Chapter 3

Penulis: Triple Threat
Rowan took my hand and solemnly placed it over his heart. "Just give me a little more time. I promise I'll sort things out with Meg and her son. I won't let you or Ry feel neglected ever again!"

I stared at him blankly. I could hardly remember the last time he had looked at me so earnestly.

Perhaps it was during our wedding ceremony in that pristine white chapel, where our hands were laced together as he vowed to love and cherish me for the rest of his life.

Or mayhaps it was the day Ryan came into the world, in the hospital delivery room, when he carefully cradled Ryan in his arms, his lips trembling as he pressed a kiss to my forehead and whispered, "Gigi, from now on, I'll never let anyone or anything hurt you and Ryan again!"

Looking back on those memories, I fell silent for a long while. In the end, I decided to tell him about the divorce. "Rowan, to be honest—"

"By the way, where did you put that limited-edition Lego set you bought for Ry last time? Is it in the study cabinet? Meg said Nel has been into Lego lately, so I'm going to let him play with it for a few days."

With that, he went into the study, dug out that box of Lego, grabbed his car keys, and rushed out the door.

With a loud thud, the front door slammed shut, and Rowan's figure disappeared.

I stared at the door for a long time before whispering the words I hadn't finished earlier, "To be honest… Ry and I don't want you anymore."

There were only two days left until we left for good.

At midnight, having finally finished packing everything, I collapsed onto the bed in sheer exhaustion.

Just then, my phone lit up. It was a message from Rowan. "Nel loves the Lego. I spent the whole night building it with him. Meg specifically asked me to thank you."

At midnight, my husband was thanking me on behalf of another woman. I tugged at the corner of my lips, and I jeered out of sheer disbelief.

However, I couldn't be bothered to be upset. After all, the outcome would be the same either way.

I opened the chat box and casually replied, "Don't mention it. I wasn't the one who gave it to her. By the way, that Lego set was Ryan's absolute favorite birthday gift. He's been waiting all this time for you to find the time to build it with him."

After sending that single message, I powered off my phone, closed my eyes, and went to sleep, unconcerned about how Rowan's expression might change upon reading the text on the other end of the line.

At 8:00 am the following day, Rowan came home unusually early. After stepping inside and taking off his coat, he froze in his tracks at the sight of several suitcases arranged neatly in the living room.

Without even putting his coat down, he walked into the bedroom and asked me, looking slightly panicked, "Do you really need to pack this much luggage for a trip?"

I was helping Ryan get dressed, so I responded without sparing him a glance, "The place we're going to is far away."

After hearing that, he immediately looked at Ryan. Rowan relaxed after Ryan nodded.

Then, he set his coat aside and pulled out three tickets to Starlight Studios. "Weren't you always mad at me for not taking Ry to Starlight Studios? I bought tickets for today. The three of us can go together as a family!"

He laid them out in front of Ryan and me, as if he were showing them off. In fact, his face was filled with affection.

For a moment, I wondered if I had misheard him. It had been nearly a month since that incident, and he was only remembering it now?

However, I recalled the string of unread messages on my phone when I woke up this morning, and it suddenly clicked. So, this was his idea of compensation.

I didn't say a word as I continued to focus on helping Ryan get dressed. Ryan, on the other hand, was incredibly excited. With wide eyes, he gazed at me. "Mommy, I want to go!"

My eyes crinkled slightly, but before I could say a word, Rowan began to hem and haw. "There is just one catch, though… Meg knows we're going to take a family portrait today, and she's worried that if Nel hears about it, he'll be upset. So… maybe we can put off the family portrait until next time?"

Guilt was written all over his face as the words left his mouth.

I looked up at Rowan. "What is it?"He glanced at my boyfriend, who was buying ice cream for Ryan in the distance, and said softly, "I won't stop you from dating, but…"His Adam's apple bobbed. "Can you just have fun with them and not get married?"I froze for a second before bursting into laughter. Ryan returned with his ice cream just in time to catch those words, and he, too, guffawed. He looked up at Rowan. "Mr. Goodwin, are you begging my mom?"Rowan looked humiliated, but he didn't deny it. "Yes."Ryan took a lick of his ice cream and thought about it for a moment. "But my mom is free to marry whoever she wants. You didn't treasure her when you had her, so you don't get to tell her what to do now."Rowan's eyes completely lost their spark, turning dull and lifeless. Looking at him, he suddenly felt like a total stranger. The man who used to mean the world to me was standing in front of me—humble, remorseful, and wretched. Yet, I didn't even get a kick out of seeing him

