JASMINE

As we drove, there was an awkward silence.

Neither of us would say a word the entire journey.

I decided to stare out of the window instead, anything to diffuse my nervousness and the awkwardness of the situation.

The wind lapped in my face as I watched cars whizz past, as the vehicle picked up speed with each passing second.

The hills overlapping and fading into one another.

I thought about Peter.

How I’d left him without so much as an explanation…

And how Adrian was going to make everybody believe that I was moving away.

I swallowed down a lump that had caught in my throat, biting down on my lip, hard, to stop the tears that were welling in my eyes from spilling.

I knew that now, of all times…

Wasn’t the time for waterworks.

I needed to get my head in the game…

Because the sooner I got this God-forsaken chip…

The sooner I would have freedom.

The sooner I could live a normal life again.

The sooner I could go back to Peter, working at the bar…
