Chapter 2

Penulis: Sweetie Moore
I looked at Nick bitterly.

When Ruby's heart acted up, he lost his mind with worry. But when I worked back-to-back overtime until I nearly went into cardiac arrest, all he gave me was a cold look. He even accused me of copying her to get his attention.

The ambulance arrived quickly, and soon Ruby was lying in a hospital bed. Nick gently tucked her in, his eyes filled with a tenderness I had rarely seen.

Without warning, he snatched up the equity agreement and hurled it at me.

"Chloe, you shouldn't have brought this out," he hissed. "You scared Ruby so badly she had an attack!"

I tilted my head, letting the papers graze my ear before hitting the floor.

I knew he was only taking his anger out on me because Ruby was sick.

How ironic. He was always so cold and distant with me, yet Ruby brought out a completely different side of him.

In the past, I would have been furious and jealous. We would have fought and left on terrible terms.

But now, I just felt too drained to care.

"My bad," I said flatly.

Nick raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised.

After a moment, he handed the agreement back to me and finally bothered to explain himself.

"It was just a sip of her drink. She has a heart condition. If I'd refused her in front of everyone, she couldn't have handled it. Don't bring this agreement out again. Let this be the last time."

He stood there looking polished and superior, as if forgiving me was an act of charity.

I knew he was giving me a way to back down. But this time, I didn't want to compromise anymore.

"Is that all?" I asked coldly. "If you're done, I'm leaving."

Nick stared at me for a long moment before finally saying, "I'll send you some money. Go buy yourself a piece of cake."

He took out his phone and started tapping.

A moment later, I got a notification that a transfer of $20 had arrived.

For years, Nick was worried I'd be reckless with money, so he took control of my paychecks and gave me a meager 200-dollar monthly allowance. Every single expense had to be approved by him.

I handled everything from our meals and household bills to all the little things we needed day to day.

Whenever I went over budget and had to ask him for more money, he'd give me a suspicious look that made me feel like I was constantly under a microscope.

Even now, sending me an extra 20 dollars for cake was like pulling teeth for him.

Yet Ruby only had to act sweet, and he'd hand her a credit card and let her spend as she pleased.

When I confronted him about it, he'd just look at me coldly, claiming Ruby needed the money for entertaining clients, then blame me for being needy and dramatic.

With no other choice, I took on side jobs to cover my own expenses. I worked nonstop until it took a toll on my health.

I stared at the number on my phone and couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of it.

Meanwhile, Nick was still talking about how he'd give me a promotion and a raise when the opportunity came.

Without a word, I transferred the $20 back to him.

I didn't need his money, and I certainly didn't care for it anymore.

"Got it," I said calmly, ignoring his rambling as I walked out of the room.

Once outside, I dialed a number I hadn't called in years.

"Hey, Greg. I want to come home."

There was a long silence on the other end.

When my brother finally spoke, his voice was thick with emotion.

"Good. I'm so glad you've finally come to your senses! Mom and Dad have been living abroad all these years, afraid that coming back would stir up painful memories. Go see them."

Back then, my family warned me that Nick came from a poor family and that I'd suffer with him.

They had opposed our relationship from the start. I cut ties with them to be with Nick anyway.

Then Greg told me something shocking.

To keep me from suffering, my family had been quietly backing Nick's company all along. They were actually the biggest investors in the company's upcoming IPO.

As the sun began to set, I hung up the phone with a smile.

As expected, not a single call went through.Nick's face went deathly pale.I glanced at my watch and realized it was already noon. I stood up and straightened my clothes."You should head back. Wasting your time here isn't going to save your company."I turned to leave, but Nick suddenly grabbed my sleeve. "Chloe, please."Those two words seemed to drain every last bit of energy he had left.Without a second thought, I pulled my sleeve free.He didn't chase after me.After that, I never saw Nick again. However, I occasionally saw him in the news. His company had filed for bankruptcy, and he looked utterly haggard, as if he'd aged ten years.A year later, I returned to Gweno with Austin to close a business deal.By then, Austin was my boyfriend. He was gentle, considerate, and supportive. We always had something to talk about, and he truly understood me.Over time, we'd grown closer and fallen in love. When I told him about my past with Nick, he held me close and promised

