Chapter 2

Penulis: Triple Threat
There was about a month before the divorce would be finalized. During those days, if Rowan could turn his life around, I would pretend nothing had ever happened for Ryan's sake. If not, I would use those days to do everything in my power to desensitize Ryan.

It was the 28th day, and Ryan had taken the initiative to call Ryan "Mr. Goodwin". Holding Ryan's slightly shivering frame, I couldn't find it in myself to feel happy. If anything, my heart felt as though it was being pierced by a thousand needles.

While we were crossing the street, Rowan finally snapped back to reality. He chased after us for a few steps, wanting to ask Ryan what was going on, when Megan's phone call came through again.

Her voice carried that same sweet, whiny tone as she asked, "Where are you, Rowan? Nel keeps crying and saying he wants his daddy. I can't calm him down."

Rowan stopped in his tracks. He stared at Ryan's and my retreating figures before responding, "Alright. I'll be there in a minute."

Right after saying that, he sent me a message that read, "Let's talk tonight." Without a moment's hesitation, he turned and left.

The roar of the car engine sounded behind us and gradually faded away into the distance.

Ryan came to a halt, threw himself into my arms, and soaked my clothes with his tears. "Mommy… We don't need Daddy anymore, okay?"

We didn't take the family portrait. I took Ryan straight back home and packed our bags.

While I was booking the plane tickets back to my hometown, Megan sent me a video. The background was another famous photo studio in the city.

Megan and Rowan were wearing matching outfits, holding a boy who was about five years old, and posing for the camera. At the end of the video, she taunted me as usual. "It's just a family portrait. Rowan and I can take one whenever we want."

In the past, I would've clapped back the very second I read Megan's taunts. But now, as I watched Ryan carefully organize his toys, I realized I just didn't care anymore.

I exited the chat and booked two plane tickets to Ivashire for the day after tomorrow. I had just completed the payment when Rowan walked through the door with a strawberry cake.

Both Ryan and I froze for a moment. Rowan used to loathe strawberry cake. Because of that, even though Ryan had inherited my crazed obsession with strawberries, he would usually choose a green tea mousse—Rowan's favorite—for his birthdays.

Why did he suddenly bring home a strawberry cake today? Ryan and I exchanged a look, unable to believe our eyes.

Rowan walked in slowly, and when he saw the open suitcases, his expression shifted slightly. "Nel wouldn't stop crying, so I stayed with him a little longer. On the way back, I remembered you both love strawberry cake, so I bought one. Why are you packing your bags? Are you going on a trip?"

I shook my head before nodding. "Something like that."

There were only two days left before the divorce would be finalized. I didn't want anything to go wrong.

For some reason, he seemed to breathe a quiet sigh of relief when he heard that.

"The photo studio called me and said you didn't show up for the shoot. I asked them to reschedule. How about tomorrow? This time, I absolutely won't break my promise again!" he promised solemnly, crouching down in front of Ryan.

Ryan froze as he put away his toys. He looked at Rowan, then at me. He seemed torn, as if he wanted to believe his father but was afraid to do so again.

Noticing Ryan's wavering heart, my own heart softened. "Alright."

This would be the last time, after all.

Ryan's eyes lit up as soon as I said that. Holding his toys, he ran into his room.

Once he left, I went back to packing our suitcases. Rowan walked up beside me and hesitated before saying, "By the way, about Ry calling me Mr. Goodwin today…"

My heart skipped a beat, and I looked up at him.

Rowan got down on one knee and set the strawberry cake down next to me. He sounded both helpless and affectionate as he continued, "I know what's going on in your head, Gigi. You think I'm treating Meg too well and neglecting you and Ry.

"But I swear, I only pity Meg. She's a single mom. I just don't want her to be too sad."

I looked up at Rowan. "What is it?"He glanced at my boyfriend, who was buying ice cream for Ryan in the distance, and said softly, "I won't stop you from dating, but…"His Adam's apple bobbed. "Can you just have fun with them and not get married?"I froze for a second before bursting into laughter. Ryan returned with his ice cream just in time to catch those words, and he, too, guffawed. He looked up at Rowan. "Mr. Goodwin, are you begging my mom?"Rowan looked humiliated, but he didn't deny it. "Yes."Ryan took a lick of his ice cream and thought about it for a moment. "But my mom is free to marry whoever she wants. You didn't treasure her when you had her, so you don't get to tell her what to do now."Rowan's eyes completely lost their spark, turning dull and lifeless. Looking at him, he suddenly felt like a total stranger. The man who used to mean the world to me was standing in front of me—humble, remorseful, and wretched. Yet, I didn't even get a kick out of seeing him

