Chapter 2

Author: Three Two
Amanda was over the moon. All these years, she'd been worried that her failed marriage with my father would leave me traumatized.

To sort out my love life as soon as possible, she arranged for me to have dinner with the guy I'd chosen the very next day.

When I saw Jamie Canberra sitting across from me, I couldn't help but feel a little awkward.

He raised a brow with a smirk. "I think it's love at first sight for me. So, when are we getting married?"

His bluntness made me choke on my water.

"We've just met for the first time. We barely know each other. Isn't it a bit too soon to talk about marriage?"

He looked down and murmured, "It's not the first time–"

But he spoke so quietly I didn't catch it. "Sorry, what did you say?"

Jamie gave a faint smile. "Nothing."

Then, without warning, he pushed aside the tableware in front of him and leaned in close to me. I could feel the warmth of his breath on my face.

His eyes sparkled like an eager puppy wanting a pat. "I work at my family's company, love racing, don't smoke, drink, or gamble. No messy romantic past either. Selena, is there anything else you'd like to know? Even if it's something more private, I'm open."

He shifted closer and closer, but a voice suddenly called out.

"What are you two doing?"

Snapping out of it, I quickly pulled away, only to see Connor standing there with Vanessa Kruger.

Jamie stood up and greeted him casually, "You're Selena's neighbor, right? We're just two young people dating."

Connor's expression grew darker, and Vanessa gave his sleeve a tug. "Selena's old enough to date, Connor. Even if you think of yourself as her big brother, you're just her neighbor. Don't get too involved."

But then I froze and stared at her finger. She was wearing a very familiar ring.

It was the ring I'd designed in secret without telling Connor. I'd revised it countless times, hoping that someday, when we got married, that would be our wedding ring.

"Where did you get that ring?" I asked.

Vanessa's face lit up with pride. "Connor had it custom made just for our wedding."

Connor smiled. "Selena, don't you think it looks beautiful on Vanessa's hand?"

So he knew. He'd known all along what I'd been foolishly doing behind the scenes. It felt like someone was ripping my heart apart. I stared at him in shock.

"Can I have my ring back?"

He caressed Vanessa's hand. "Selena, some things were never meant for you."

Fury took over, and I reached out to grab it.

Vanessa screamed in panic, and Connor gently soothed her before taking off the ring.

"This ring looks too cheap for the spotlight," he said, "just like the person who liked it, cheap, and not fit to be seen. It doesn't deserve to be worn by Vanessa."

With a casual flick of his hand, the ring that once carried all my hopes flew out the window and vanished from sight.

I fought to hold back the tears welling in my eyes. Suddenly, I didn't feel like fighting anymore.

"Connor, Vanessa, I'm sorry. I was being immature."

I left with Jamie, not noticing the dark, unreadable look in Connor's eyes.

-

Later that night, back at my apartment, Connor showed up. The moment I opened the door, he slammed me against the wall.

"Selena, did my words mean nothing to you? What the hell were you doing today?" he demanded.

I looked at him, exhausted. "I just want to live a normal life too."

Connor laughed bitterly. "Selena, I get to live a normal life. You don't. You're exactly what I want, and I'm not done with you yet. You'll stay with me.

"Or do you want to see what'll happen if your fragile, conservative mother sees explicit photos of you fooling around with an engaged man? Do you think she'll survive that with her heart condition?"

Jamie practically jumped with joy when he found out I agreed to go abroad with him.I still felt a bit guilty. Even when we were in the departure lounge of the airport."You really don't regret it?" I asked. "I know you only fought with your family and took it this far, even leaving the country, because of me."Jamie gave a bitter smile and shook his head. "I know I was a total disappointment to my parents, but they're still my mom and dad. They won't really give up on me. "Going overseas is also my way of proving myself. When I come back, I'll be ready to face the music." Then he looked at me seriously. "But if fate hands me a chance and I let the person I love slip away again, I'll never forgive myself."Faced with feelings like that, I didn't know how to respond.Jamie wouldn't let me dodge the question. He tugged on my arm and whined playfully. "You still owe me a kiss from last time! I'm not letting that slide. You have to make it up to me!"He acted all spoiled and flirty

They both looked unhappy to see me.Amanda looked at me. She seemed heartbroken and furious. "You ungrateful child! What are you even doing back here?"Stephen gave me a look too. His eyes held a faint trace of disgust, though he was too well-mannered to let it fully show.I forced myself to stay calm. "I have something to say. Let's wait for Connor to arrive first."Stephen seemed cautious. "Why are you still trying to get close to my son?"I pretended not to hear him and waited for Connor. When he arrived, he looked utterly drained. His eyes were bloodshot, and when he saw me, his mouth opened slightly, but no words came out.I looked at him calmly. "Connor, do you have anything to say? To your dad? To my mom?"He flinched. "I was wrong–"But nothing more followed.I stepped closer. "Can I take a look at it? The thing that made you so full of hate and convinced you of something that never even happened?"His shoulders trembled. He looked completely drained of strength.I

