Chapter 4

Penulis: Triple Threat
Ryan froze. Bit by bit, the light in his eyes visibly dimmed. "I see…"

Slowly, he lowered his head and fell silent, his eyes pooling with tears.

Completely oblivious, Rowan continued, "Meg only asked for this one little favor, and honestly, I didn't think it was a big deal. We can always take the family portrait some other time. Right, Ry?"

He had no idea that Ryan and I were leaving tomorrow. This was his very last chance.

Yet, neither Ryan nor I said a word. We merely nodded wordlessly.

"Alright."

"Okay."

Rowan breathed a sigh of relief, and a visible smile spread across his face, as if a weight had been lifted from his shoulders. "In that case, I'll tell Meg right now. See you at Starlight Studios at 3:00 pm!"

With that, he rose to his feet and left.

When he was almost at the door, he turned back around. "Honey, Ry, you two are the best!"

Neither Ryan nor I made a sound. Once he left, Ryan jumped off the bed and took the backpack he had already prepared from the closet. "I don't ever want to see Mr. Goodwin again, Mommy. Can we leave early?"

I changed our flight tickets to 3:00 pm that day. After confirming the passenger information, I immediately started making the final preparations for our departure.

At 9:00 am, I made breakfast in this house for the very last time. The cake Rowan had bought last night was still in the fridge. Ryan took it out and threw it into the trash.

At 10:00 am, I retrieved the divorce agreement Rowan had signed from my lawyer. The first clause stated that I had full custody of Ryan.

While we waited, I came across Megan's new post. "Our family portrait is finally in our hands! My boy and his daddy love it so much. They said it has to be hung right where everyone can see it!"

Ryan was beside me, folding paper airplanes. When he saw the post, he didn't comment on it and merely urged me, "Hurry up and sign it, Mommy!"

At 1:00 pm, after Ryan and I finished lunch, we gathered all of our bags and suitcases and took a cab to the airport. There were still two hours left until our scheduled meeting with Rowan.

Holding an iPad, Ryan quietly looked through the photos of him and Rowan in the album. There was a photo from his one-month celebration party, where Rowan had cradled him and proudly shown him off to everyone.

There was another from when he was three years old, where Rowan held him close as they both threw up peace signs while watching a Minions movie together.

There was also a video from when he turned seven years old this year, right before Megan appeared, of Rowan following close behind him, teaching him how to ride a bicycle.

Ryan watched them over and over again without shedding a tear, yet a heavy, suffocating sadness filled the entire cab. I sat beside him in silence.

At 2:00 pm, we were about to go through security when Rowan called. "Gigi, please tell Ry I'm incredibly sorry. Nel fell and got hurt, and I had to rush him to the hospital. I'm not sure if I can make it by 3:00 pm. If you guys don't see me, just go home. Please tell Ry I'm sorry!"

He hung up on me, missing the boarding announcement echoing through the departure hall.

"Let's go." I took Ryan's hand. He nodded, selected all the photos in the album, and deleted them all with a single tap.

At 3:00 pm sharp, the plane took off. I placed the headphones over Ryan's ears and gazed out the window at the blue sky and white clouds, letting out a long sigh from the very depths of my soul.

Goodbye, Rowan.

Meanwhile, ignoring Megan's tearful pleas, Rowan bolted out of the hospital and sped toward Starlight Studios.

I looked up at Rowan. "What is it?"He glanced at my boyfriend, who was buying ice cream for Ryan in the distance, and said softly, "I won't stop you from dating, but…"His Adam's apple bobbed. "Can you just have fun with them and not get married?"I froze for a second before bursting into laughter. Ryan returned with his ice cream just in time to catch those words, and he, too, guffawed. He looked up at Rowan. "Mr. Goodwin, are you begging my mom?"Rowan looked humiliated, but he didn't deny it. "Yes."Ryan took a lick of his ice cream and thought about it for a moment. "But my mom is free to marry whoever she wants. You didn't treasure her when you had her, so you don't get to tell her what to do now."Rowan's eyes completely lost their spark, turning dull and lifeless. Looking at him, he suddenly felt like a total stranger. The man who used to mean the world to me was standing in front of me—humble, remorseful, and wretched. Yet, I didn't even get a kick out of seeing him

