Chapter 3

Author: River Snapshot
I couldn't hold back. I swept everything on the desk onto the floor. Betrayal and humiliation flooded through me until I felt almost numb.

Chase and I had grown up together. We'd been best friends who told each other everything.

When we were sixteen, he'd watched Marielle chase after me with everything she had.

I was the top student. Marielle was the "problem kid."

When Chase found out Marielle and I were together, he was dead set against it and went after her every chance he got.

He made a bet with her: she had to make the honor roll before she'd be good enough to date me.

Marielle studied like her life depended on it. Two months later, she actually made it.

When she walked up to me holding her report card, I happily pulled her into my arms.

Marielle hugged me back and shot Chase a defiant look.

His face instantly turned ugly. He couldn't say a word.

Back then, I'd completely missed the disappointment and resentment in his eyes.

After college, Marielle decided to start her own company, but she didn't have enough capital.

She said she wanted to build her own career and be a strong, independent woman, not some man's accessory.

I wanted to make her dream come true. Without telling her, I took out a 500,000 dollars loan and had Chase invest it in her company under his own name.

Chase called me an idiot, but he gave Marielle the money in the end.

From then on, the way Marielle looked at Chase changed.

She always said Chase was her guardian angel. After that, whenever he argued with her, she didn't fight back the way she used to.

To pay off the loan as fast as possible, I volunteered for the overseas assignment in Port Calvane. The conditions there were brutal, but the pay was the best the company offered.

The day I left, I held on to Marielle at the airport so tightly that for a moment I didn't want to go.

But she firmly pried my fingers loose and pushed me toward the gate.

For five years abroad, I thought about Marielle every single day.

She always reassured me, "Weston, your career comes first. Don't throw away a great future for me."

We fought about it more than once.

I'd had a vague sense that she didn't want me to come back.

Sometimes I couldn't help wondering whether she'd found someone else and didn't want to see me.

Every time we fought, I went to Chase to vent.

He'd say, "Weston, don't be stupid. She's never even thought about marrying you!"

I'd thought he was on my side, sticking up for me.

I never realized he was clearing the last obstacle out of his way.

A notification suddenly popped up on my phone. My transfer request had been approved, and my supervisor wanted me to report for duty as soon as possible.

I replied, "Understood," and booked a flight to Wrenmouth.

I never expected that right after I'd dealt with the Knox family, Chase would show up too.He came all the way to Wrenmouth and waited outside my office building to corner me.I hadn't seen him in a while. He'd lost a lot of weight, and his face was white as a sheet."Weston, I'm begging you. Talk to Marielle. You're the only one she listens to."Owen just turned one. This is when he needs both his parents the most. For the sake of all our years as brothers, please help me out!"I looked coldly at this man who'd been driven to the brink of a breakdown."Chase, I've already made it clear to Marielle that we're over. If she wants to divorce you, that's her business. It's got nothing to do with me."I've also told you that whatever we had between us is gone. I'm not going to help you. Leave."Chase clutched my sleeve and begged again. "Weston, I really love Marielle. I don't want a divorce..."Looking at him, all I felt was how absurd it was.Not long ago, Chase had been telling

Before walking over, I'd sworn to myself that I wouldn't get upset. But thinking back on everything, I still teared up in spite of myself.Marielle was crying too. She grabbed my hand and apologized."Weston, it's all my fault. I'll go back and divorce Chase right now. Please, just give me one more chance, okay?"You know how I feel about you. You're the only one I love. What happened with Chase was an accident. I was drunk that night and wasn't thinking straight..."I shook her hand off in disgust and pushed her out into the rain."Marielle, stop pretending to be so devoted. It just makes me sick."Once might've been an accident. But what about after that? Chase had the guts to admit you two slept together plenty of times. You can't even own up to it?"Marielle hurried to deny it. "That's not true! Chase lied to you. It really was only once, and then I got pregnant. If you don't believe me, you can check..."She pulled out her phone to show me proof, but I tossed it back into

I saw Marielle again two days later. The rainy season in Wrenmouth always dragged on forever. I'd barely seen a clear day since I arrived.Marielle stood under an umbrella on the street corner across from my office for hours, still as a statue. She'd been coming for days. Every time she started walking toward me, I got straight into my car and drove off. There was nothing left to say between us, and I didn't want to keep getting tangled up with her.But Marielle was stubborn. She came and waited there every single day.Sometimes she forgot her umbrella and got soaked to the bone. She looked forlorn, like an abandoned child. This time, I didn't run. I walked straight toward her.The moment she saw me, her eyes lit up."Weston, you finally agreed to see me!"A violent gust of wind tore the umbrella from her hand and sent it to the ground. She didn't care. She rushed over and threw her arms around me."I'm sorry, Weston. I really know I was wrong. Punish me however you want,

As soon as her plane landed, Marielle rushed to my office in Port Calvane. Her anniversary gift to me had been a custom diamond ring engraved with our initials.Unfortunately, I'd already flown home early, so I'd never received it.Marielle bought a bouquet of roses and tucked the ring inside.Over the years, she'd begged me to take her back more than once, and she knew exactly how it went.As long as she flew out to my office, brought a gift, apologized sincerely, and swallowed her pride to coax me, I'd always forgive her.Marielle waited outside the building for a long time. Fierce gusts whipped up dust and sand that swept over her. Before long, she was covered head to toe in dirt. But even after the employees had all left for the day, there was still no sign of me.Marielle rushed into the building and grabbed an employee coming down the stairs. Struggling past the language barrier, she asked where I was. After asking five or six people, she finally found out what had happ

After seeing me off, Marielle felt hollow inside. She'd seen me off more times than she could count over these five years, but never once had it been this hard to let me go.That night, Marielle worked out the time difference and eagerly placed a video call. The next second, it was declined. She called again. This time, no one picked up.She immediately switched to a regular call. Same result.Whenever we'd fought before, she'd been the one ignoring my calls while I called over and over. Now it was her turn to know how that worry felt. With no other choice, Marielle sent a message: "Weston, pick up. Don't make me worry."I still didn't reply.Marielle didn't get a moment of real sleep that night. She kept waking up to check her phone, and it woke Owen up too.For the first time, she didn't rush to comfort him. Her eyes stayed glued to her screen, terrified of missing a single message. But even after Owen had cried himself back to sleep, there was still nothing from me.She

  • Ten Years, One Lie   Chapter 6

Chase asked me to meet him at his house. After a night spent pulling myself together, I asked him calmly, "Chase, why?"Chase was gently tending to Owen, who was fast asleep. His lips curled into a smile, but his eyes were cold and mocking."Weston, Marielle is mine. I've never fought you for anything, but her? I'm never letting her go."After you two had that fight, she got completely wasted and cried in my arms. I kissed her... and she didn't push me away."I slammed my hand on the table and pointed at him. "Chase, how could you be this low?"Chase kept going, smug. "And Marielle and I slept together more than once after that."You two have been long-distance for so many years, I've probably slept with her more than you have. Marielle says... you never could satisfy her in bed."I couldn't hold back my rage anymore. I lunged at him and grabbed him by the collar.Chase stumbled back, shielding the crying baby, but my fist still caught him square in the eye.Marielle burst th
