into his embrace. At first, Rosie had assumed he was in the mood for that.Yet he hadn’t.Instead, he had asked to kiss her. Then he’d kissed her gently before looking at her with a gaze she had never seen from him before.A gaze that seemed almost unbearably tender.A gaze that belonge

When Sebastian emerged from his bedroom, wearing nothing but his boxer shorts, he found Rosie already setting the chicken noodle soup on the table.“Sebastian, eat it while it’s still warm,” she said, placing the medication beside the bowl. “And here’s the cold medicine and paracetamol for your fever. Don’t forget to rest afterwards, all right?”“I’ll go downstairs. Good night—”“Stay here, Big Sis…”Rosie paused.“Eh? Why? Do you need something else?”Sebastian pouted. If he were being honest with himself, he simply wanted all the attention Rosie had given him when he was ill. It reminded him of being a child—the days when her presence alone had been enough to make everything feel better.Rosie sighed when she realised he was in the mood to be spoiled. She had heard that grown men could become particularly clingy when they were ill, so perhaps this was simply Sebastian’s way of asking her to stay with him for the rest of the night. But isn’t that usually a wife’s job—or at least a gi

Sebastian realised that Rosie hadn't taken his compliment seriously. That, more than anything, made him want to prove it to her.He meant every word.To Sebastian, Rosie genuinely was the most beautiful woman in the world. He had met countless women throughout his life, women who were younger, wealthier and perhaps considered more conventionally beautiful.None of them had ever come close to Rosie. Not once.Even after ten years, even now that she was thirty-five, she still occupied that singular place in his heart. And that settled it.He was in love with her.Or at least, he believed he was. Then Shania's words came back to him.“I think your ‘Big Sis Rosie’ is a groomer who manipulated you into falling in love with her when you were a child. That's why you're hopelessly in love with her now. Everything is part of her manipulation tactic because she's a paedophile.”Sebastian's jaw tightened. He hated the way Shania had judged Rosie without knowing her. How dare she reduce the woman

Sebastian drove straight to his apartment and hurried up to the penthouse on the top floor. He felt restless, almost desperate to see Big Sis Rosie again. He needed to know whether Shania's words had planted a genuine doubt in his mind—or whether his feelings for Rosie were exactly what he'd always believed them to be.He unlocked the door with his fingerprint and pushed it open.“Rosie!”His voice echoed through the now spotless but strangely empty penthouse.Sebastian checked the time.Half past ten.“Damn…” he muttered. “Has she gone to bed already? It’s not even that late.”He walked into the kitchen, only to find the dining table empty.Of course there was no dinner waiting. He was the one who had told Rosie he would eat out, so she had no reason to prepare anything for him.And yet, somehow, he still felt rather put out by it.The absence of Rosie—and the absence of her dinner—had managed to sour his mood completely.Usually, he would come home to find her sitting on the sofa, w

Her fingers trembled as she dialled his number. He picked up almost immediately.“Yes?”“Where is my daughter?” Rosie demanded.A soft chuckle. “You mean our daughter?”Her jaw tightened. “Don’t play games with me, Charles.”“She’s fine,” he said casually. “We’re at the toy store. She’s picking wha

Rosie sat at the dining table, the candlelight flickering softly against untouched plates. He had promised their daughter he would return before

Rosie scarcely realised she had begun to run until the corridor stretched before her like something endless, her heels striking sharply against the marble as though urging her forward. Rosie reacted at once, catching hold of her daughter’s arm and gently but firmly pulling her aside.“I’m so sorry, Sebastian,” she said quickly. “P–Please don’t be upset with Izzie. She’s only a child, I—”“Tch. It’s fine,” he cut in, dismissive. “Just make me the same smoothie. And from now on, yo
