ChiaraIf I could not crush him, I'd find ways to please him into calling off the wedding. Something extremely valuable for his business. He was a greedy man after all. And I happened to know how to deal with them.
I'd received a potential intel from Xander, and it was too risky if caught. But then again, danger was introduced into my life years ago, and I wasn't born yesterday.
"What is the most challenging thing in your business currently?" I held the phone up again, my finger just a press away. If he dared to move, I was going to blow his office up. He silently thought it over before facing me, "Clean transportation? Why are you asking?" I let out a breath. "What if I tell you, I can help you get something that would ensure clean and undetected transportation across any port and airport that you want?"
His frown deepened as he tilted his head up. "And why would you do that?"
"Call off the wedding in return. Tell Antonio you have changed your mind." I stated.
A torturous silence passed. He then threw his head back laughing at me. My grip tightened around the phone, eyes not leaving his hideous face. "God, Chiara. You never cease to amaze me." He leaned back on his chair, sitting as though he owned the entire world. "Bring the package first, then we'll talk further." I stood up, gave him a nod, and walked out of the room.
Back to present.....
So here I was, attempting to free myself from Enzo even if it meant risking my life. Marco and Xander were waiting outside. I followed their instructions through an earpiece, carefully avoiding the motion detectors or the patrolling guards on the corridors.
"Room number 302," said Xander after a short silence. I took out the stolen keycard of a high-ranking officer and pressed it on the biometric scanner. The door beeped, and I hurriedly got in before it automatically shut. Once inside, I let out a deep breath, looking around. The room was lined with rows of high-tech servers and secure cabinets. It almost made my head ache. There were too many cabinets.
"You have only 40 minutes before the guards make a turn." Said Xander.
A familiar hiss followed, "You didn't have to get her even more nervous." Marco uttered.
"She had to know the stakes," Xander replied. "No, she didn't!" Marco refuted.
"Shut the fuck up! I'm killing both of you fools once I'm out of here." I scream in silent frustration. They both went dead silent. Good.
The hard drive was inside a temperature-controlled vault. I still needed to go for the decryption tool on the fifth floor before the alarm was triggered. So, I had no time to waste, especially not on two fully grown men. Marco never liked Xander. "Tell me the code." I crouched down on the same level as the vault.
"I got the drive. Now lead me to the fifth floor." I uttered, shutting back the vault.
"That was clean, I must say." A third, unrecognized voice of a man greeted me from behind. I stilled, eyes widening. The man was inside the room with me. I quickly pulled out my gun, turned, and aimed it at him.
"Chichi? Chichi, are you there?" Marco called out. "Chichi, talk to us. Who the fuck is there?" Xander said. Worry reeked in their tones. But I was rooted in my place. He looked so unconcerned about my gun at all, casually leaning against the cabinet. The calm ones were the deadliest.
"Do we have a problem?" I asked.
"That depends on how things will go from here. But judging from how smart you were just now, you must know why I'm here." He replied, his words slow and unhurried. "And I'm sure you know that I will not give it to you, right?" I said, not taking my eyes off him.
"I know. But what's good is the drive to you, if I possess the decryption code already? Hand it over, nicely, nobody has to get hurt." He said.
Fuck! He went for the code while I came for the drive. Meanwhile, Marco and Xander kept shouting in the background, asking about the masked man. My grip on the gun tightened. "None of you will come after me. And no, I don't know who the fuck this guy is. But I got this." I said and pulled the trigger.
And what followed next was an utter mess. So much for not getting caught. Silently, a hand-to-hand struggle in the dimly lit room. We both kicked and punched each other, causing us to fall on our backs on opposite sides.
At the end of the day, we came to a mutual understanding after our masks fell off. Behold! I was fighting with the infamous Jr. Conti, the Mafia lord. And guess what? Nonchalance ran deep in their blood. I gave him a nosebleed. He gave me a split lip, stinging as fuck, but I’d snatched the encryption tool from him while fighting, so now I had both items.
We had an agreement; I give him a casino in Milan, which was Antonios, and I would probably get killed for it later, and in return, he let me go with the items.
"Hey, wait." He shouted, and I paused, not turning to look at him.
"How will I reach you?" he asked.
"I will look for you."
"How can I be sure of this deal?"
"You can kill me if I don't keep it," I said and walked to the parking lot. It's been a long fucking day.
