LOGINDamien walked out of the restaurant without bothering to explain anything.
Pushing my chair back quickly, I rushed after him with tears still clouding my vision, aware of the stares following me across the restaurant.
By the time I got outside, he was already beside his car.
“Damien.” My breathing came out uneven as I grabbed his arm. “There has to be an explanation for this. Tell me this is some stupid joke. Tell me it’s—”
He jerked his arm away. “Nora, I know you didn’t go to college, but I’m pretty sure you can still comprehend what you read. You saw the messages.”
He opened the driver’s door. My stomach dropped as I realized he was actually about to leave. “Damien!”
The door slammed shut in my face.
I hurried around the car and reached for the passenger door, but it was locked.
The window rolled down halfway. “What are you trying to do?”
“You can’t just walk away after this. You owe me an explanation. What did I ever do to deserve this kind of wickedness from you?”
He replied with a bored expression. “You got to experience places you normally never would’ve. I’d say you benefited too.”
“Damien… You said you loved me. You proposed to me. Why would you do something like this?”
He sighed. “My problem with you is that you’re too emotional. You kept holding onto this whole no-sex thing, which was literally the only reason this dragged on for so long.”
He started the ignition. “I don’t even know why I bothered waiting. You don’t even look like someone who’d be great in bed. You can keep the ring.”
My hand moved to the ring sitting on my finger as I finally accepted what this really was.
I had been played, and badly too.
Pulling it off, I threw it straight at him.
“You bastard. I don’t ever want to see your face again. Scumbag!”
He chuckled dryly. “You’re calling me names like you weren’t trying to climb the social ladder through me.” He pointed at himself, then at me. “Me marry you? Seriously? How exactly was I supposed to introduce you to my parents? ‘Dad, Mom, meet Nora. The waitress who served me pasta four years ago. I want to marry her.’”
He laughed. “Oh please. Be realistic. You’re just a pretty face, Nora. And trust me, there are plenty of pretty girls out there willing to play.”
The window rolled back up before I could respond, and the next thing I knew, the tires screeched against the road as Damien sped off, leaving me standing there crying on the sidewalk while strangers stared openly at me.
A sharp pain spread through my chest as I wrapped my arms around myself.
The last time something hurt this badly was after Dad died and Noah and I realized we were truly alone.
Tears kept blurring my vision as I wandered down the street with no idea where I was even going. I couldn’t even bring myself to go home. Noah warned me about Damien from the very beginning. I had just been too in love to listen.
The pain in my chest kept getting worse the longer I walked, and my legs started protesting.
When my phone started ringing inside my bag, I ignored it and kept walking. But the calls wouldn’t stop. Annoyance finally made me pull it out without even checking who was calling.
“What?”
“Nora?”
The panic in Craig’s voice instantly made my stomach drop.
“What happened?” I asked.
“It’s Noah. He collapsed outside the house. I rushed him to the hospital.”
Everything inside me went cold as fear crashed over the heartbreak. “What hospital?”
“Saint Laurel Memorial.”
By the time I got there, Craig was waiting in the hallway. Seeing me, he quickly got to his feet.
“What happened?” The words rushed out of me. “What did the doctors say?”
“They’re still checking him.” Concern covered his face. “I came outside to take out the trash and saw him lying there.”
“Thank you for helping him,” I whispered.
Craig shook his head. “Don’t even mention it.”
A few minutes later, a doctor stepped out asking for Noah West’s family, and both Craig and I stood up.
The doctor explained that Noah collapsed from exhaustion. His blood sugar was dangerously low, he wasn’t eating properly, and severe sleep deprivation had pushed his body too far.
“He’s stable now, but this shouldn’t have gotten to this point. He needs proper rest. You people can’t allow him to keep neglecting himself like this.”
“Thank you, Doctor. We’ll do better,” I assured him.
After he left, Craig handed me Noah’s phone. “Found it on the ground beside him.”
“Thank you.”
“Noah would’ve done the same for me.”
A tired silence settled between us before he checked the time. “I should head home. Early shift tomorrow.”
“I understand.”
After Craig left, the hallway grew quiet again, and the heartbreak I had been trying to outrun came rushing back.
Noah’s phone suddenly started ringing, BOSS flashing across the screen.
The call kept coming nonstop until I finally answered, only for an angry voice to thunder through the line before I could even speak. “How long does it take to deliver one damn envelope? If you’re not here in the next ten minutes, consider yourself fired.”
“Shut the fuck up!” I yelled into the phone, my voice shaking with anger.
He stopped talking immediately.
“You finally succeeded, okay? My brother is lying in a hospital bed and all you care about is some stupid envelope! Look at the time! Is he even supposed to be working right now? He should be sleeping, not running around destroying himself for a job that clearly doesn’t care whether he lives or dies!”
When he spoke again, his voice was noticeably lower this time. “Where’s Noah?”