I frowned and headed inside the building to avoid him, but he was already standing right behind me, grabbing my arm."What? You had the nerve to destroy the brooch that meant so much to us, but you're too scared to face me?" His voice was strangely raspy.I sighed, already getting a headache.I quickly pulled out my phone, texted Austin to ask for the day off, and followed Nick into the cafe."I don't have any money, and I'm not going back with you." I got straight to the point. Nick nearly choked when he heard that. His breathing grew heavier. He was wearing oversized aviator sunglasses that covered half his face, so I couldn't make out his expression.I pointed at his glasses and raised an eyebrow. "Nick, don't you think it's rude to talk to someone while hiding half your face behind those?"He pressed his lips together, hesitated for a moment, then took off the sunglasses. The moment I saw his face, I understood why he'd been wearing them. His eyes were swollen and nearly

The last three words came out in a barely audible whisper.I couldn't help but wonder why he was suddenly backing down, so I asked him outright.Nick immediately tried to defend himself. "Because I love you, Chloe! I'm sorry. I ignored your feelings before. I swear I'll never do it again!""Tell me the truth."He mumbled, "I... Well, we've run into some cash flow problems."So, that was what this was really about.I let out a mocking laugh and deliberately played dumb. "How could that happen? With someone as capable as Ruby, how could the company possibly have any issues?"Nick nearly choked. "Stop with the snide remarks, Chloe. You know the company was like our baby. Yes, I know Ruby isn't as capable as you are. The company really can't do without you. I already apologized, didn't I? What more do you want?"He paused slightly before adding, "Just get your brother to invest in us again. We're completely out of time."So, this was Nick's idea of an apology? He was still as arr

I had indeed forgotten something.I took a couple of steps toward them.Nick looked at me warily. "Chloe, what are you trying to do?"I gave him a faint smirk, grabbed the edge of the table, and flipped it over.Plates and bowls went flying, sending soup and sauces splashing all over them.Nick instinctively shielded Ruby, sparing her the worst of it, but her clothes were still soaked and stained. He wasn't so lucky. Sauce and bits of food covered his face and clothes, leaving him standing there in stunned disbelief. He looked nothing like the polished, put-together man he usually was. That felt amazing. The rest of the staff stood frozen for a few seconds before finally snapping out of it. They scrambled forward to help their boss and clean him up.I turned and walked out.I'd wasted more time than I'd planned, but I still managed to catch my flight. After I landed, I had a long-overdue reunion with my parents.I spent a few days resting at home, but I didn't want to sit

Nick's face went pale instantly the moment he finished speaking. He knew he'd said the wrong thing. But he was too proud to back down, so he dug in and kept arguing with me. "Well, Chloe? Are you going to apologize or not?"I rolled my eyes inwardly. What a joke.Even now, he didn't have the guts to admit we were married. Yet he had the nerve to threaten me with divorce. If this had happened back then, I probably would have been terrified.I'd once dreamed of growing old with Nick, and I'd done everything I could to make that dream come true.Whenever he brought up divorce or threatened to leave, I'd cave instantly. I was too afraid of losing him to risk making him angry. Now? I couldn't care less. In fact, I was relieved. For someone who cared so much about his reputation, having our marriage exposed in front of everyone was probably his worst nightmare.I smiled and said calmly, "Fine. Let's get a divorce then."Nick froze. He'd been expecting me to give in and beg for his

I knew this was a huge concession for him. In all the years I'd known him, he'd never once lowered his pride enough to speak to me like this. What he didn't know was that I'd already made up my mind. Nothing he said could change it.I shook my head and turned to leave.Nick grabbed the glass of red wine beside him and splashed it all over me. A flicker of regret crossed his eyes, as if he couldn't believe he'd actually done it.But he quickly masked it and snapped, "Stop right there. You're not going anywhere until we settle this!"Wine dripped from my hair. I blinked and wiped it from my face. How had I never realized what a terrible temper Nick had?Ruby gasped and immediately snatched up some napkins from the table, rushing over to play the concerned friend."Chloe, are you okay? Nick just speaks without thinking. He only lashed out because he can't bear to lose a talent like you. Why don't you just apologize to him?"Apologize to him? Not a chance.I glanced at the napkin
