Chapter 2

Author: Lily Young
Katherine said, "Our company anniversary is coming up soon. Gavin's been working hard, so I wanted to buy him a suit."

Nodding, I pulled up the dinner post she had made an hour ago—the one she had forgotten to block me from seeing.

"What about this, Katherine? What do you have to say for yourself?"

Her face instantly darkened with rage. "Are you accusing me of cheating? Yes, I lied about missing rehearsal. That's because I had to take a client out to dinner!

"Not everyone's like you, sitting around all day. All you do is make me go to rehearsals and force this wedding on me.

"Come on. One day off could mean losing million-dollar deals. I'm really busy, okay?"

Katherine's words left me completely speechless. I couldn't help but laugh.

"We've known each other since we were kids. Both our families have their own companies. If you hadn't told me that taking over Jackman Corporation would affect our relationship, do you really think I'd be working some random job at some small company?"

Katherine went pale before flushing with rage.

"So that's how it is? Did I stand in the way of you inheriting the family business? In that case, let's break up!"

With a faint smile, I walked away in the opposite direction. The truth was, I was heartbroken.

Just then, my phone buzzed. I tapped on Gavin Goodwin's message, and it popped up right away.

"I'm really sorry, Mr. Jackman. I wanted to check out a new restaurant. That's why Katherine was late for your wedding rehearsal. Next time, I'll pick another day so she won't miss your 11th wedding rehearsal."

Gavin's message felt like a knife to the heart, making me feel suffocated.

Katherine had gone out with her secretary, but she lied and said she was having dinner with a client instead. How absurd.

Katherine and I were childhood sweethearts. Even our parents had been friends for years. Since childhood, they would always tease us, saying, "You two are the same age, grew up together, and are inseparable. You might as well get married when you grow up."

Back then, I was just a kid and didn't understand what marriage meant. All I knew was that if I married Katherine, she would always stay by my side, and we could keep playing together.

I clapped my hands and cheered joyfully. "Alright then. I want to marry Katherine!"

I even imitated what I saw on TV and wrote a letter, promising I would marry her when I grew up.

By the time I was old enough to understand what marriage meant, my parents would often tease me about the letter.

When I was younger, I was easily flustered, and their teasing embarrassed me so much that I started avoiding Katherine. Once she realized what I was doing, she cornered me and broke down in tears, asking what she had done wrong and why I was giving her the cold shoulder.

Seeing her break down completely melted my heart. For the first time, I felt something inside me begin to stir.

From that day on, I realized I was in love with Katherine. When we were 20, we went from being friends to lovers and started dating.

Over the next few years, after I proposed, I planned our wedding ten times, only for her to postpone it every single time.

By then, Gavin was already working as her secretary.

Katherine spent far more time together with Gavin than she did with me. All this time, I had been fooling myself, believing that it was just for work.

But now, I was done lying to myself.

Just then, my phone started buzzing nonstop, pulling me out of my thoughts. I recomposed myself and took the call.

"Hey, Brandon. What's up?"

"We are throwing a celebratory party for our second newborn this Saturday. Bring your fiancee over for dinner."

I was about to say that I would go alone, but I remembered that not only were Brandon Vance and I best friends, his wife, Layla Kemp, and Katherine were close too.

"Has Layla told Katherine about it?"

"They're talking about it on the phone right now. Huh? Aren't you with her now? Did you two just go back to your own places after the rehearsal?

"It's the perfect time to spice things up. How could you pass that up?" Brandon was perplexed.

I gave a bitter smile. Everyone knew I was a simp for Katherine, so naturally, they would assume that.

I muttered a vague reply before ending the call.

To celebrate that night, I had my friend reserve a bottle of vintage wine.

"You bastard!" Katherine and Gavin started fighting like cats and dogs. Many neighbors gathered around to watch the drama unfold. I turned and left before anyone spotted me. After returning from his business trip, Dad found out about how messy my breakup had been. He immediately made up his mind to send me to the Torsian branch."You've been wasting your life away, and now you've gotten yourself into this mess? Go to Torsia and sort yourself out. Don't come back until you've made something of yourself."Mom agreed wholeheartedly, and the decision was final. I was sent to Torsia. For half a year, I cut off contact with the outside world and focused on tackling problems at work. In the end, I was able to make some progress. Finally, a few days before New Year's, Dad flew to Torsia to bring me home for the holidays. The moment we stepped through the door, we heard someone sobbing in the living room. When I recognized Katherine's voice, I immediately felt a headache coming on.