I didn't want to accept them.Ryan, however, said solemnly, "This is what he owes us, Mommy. He should've given me these in the past."I froze for a moment and agreed. Consequently, we accepted all his money and gifts.Yet, Ryan never called him "Daddy". Every time Rowan came over, Ryan would nod politely. "Hello, Mr. Goodwin." Rowan's face would pale every time he heard it. But he no longer dared to correct him. In the past, Ryan and I had been the ones chasing after him, asking when he was coming home, if he could spend time with Ryan, and whether he actually cared about us at all. Now, it was the other way around. He was chasing after Ryan and me, but we were no longer looking back. Whenever the holidays rolled around, I'd take Ryan on trips. We'd head to the mountains in the winter to see the snow, spend long weekends hitting the beach to surf, and use the summer break to fly across the ocean and explore ancient castles. Rowan somehow got hold of our itineraries and wo

When I woke up the next day, Rowan was no longer at the door. The front desk delivered a letter. The envelope bore his handwriting. "Gigi, Ry, I won't give up!"After reading it, I threw it straight into the trash. Ryan, who was sitting on the edge of the bed munching on a piece of bread, looked up at me. "Mommy, what did he write?"I smiled. "Nothing. It was just the weather forecast."Ryan smiled as well. That was the first time he had truly smiled since we left Rowan.…A lot of things happened over the course of the following year. First came Megan's downfall. The nurse at the hospital handed the cops a video of her deliberately feeding Nelson mangoes. In the video, she clearly knew Nelson was allergic, yet she repeatedly coaxed him into eating them. The cops opened an official investigation into the case. Initially, she tried to argue her way out of it, claiming she had only been careless. However, the surveillance footage from the hospital's corridor, the nurse'

The color drained from Rowan's face in an instant. The very next second, with a thud, he dropped to his knees at the doorway. "Please, Gigi. Give me one more chance. For Ry's sake!"My gaze went cold when I heard Ryan's name on his lips. "So, now you remember Ry?"Rowan parted his lips, but he couldn't make a sound. Just then, soft footsteps sounded behind me. Ryan was standing behind me, clutching his little dinosaur. He looked at Rowan, who was kneeling outside the door, with a terrifyingly calm expression. Like a drowning man clutching at a straw, Rowan reached out to touch him. "Daddy's here, Ry. Please help me convince Mommy. Daddy doesn't want to divorce Mommy!"He thought Ryan would give in. After all, Ryan used to be incredibly attached to him. Whenever he came home, Ryan would rush over, hug his legs, and call out "Daddy" over and over again. However, this time, Ryan only took half a step back behind me. "Mr. Goodwin, go keep your other child company. Don't bother me

Rowan only stopped for a second before making a beeline for the exit. Furious, Megan grabbed the glass of water from the bedside table and hurled it at him. It shattered by the door. Meanwhile, Nelson suddenly began to convulse violently on the hospital bed. His face turned from pale to blue, and a strained, wheezing sound came from his throat. The nurse rushed over. "The patient has laryngeal edema! Call the doctor, quick! Prepare for resuscitation!"Megan's knees buckled from fear, and she collapsed onto the floor. …Rowan rushed to the airport overnight. There were no tickets left for the earliest flight to Ivashire. So, he sat in the airport lobby until dawn.In the meantime, he called me dozens of times and sent me over a hundred messages. "Gigi, I know I messed up.""Where are you? Let me see you just once!""Is Ry okay?""I really didn't mean to hurt you two.""Please just answer the phone!"I didn't read a single one of those messages. When the plane touched

Megan stiffened, and the container of mango in her hand dropped to the floor. The yellow fruit rolled all over the ground. The panic on her face lasted for only a second before she immediately squeezed out tears. "Rowan, I can explain! This is all a misunderstanding—"Rowan rushed over, snatched the remaining mangoes out of her hand, and hurled them on the ground. "A misunderstanding? You knew perfectly well that he's allergic to mangoes, yet you still forced him to eat them? Megan, he's your biological son! Don't you know that severe food allergies can kill someone?"Megan's face went pale from his outburst. Nelson burst into tears on the hospital bed. After hearing the commotion, a nurse rushed in. "You two, stop arguing! The patient's condition is unstable right now!"Rowan stared long and hard at Megan. At that moment, the way he looked at her no longer held any pity, only disgust. Realizing she couldn't fake it anymore, she dried her tears and sneered. "That's right. I did