~30~Chiara“You haven’t spoken to me since we left home.” Mama said as we both sat on the lounge, waiting for the Viva to finish arranging the samples of wedding dresses for me. I leaned back on the couch, “I just have nothing to say.”She hummed in response and after a moment of silence she placed her hand on mine which was resting between us on the couch. Her warmth spread on it instantly, giving me the relief that I’d deprived myself of for the past few weeks. The past few days have been crazy. I’d find her laughing over a joke that Antonio made while they were having dinner with Marco and Luca. I never thought I’d meet with such a surprise as I was back from the training center. But since then, I didn’t know what to think of my mother.I wished to talk to her about it, but then I was in the phase of protecting them by staying away from them. And it helped. I haven’t seen her or Marco with any bruises lately. Antonio must be happy that I was finally doing exactly what he wanted. G
~29~Chiara20 years ago….I opened the door and sat in before strapping the seatbelt. “You did well.” Antonio said to me before pressing a button on his handphone. At least, I didn’t have to slit anybody’s throat today.I had just let out a breath of relief when suddenly a scary blowing sound came from behind us. I could feel the heat and the flames at the corners of my eyes as we all got shoved ahead at the impact. My eyes widened up and I quickly turned behind, only to find out it was the car I’d been to just a few seconds ago.It was lit with a raging fire while the four good uncles who gave me candy were screaming on top of their lungs. The fire was burning them alive. Until their voices died down.“Go! What are you waiting for?” Antonio barked at the driver. Tears left my eyes. My body trembled as I pressed the candy in my pocket, watching the fire I caused as our car raced away.****Back to the present…“Chiara! Chiara, wake up!” My body was shaking. “Shit! Chiara!” My eyes sh
~28~Chiara“Here,” he said. I sat up and grabbed the cup from his hand. “Are you crying?” he asked, sitting on a remaining stable couch. “No.” I wiped my face and took a sip. He didn’t reply to that and drank his coffee as well. A comfortable silence passed between us.“When was your first kill?” I asked, wanting to get out of my head. Carmelo took a sip before replying to me, “I was fourteen,” he said. I watched him keenly, waiting for him to continue.“He touched one of our maids inappropriately from time to time. She kept it a secret because she was worried she could lose her job and nobody would believe her. I shot him three times on the forehead when I caught him red handed.” He sighed, “He was our home tutor.” He added.“And now he is only bones buried six feet under. Served him right.” I said, finishing my coffee and setting the cup on the nightstand. “Mhm hm. How about you?” he asked. Our gazes met and held. My heart was beating fast inside my chest. Worry smeared all over m
~27~ChiaraGunshots! Gunshots everywhere!I sat abruptly. My eyes opened wide as I took in my surroundings, groaning with my throbbing head. I was in an unrecognizable room. My breaths faltered and my heart was racing as footsteps approached what I’d collected in a short time… was a washroom.I heedlessly reached for the flower vase on the night stand and held it ready. The moment the person came out… I flung the vase. Just in time for him to move back an inch. The vase smashed against the wall instead and scattered down. Thunders roared outside and the rain poured harder.“Whoa! Sweetie, calm down.” Carmelo said, raising both of his hands up. My eyes narrowed at him, “Why the fuck am I here with you?” I asked, reaching for something else inside the nightstand. He eyed the gun in my hand before meeting up with my gaze. “Yeah, we don’t have to go down that road. Just listen to me first.” He said.I groaned, feeling a shooting pain that had me shut my eyes. I shook my head and aimed at
~26~Chiara I looked at the text on my screen. I've been doing this since this morning. Carmelo had sent me a good morning text, it was now evening, and I haven’t replied yet. I just couldn’t. I sighed and placed the phone down. Thunders shook my heart and the lightning blinded my vision from now and then as the driver was taking me back home from work. I was already in a foul mood and now this rainstorm made it even gloomier. I was getting married in fucking two weeks.“The rain is too heavy, madam. I suggest we take a different route.” He said. I shut my eyes and leaned my head on the headrest. “Do whatever you can, just get me home.” I replied, yawning. This weather called for a long and relaxing nap. If only I was on my bed, under a warm hug of my duvet. I pulled the suit coat further up to my chest, getting relief from the shivers.A loud bang made me jump on my seat, followed by another one, and another one, and then a piercing screech of our car. The gunshots went on despite
~25~CHIARA Lake Como trip was fucked up, but not as fucked as it came to an end. I was returning home with a new victory to boast about. Relieved with a newfound friendship that we had formed between me and Carmelo. At least my time away from my gallery was worth it. The gates slid to the side, and the driver drove us in.CC: Promise me you won't drink alone. I'll be in Milan for a while, so just tell me.Me: PromiseNo way in hell had I thought I'd be chatting in leisure with the man either. But here I was, grinning like a fool as I exchanged texts with him. Turned out he could be tolerable. I slapped a hand on my face hard, shocking the driver who dared not ask a question.I couldn't get carried away by these stupid feelings that were built in one day. How could I forget that I was using him without remorse? I shoved the phone back in the bag and sat straight as the car pulled over at the entrance. The moment I stepped down, a guard and a maid came over. Without a word, the maid t