“He’s at Saint Laurel Memorial. Come get your damn envelope yourself, you bastard.”
Unpacking the suitcase I came back with, I found the vase and chuckled to myself. I carried it down the hall and knocked on Alan's door. The door pulled open right away, a small smile on his face."You don't have to knock anymore," he said. "You're free to come in whenever you want.""Okay."Then he added that if I wanted to move in, I could. The idea did not excite me. This had once been Amy's room. Sharing it with him felt wrong in a way I could not fully explain."I think I'll be alright in my own room. I'd rather we keep separate rooms for now."He nodded in quiet understanding.I held out the vase. "I came to give you this properly, like you asked.""Go ahead. It's yours to place." He gestured to the flower by the window. I bent down and swapped the old container for the new one, setting the flower gently inside it."Thank you," he said once I was done."Well, you paid for it.""For you.""It's yours now.""And they said not to give a gift away." The corner of his mouth lifted."
He came back with my camera, the flower vase he had bought me, and pasta from Italy. I started laughing immediately, telling him he said something."Correction," he said, smiling. "Many things."He explained he brought all of it in case I refused to give him a listening ear, he would still have a reason to hang around my location for three days straight. First the pasta, since he knew I would not resist it. Then the camera. Then the vase."How did you even get my camera?" I asked, still laughing."I went to your room to talk when I first got back, and noticed you were already gone. Closet cleared out. The camera was on the table, so I grabbed it on my way out. The vase too. As for the pasta, I stopped in Italy first before flying here.""Thank you. I do like it. All of it actually.”Then I told him the truth about the vase, that I originally wanted it because I was planning to give it to him, so he could use it for the flower in his room."Okay then, give it to me the way you meant to
Him mentioning Amy had me completely locked in. I had waited so long for the full story that I could not let it slip past me now."Give me a minute," I told him. "I need to let Cash know I'm leaving."He nodded. "I'll be outside."I found Cash in the crowd and leaned close to his ear so he could hear me over the music. "Alan is here. I'm leaving with him to talk."He looked around, scanning the room. "He's here? Where?""Outside.""You want me to come with you?""It's fine." I shook my head. "Stay and enjoy your night."Alan was waiting by a black car when I stepped out. He opened the door for me, and the driver pulled off once we were both inside."Where are we going?""My hotel."I nodded, and the car went quiet. After a while, I asked how he even knew I was in Sweden."Noah.""And the exact city? My location?""You showed up in one of Cash's game posts. Tonight, too, on his socials."We arrived at his hotel, and he led me up to his room. It was nothing like the hotel Cash had booke
After that night, I decided I would just take whatever came next. Maybe love was not written in my stars at all. First Damien, and now I was begging Alan to love me.I waited for the papers to arrive so I could move on with my life. They never came. One day turned into another, and another into another after that. I heard nothing from Alan. He was hardly home, and I made myself a promise not to be the one to call and ask what was taking so long.It was not until I was hanging out with Lory one evening, and she asked if I knew when Alan was coming back, that I found out he had left the country the day before.I covered that up and told her probably when he was done sorting things out. Anyone finding out about the divorce was not on the agenda until it was official.Gradually, I had already started packing my things. A part of me felt it would happen once he returned from the trip.I threw myself into blogging, which had become a near-daily habit whenever I was not at work. My energy at
Alan shook his head. "No, Nora. You cannot love me. You are not allowed to."He dragged a hand down his face, exhaling hard. "I made the terms clear from the start. The contract—""I remember what the contract stated." I got to my feet, cutting him off, walking closer until there was barely any space left between us. "I thought we had moved past the contract."Since the truth was already out, I let the rest of it follow."With everything happening between us, do you honestly still think we are following the rules? I could not help falling for you. God knows I tried not to. But you did not exactly make it easy either."I grabbed his arms. "I am done lying to myself. I do not see this marriage as a contract anymore, and I want to keep being your wife."He yanked his arm free. "You do not understand. I cannot be your husband in that way.""I will speak to my lawyer." His voice came out flat, distant. "I am sorry, but we have to annul the marriage."He turned to leave but I held his hand.
"I'm coming," Alan told her, and ended the call.He stared at the ceiling before finally getting out of bed, moving to his closet, pulling on the first thing his hands landed on.Before he left, he paused at the door. "Wait for me here."I meant to. I really did, right up until five minutes stretched into ten, and Lory's voice would not stop looping in my head. *How exactly is Jacky still holding this much power over him when you're the one in his bed.*Given everything happening between us lately, I wanted to believe Alan cared about me, at least a little. Amy's picture came down because I voiced out it made me uncomfortable.Playing it safe the way Alan always instructed had never once gotten me anywhere. If anything, things only turned around in my favor whenever I did the opposite of what he asked of me."Fuck it," I muttered, getting out of bed, damning the consequences.I was married to this man, and until I knew the full story about Amy, I decided he deserved to live his life.