I didn't want to accept them.Ryan, however, said solemnly, "This is what he owes us, Mommy. He should've given me these in the past."I froze for a moment and agreed. Consequently, we accepted all his money and gifts.Yet, Ryan never called him "Daddy". Every time Rowan came over, Ryan would nod politely. "Hello, Mr. Goodwin." Rowan's face would pale every time he heard it. But he no longer dared to correct him. In the past, Ryan and I had been the ones chasing after him, asking when he was coming home, if he could spend time with Ryan, and whether he actually cared about us at all. Now, it was the other way around. He was chasing after Ryan and me, but we were no longer looking back. Whenever the holidays rolled around, I'd take Ryan on trips. We'd head to the mountains in the winter to see the snow, spend long weekends hitting the beach to surf, and use the summer break to fly across the ocean and explore ancient castles. Rowan somehow got hold of our itineraries and wo

When I woke up the next day, Rowan was no longer at the door. The front desk delivered a letter. The envelope bore his handwriting. "Gigi, Ry, I won't give up!"After reading it, I threw it straight into the trash. Ryan, who was sitting on the edge of the bed munching on a piece of bread, looked up at me. "Mommy, what did he write?"I smiled. "Nothing. It was just the weather forecast."Ryan smiled as well. That was the first time he had truly smiled since we left Rowan.…A lot of things happened over the course of the following year. First came Megan's downfall. The nurse at the hospital handed the cops a video of her deliberately feeding Nelson mangoes. In the video, she clearly knew Nelson was allergic, yet she repeatedly coaxed him into eating them. The cops opened an official investigation into the case. Initially, she tried to argue her way out of it, claiming she had only been careless. However, the surveillance footage from the hospital's corridor, the nurse'

The color drained from Rowan's face in an instant. The very next second, with a thud, he dropped to his knees at the doorway. "Please, Gigi. Give me one more chance. For Ry's sake!"My gaze went cold when I heard Ryan's name on his lips. "So, now you remember Ry?"Rowan parted his lips, but he couldn't make a sound. Just then, soft footsteps sounded behind me. Ryan was standing behind me, clutching his little dinosaur. He looked at Rowan, who was kneeling outside the door, with a terrifyingly calm expression. Like a drowning man clutching at a straw, Rowan reached out to touch him. "Daddy's here, Ry. Please help me convince Mommy. Daddy doesn't want to divorce Mommy!"He thought Ryan would give in. After all, Ryan used to be incredibly attached to him. Whenever he came home, Ryan would rush over, hug his legs, and call out "Daddy" over and over again. However, this time, Ryan only took half a step back behind me. "Mr. Goodwin, go keep your other child company. Don't bother me

Rowan only stopped for a second before making a beeline for the exit. Furious, Megan grabbed the glass of water from the bedside table and hurled it at him. It shattered by the door. Meanwhile, Nelson suddenly began to convulse violently on the hospital bed. His face turned from pale to blue, and a strained, wheezing sound came from his throat. The nurse rushed over. "The patient has laryngeal edema! Call the doctor, quick! Prepare for resuscitation!"Megan's knees buckled from fear, and she collapsed onto the floor. …Rowan rushed to the airport overnight. There were no tickets left for the earliest flight to Ivashire. So, he sat in the airport lobby until dawn.In the meantime, he called me dozens of times and sent me over a hundred messages. "Gigi, I know I messed up.""Where are you? Let me see you just once!""Is Ry okay?""I really didn't mean to hurt you two.""Please just answer the phone!"I didn't read a single one of those messages. When the plane touched

Megan stiffened, and the container of mango in her hand dropped to the floor. The yellow fruit rolled all over the ground. The panic on her face lasted for only a second before she immediately squeezed out tears. "Rowan, I can explain! This is all a misunderstanding—"Rowan rushed over, snatched the remaining mangoes out of her hand, and hurled them on the ground. "A misunderstanding? You knew perfectly well that he's allergic to mangoes, yet you still forced him to eat them? Megan, he's your biological son! Don't you know that severe food allergies can kill someone?"Megan's face went pale from his outburst. Nelson burst into tears on the hospital bed. After hearing the commotion, a nurse rushed in. "You two, stop arguing! The patient's condition is unstable right now!"Rowan stared long and hard at Megan. At that moment, the way he looked at her no longer held any pity, only disgust. Realizing she couldn't fake it anymore, she dried her tears and sneered. "That's right. I did