I didn't want to accept them.Ryan, however, said solemnly, "This is what he owes us, Mommy. He should've given me these in the past."I froze for a moment and agreed. Consequently, we accepted all his money and gifts.Yet, Ryan never called him "Daddy". Every time Rowan came over, Ryan would nod politely. "Hello, Mr. Goodwin." Rowan's face would pale every time he heard it. But he no longer dared to correct him. In the past, Ryan and I had been the ones chasing after him, asking when he was coming home, if he could spend time with Ryan, and whether he actually cared about us at all. Now, it was the other way around. He was chasing after Ryan and me, but we were no longer looking back. Whenever the holidays rolled around, I'd take Ryan on trips. We'd head to the mountains in the winter to see the snow, spend long weekends hitting the beach to surf, and use the summer break to fly across the ocean and explore ancient castles. Rowan somehow got hold of our itineraries and wo

When I woke up the next day, Rowan was no longer at the door. The front desk delivered a letter. The envelope bore his handwriting. "Gigi, Ry, I won't give up!"After reading it, I threw it straight into the trash. Ryan, who was sitting on the edge of the bed munching on a piece of bread, looked up at me. "Mommy, what did he write?"I smiled. "Nothing. It was just the weather forecast."Ryan smiled as well. That was the first time he had truly smiled since we left Rowan.…A lot of things happened over the course of the following year. First came Megan's downfall. The nurse at the hospital handed the cops a video of her deliberately feeding Nelson mangoes. In the video, she clearly knew Nelson was allergic, yet she repeatedly coaxed him into eating them. The cops opened an official investigation into the case. Initially, she tried to argue her way out of it, claiming she had only been careless. However, the surveillance footage from the hospital's corridor, the nurse'

The color drained from Rowan's face in an instant. The very next second, with a thud, he dropped to his knees at the doorway. "Please, Gigi. Give me one more chance. For Ry's sake!"My gaze went cold when I heard Ryan's name on his lips. "So, now you remember Ry?"Rowan parted his lips, but he couldn't make a sound. Just then, soft footsteps sounded behind me. Ryan was standing behind me, clutching his little dinosaur. He looked at Rowan, who was kneeling outside the door, with a terrifyingly calm expression. Like a drowning man clutching at a straw, Rowan reached out to touch him. "Daddy's here, Ry. Please help me convince Mommy. Daddy doesn't want to divorce Mommy!"He thought Ryan would give in. After all, Ryan used to be incredibly attached to him. Whenever he came home, Ryan would rush over, hug his legs, and call out "Daddy" over and over again. However, this time, Ryan only took half a step back behind me. "Mr. Goodwin, go keep your other child company. Don't bother me

Rowan only stopped for a second before making a beeline for the exit. Furious, Megan grabbed the glass of water from the bedside table and hurled it at him. It shattered by the door. Meanwhile, Nelson suddenly began to convulse violently on the hospital bed. His face turned from pale to blue, and a strained, wheezing sound came from his throat. The nurse rushed over. "The patient has laryngeal edema! Call the doctor, quick! Prepare for resuscitation!"Megan's knees buckled from fear, and she collapsed onto the floor. …Rowan rushed to the airport overnight. There were no tickets left for the earliest flight to Ivashire. So, he sat in the airport lobby until dawn.In the meantime, he called me dozens of times and sent me over a hundred messages. "Gigi, I know I messed up.""Where are you? Let me see you just once!""Is Ry okay?""I really didn't mean to hurt you two.""Please just answer the phone!"I didn't read a single one of those messages. When the plane touched

Megan stiffened, and the container of mango in her hand dropped to the floor. The yellow fruit rolled all over the ground. The panic on her face lasted for only a second before she immediately squeezed out tears. "Rowan, I can explain! This is all a misunderstanding—"Rowan rushed over, snatched the remaining mangoes out of her hand, and hurled them on the ground. "A misunderstanding? You knew perfectly well that he's allergic to mangoes, yet you still forced him to eat them? Megan, he's your biological son! Don't you know that severe food allergies can kill someone?"Megan's face went pale from his outburst. Nelson burst into tears on the hospital bed. After hearing the commotion, a nurse rushed in. "You two, stop arguing! The patient's condition is unstable right now!"Rowan stared long and hard at Megan. At that moment, the way he looked at her no longer held any pity, only disgust. Realizing she couldn't fake it anymore, she dried her tears and sneered. "That's right. I did