Katherine cried her heart out, drawing everyone's attention. But all I felt was pure embarrassment. After reactivating my number, she kept bombarding me with phone calls. Brandon was having drinks with me. He looked like he wanted to say something, but stopped himself. "If you have something to say, go ahead." I knew he wanted to speak up for Katherine. Even though I didn't really want to hear it, I still wanted to know what he had to say."Mrs. Winston reached out to me yesterday. She was trying to find out what happened between you and Katherine in a roundabout way. I could tell she was really worried, so I told her the truth."I downed the glass of wine and looked up at Brandon. "You want me to check on Katherine. You don't want Mrs. Winston to panic and do something reckless."Before I finished speaking, Mrs. Winston's call came through. Brandon knew my family was close with the Winstons, and I didn't want to take the call, so he said, "Answer it. Talk things out with Mr

Mom stayed silent for a long time. She kept wanting to ask me something, but all she said was, "I'll let you young people sort out your own problems."But there's one thing—if I find out that you cheated on Katherine and caused your falling out, I'll never forgive you."In front of my parents, Katherine had always been cheerful and well-behaved. Because of that, they always assumed I was the one at fault whenever we had a disagreement."Don't worry. Enjoy your vacation." After ending the call, I dragged Brandon to a pool hall. He knew I was in a good mood after getting Mom's reassurance and wanted to let off some steam. After taking me to get my old number reactivated, he brought me to the pool hall. However, luck wasn't on our side that day. We had only finished our first game when we ran into Gavin, who was just arriving for his shift in his uniform."Oh? Gavin, right? It's only been half a month. How did you already end up like this?"He gritted his teeth and walked over to

I didn't know what to say, so I lied to Mom and told her that there was a jewelry auction in Torsia. Mom wasn't into handbags or designer clothes, but she absolutely adored jewelry. As expected, she was delighted by my answer and praised me for being so thoughtful. I sighed in relief, knowing that I had Mom fooled for now. As expected, after searching everywhere for me and coming up with nothing, Katherine went to my family's home. I heard from the maids that she didn't say why she was there. She only said that she hadn't seen my parents in a long time and wanted to catch up. I wasn't surprised. Katherine might be crazy, but she wouldn't dare cause a scene in front of my parents. After all, she had cheated on me. If things blew up, she would only be the one at fault. After a few days of causing trouble, Katherine finally quieted down. Just as I thought she was done with her manic episode, she rushed to Brandon's house and sobbed her heart out, begging him and Layla to pass on

By the time I realized what was going on, Katherine had me trapped in my own room, and I couldn't leave. She banged on the door from outside, yelling, "Edison, I know you're in there. Why are you hiding from me? "You don't have the guts to face me, do you? If you've got something to tell me, come out here and say it to my face!"Through the peephole, I saw her face twisted in rage, and other guests on the same floor coming out of their rooms to see what was going on.How embarrassing. I furrowed my brows in annoyance and reached for my phone to call the front desk.Soon, a hotel staff member came to handle her. "Miss, you're disturbing our guests. Please leave right now."Perhaps the staff member's words snapped Katherine out of her frenzy. Or maybe she was a little embarrassed when she noticed that many people had gathered to watch her cause a scene. Just as I was about to call the police and have her kicked out of the hotel, she suddenly stopped banging on the door. She smo

  • Tenth Delayed Wedding: I Finally Set You Free   Chapter 5

I ended the call right away and blocked Katherine's number. I even deleted everything related to her on my phone and took down the social media account documenting our relationship. Worried that I might have missed something, I decided to factory-reset my phone. When I turned it back on and saw a clean home screen, I finally felt at ease. I booked a 1:00 pm flight to Bawton. As soon as I landed, before I could even look for Brandon, who was supposed to pick me up, I heard a commotion nearby and caught a voice that sounded unmistakably like Katherine. I squeezed through the crowd and saw it was really her.Katherine got in Brandon's way and asked, "Edison must've kept in touch with you. Tell me—where is he?"Katherine had yanked on Brandon's shirt until it tore, so he didn't dare push her away too hard. He could only keep his shirt from tearing further, looking at her helplessly."I really don't know. Edison hasn't reached out to me.""Impossible! I'm his girlfriend. Do you real
