Chapter 46

Gerald didn't pick up the call. It went straight to voicemail, his professional greeting playing before the beep. Tiana hung up without leaving a message. What was she supposed to say anyway? "Help, I'm drowning and I don't know how to save myself"?

She stared at her phone for a long moment, then set it face-down on her desk and forced herself to focus on work. There were emails to respond to, reports to review, contracts to file. Busy work that kept her hands moving and her mind from spiraling into complete panic.

The hours crawled by with agonizing slowness.

Around four PM, Lyn appeared in her doorway, leaning against the frame with her arms crossed and an expression that was half-concerned, half-amused.

"So," Lyn said, drawing out the word. "Interesting day?"

Tiana looked up from her computer. "What?"

"There's a rumor going around." Lyn stepped fully into the office and closed the door behind her. "About you and Mr. Lancaster."

Tiana's stomach dropped. "What kind

Chapter 51 Nikolai was staring at her hand. At that conspicuously bare ring finger. Waiting for an explanation like everyone else at the table. Tiana could feel the weight of all their eyes on her—Eva's sharp and judgmental, Martha and Elena's gleeful with anticipation of drama, Sandy's concerned, and Nikolai's... unreadable. But Pascal was right there. Sitting at the table, fork in hand, seemingly focused on his chicken but—Tiana knew better. She knew her son. Pascal might look oblivious, might seem completely absorbed in his meal, but he was listening. He always was. On several occasions over the years, Pascal had asked her questions that proved he noticed far more than he let on. "Why doesn't Grandma ever talk to you, Mommy?" "Why does Aunt Martha make that face when she looks at you?" "How come Daddy never holds your hand like Uncle James holds Aunt Martha's?" Each time, Tiana had deflected with careful non-answers, protecting him from the ugly truth of their family dynamics

Chapter 50 Tiana followed the others into the dining room, her footsteps measured and deliberate. The room was exactly as she remembered a long table that could seat twenty people, crystal chandeliers hanging overhead, walls lined with portraits of Toriaga ancestors who stared down with judgment from their gilded frames. She'd always hated this room. It felt like a courtroom where she was perpetually on trial. Tonight, she walked in with her head high, her shoulders back, looking every bit like she belonged there. The family took their usual seats. Eva at one head of the table where George used to sit, claiming her position as matriarch now that he was gone. Martha and Elena on one side with their husbands. Sandy across from them. Tiana took the seat George had always insisted she occupy. The one right beside Nikolai at the other end of the table. The seat of honor that she'd never felt she deserved but had been forced to fill anyway. Nikolai sat down beside her, his presence a

Chapter 49 The moment they stepped out of the car, before Tiana could even fully register where she was, a figure came rushing down the front steps. "Tiana!" Sandy — Nikolai's youngest sister, practically flew toward her, arms outstretched, her face lit up with genuine joy. She wrapped Tiana in a warm, tight hug that caught her completely off guard. "Sandy," Tiana breathed, feeling some of the tension in her shoulders ease. She hugged back, grateful for this one person in the Toriaga family who didn't make her feel like an intruder. "I'm so glad you're here," Sandy whispered in her ear. "I've been worried about you." When they pulled apart, Sandy immediately crouched down to Pascal's level. "And look at you! You've grown so much since the funeral! Come here, give your favorite aunt a hug." Pascal giggled and threw himself at Sandy, who spun him around once before setting him back on his feet. Only then did Sandy turn to acknowledge Nikolai. "Brother," she said, her tone notic

Chapter 48 In as much as the sex kept replaying in her head—flashes of memory that came at the most inconvenient times, making her cheeks flush and her stomach flip—Tiana tried desperately not to pay attention to it. It was just her mind and body messing with her. That's all it was. She'd been touched so rarely in the past eight years, had gone so long without any physical intimacy with a human man, that of course her traitorous body would cling to those memories. It was a biological response, nothing more. Muscle memory mixed with deprivation. Besides, she'd loved Nikolai for so long—had wasted so many years pining for him—that her heart was still betraying her. Still acting like it had a say in things. Still fluttering stupidly whenever he was near, like it hadn't learned its lesson about loving people who would never love you back. She pushed the thoughts away and tried to focus on Pascal's voice as he chattered from the backseat. "And then at recess, Tommy said his dad c

Chapter 47 Tiana just couldn't do what Lyn had urged her to do. As much as she wanted to be brave, as much as she wanted to send a polite message declining the meeting and stay home in her safe cocoon, she couldn't. The years of conditioning ran too deep. The fear of making things worse, of giving them more ammunition in a custody battle, paralyzed her into compliance. So she went home, walked through the front door of the NT mansion with heavy steps, and immediately went to find Pascal. He was in his room playing with his dinosaur collection, making sound effects as he crashed a T-Rex into a Triceratops. When he saw her, his face lit up. "Mommy! You're home!" "Hey, baby." She knelt beside him, brushing his hair back from his forehead. "We need to get ready. We're going to see your grandma and aunts at the Toriaga mansion tonight." Pascal's eyes widened with excitement. "Really?" "Yes, sweetheart." The words tasted bitter on her tongue. "Yay!" Pascal jumped up and ran to his