Connor completely dropped all pretense. He was showing his violent side now.I thought, 'Maybe this is who he really is.'His twisted smile practically contorted his face."Selena, I really underestimated you. You've got some nerve."Jamie got out of the car silently and landed a solid punch on Connor's face. "You don't get to talk about her like that!"Connor grabbed Jamie by the collar in rage."Punk, do you know your parents are looking for you everywhere? Falling out with them over a woman, aren't you ashamed of yourself?"Jamie struck back even harder. "That's none of your business. I'm doing what I want!"They started going at each other like they'd lost their minds.Terrified someone would get seriously hurt, I grabbed the fire extinguisher and swung it at Connor. It hit him square in the back. Stunned, he turned to look at me."You hit me, for him?"I stared back with a blank expression. "Too bad I didn't hit you in the face."Pain flickered across Connor's face, a

I sneered and cut Connor off."What, still want me to be your mistress, Connor? Haven't I paid off my debt yet?"Connor's eyes flashed with shame and irritation, and he retorted with a sarcastic reply. "Yeah, seeing you this pathetic, I figured I'd give you a chance."So full of pride now, huh, Selena? You've got nothing left. Don't come crawling back later begging to be my mistress again. By then, there won't even be a spot for you."He slammed the door and left. I collapsed onto the floor. I wished I had never met Connor. But he hadn't been gone long when the doorbell rang again.I thought it was him coming back, and I grabbed the fruit knife."What do you want from me now?" I demanded as I opened the door. But Jamie stood before. He looked thinner and worn down."Selena, my race is tomorrow. You promised me you'd come watch."I was surprised. I didn't expect him to still show up after everything that happened.I let him into the living room. With a bitter smile, I told hi

Seeing Connor again, I wanted nothing more than to tear a chunk of flesh from his body."What does your mom's death have to do with me? Or my mom?"Connor's expression twisted in rage. He grabbed my chin hard and spat out every word through clenched jaws. "What does your mom have to do with it?"If your mom hadn't been my dad's mistress, pushing my mother into depression, do you think she would've killed herself?"I froze. I'd never heard anything like that before."You're lying! My mom would never do that!"Connor's grip tightened like he wanted to crush my jaw. "It's all in my mother's journal, clear as day. Your mom was a filthy homewrecker."Tears welled up from the pain. I used all my strength to slap him. "You're lying! She's not like that! She's not!"Connor let out a mocking laugh. "Lying in that hospital bed now? Looks like she's finally getting what she deserves. And using her daughter worked just fine."At that moment, everything became clear. My voice shook uncontr

There was a sudden commotion outside the door. Connor leaned forward to whisper in my ear."Selena, I was actually feeling soft-hearted and was going to let you go. But you just wouldn't listen, huh? You can't blame me for this. You owe me."Then he grabbed my shoulders and shouted loudly, "Selena, I've always thought of you as my sister! I never once had any inappropriate thoughts about you!"You drugged me back then and did what you did. That was already bad enough. But today is your engagement day. You can't afford to make another mistake! Forget me. I can't betray my fiancée!"Just then, the door opened, and everyone outside clearly heard what he said.Seeing our disheveled clothes, Amanda clutched her chest and slapped me hard across the face. She didn't hold back. Blood trickled down from the corner of my mouth."You're a disgrace! Did all the manners I taught you go to waste?" she screamed. "I spent years raising you, not so you could throw yourself at a man with a fiancée

Jamie's eyes lit up when he saw me, but as he stepped closer and noticed the red slap mark on my face, the spark instantly faded. A violent storm brewed in his gaze."Who did this?" he asked.I shook my head wearily. "Don't ask, okay?"A flash of coldness passed through his eyes, but he forced a smile. "Got time? Come with me. I'll take you somewhere that'll make you forget everything."I nodded without thinking. -Jamie took me to the racing track. We got into one of the cars. With one step of the accelerator, the engine roared to life. The noise cut through the night sky with deafening force.Facing life and death head-on, it was like my mind emptied. Every inch of me was filled with adrenaline. When the car finally came to a stop, I hadn't yet come down from the high.Jamie's eyes gleamed with reckless joy. "Well? Wasn't that a rush?"I nodded. "Yeah. Thank you."He drove me home, but when we got to the front of my building, he refused to unlock the door. He leaned over

It felt like someone had dumped a bucket of ice water over my head.I used to believe Connor and I were in love. He had said so many sweet things to me when we had slept together. But the truth was, I had just been a plaything. He forced a kiss on me, and I slapped him.He licked his lips. "Feel better now? If you're done, clean yourself up. Vanessa invited you to dinner to smooth things over. She's being the mature one here, so don't act like a child."-Vanessa showed up with a set of expensive jewelry as a gift for me, saying it was an apology. I wanted nothing to do with either of them. We went back and forth, and in the end, I didn't accept it.At dinner, the two of them were overly affectionate. Connor picked out the bones in her fish, picked off the green onions and cilantro she didn't like, and fed her bite by bite. It was just like what he used to do for me.It made my chest feel tight. I excused myself and went to the restroom.Once dinner was over, something unexpect
