Chapter 1

The car was deathly silent, but the ringing in my ears kept getting louder.

A voice kept screaming at me to jump.

I dug my fingernails into my palms until they went numb.

The moment I got home and closed the front door, my mom, Melanie Larson, slammed her purse onto the coffee table.

"Did you do that on purpose? The clerk asked you one question, and you immediately agreed that we should get divorced.

"How am I supposed to show my face outside after that?"

I lowered my voice. "I was just answering the question."

"So, you think you’re too good for us now? You think you can just ignore everything I say?

"You make it sound so easy. If we get divorced, who’s going to pay your college tuition and living expenses?" She pointed at me, her voice rising with anger.

"You've always been like this. You act all sweet and obedient until it matters, then you deliberately go against us. You always know exactly what to say to hurt people. You’re just like your father."

"Don't blame everything on me! But your mother has a point. We've fought for all these years without splitting up, and who was it all for?

"We stayed together to give you a complete family!"

My dad, John Larson, lit a cigarette. The smoke crept into my throat, and my stomach immediately clenched.

He exhaled and sneered. "We wasted eighteen years raising you. I was finally in line for a promotion, and you couldn't keep your mouth shut. You had to humiliate me in front of everyone at the county clerk's office."

"I didn't humiliate you."

"Then why did you say you wanted us to get divorced?" He tapped the table, sending cigarette ash onto the tablecloth. "Will you not be happy until you tear this family apart?"

I stared at the calendar on the wall and said nothing.

For ten years, whenever my parents fought and threatened to divorce, I was caught between them.

Mom always said, "If it weren't for you, I would've left him years ago."

Dad always said, "I never got to go anywhere or do anything because I had to raise you."

Even after they made up, those were the first things they said to me.

"It’s my birthday today." I looked up and spoke softly. "Can you please stop fighting?"

Mom froze for a moment, then her expression hardened with anger.

"You pressured your own parents to get divorced, and now you expect us to celebrate your birthday? Who do you think you are, talking back to me like that?"

Dad grabbed my backpack and threw it outside.

"Get out! Stop standing there and giving us attitude."

My paternal grandmother, Sheila Larson, suddenly shoved the door open, sending the shopping bags in her hands crashing to the floor. She stormed straight toward me and jabbed a finger hard against my forehead.

"You've been nothing but bad luck since the day you were born! Every time your father missed out on a promotion, wasn't it because you caused him trouble?"

Before I could respond, my maternal grandmother, Kelly White, hurried in behind her, her face twisted with anger.

"Your mother nearly died giving birth to you! Is this how you repay her for everything she sacrificed? Apologize to her right now!"

"I didn't do anything wrong today."

"You still dare to say that?"

Grandma Kelly raised her hand and slapped me across the face.

"Your mother lost her job because she had to take care of you, didn't she?"

Once, when I was ten, I hid in the closet and listened to my parents smashing things.

I called for Grandma Sheila, but she said grown-ups were allowed to argue and children should keep their mouths shut.

I called for Grandma Kelly, but she said I should know better than to make my mother's life harder.

That night, no one opened the closet door.

Grandma Kelly grabbed my arm and yanked me toward her.

"Are you going to apologize or not?"

I stumbled into the corner of the table. Pain shot through me, tightening my throat, and tears spilled uncontrollably down my cheeks.

"Mom, could you please make me something to eat today?"

"You still have the nerve to ask for food? If you’re old enough to stir up trouble in this family, then you’re old enough to support yourself!"

Mom and Grandma Kelly shoved me toward the door from either side. My hand scraped against the doorknob, and a sharp sting ran across my skin.

The door locked behind me.

I heard someone moving chairs inside. Then Mom said, "Let’s have a nice family dinner tonight."

Dad chimed in, "Forget about her. It’ll be more peaceful with one less person around."

I leaned against the wall and listened as they enjoyed themselves together.

As long as I was not there, it was as if none of their fights had ever happened.

If everything was my fault, then maybe I should just leave.

Grandma Kelly sat against the wall, covering her ears as she shouted, "Stop it! She's already dead!"Samuel took out his phone and pressed play.Mom's voice came through the speakers. "Of course she should give me the money she earns. I raised her, so she owes me for it."Another recording played immediately afterward.Dad's voice filled the hall. "If she really dares to kill herself, she can go die somewhere far away. I don't need her causing me more trouble."Mom reached for the phone, but Samuel stepped back.Whispers spread through the crowd. Someone pointed at Dad and demanded angrily, "How can someone like him be allowed to hold public office?"Another person pulled out a phone to record everything. "Post those recordings online. Let everyone hear what these people are really like!"Dad sat on the steps, clutching the university acceptance letter to his chest.Rotten vegetables and plastic water bottles landed near his feet, but he did not look up.Mom kept murmuring th

Our neighbor Zara immediately snapped, "Those burns on her hands came from when you threw hot coffee at her. The hallway security footage is still there."Dad suddenly whirled on Mom."Why didn’t you take her to the hospital?"Mom shot back, "Didn't you say she was faking it, too?""I told you to take her to the hospital!""And last night, you told her to go die somewhere else!"Dad raised his hand as if to hit her, but an officer stepped in and stopped him.Grandma Sheila hurried forward to intervene."Raising a child costs money! She’s the one who failed to live up to expectations. You can’t blame us for everything!"Zara held up her phone and pulled up the financial assistance records."The application clearly states that Whitney was seriously ill and needed financial assistance, but the money ended up in your pockets."You used her assistance money to gamble and buy cigarettes, and now you still dare to claim you did nothing wrong?"Grandma Sheila opened her mouth, then

My spirit stood beside them. For all those years, no one had ever seen the words written on those pages. Now that someone was finally reading them aloud, I was not as heartbroken as I had imagined I would be.The officer put the three diaries back into the metal box. Reaching all the way to the bottom, he pulled out a photocopied document."There’s also a bank card here." He placed it beside the diaries and turned to Mom. "The account is under Melanie Larson's name. Can you explain who deposited the $24,000 in this account?""$24,000?" Mom stared at the card, her fingers frozen in midair. "I don't know."The officer opened a notarized document."Although the account is in your name, the transaction records show that over the past three years, the only deposits came from Whitney's jobs at a fast-food restaurant and a logistics center."She was under eighteen and couldn't open a bank account of her own, so she used your name to open this one."Dad raised his head."Where did she

Inside the metal box were three diaries. Each was wrapped in a plastic cover, and the corners were worn. The officer picked up the first diary and began to read."When I was eight, Dad failed to get promoted. He came home and smashed Mom's mirror."Mom slapped me three times and said I had ruined her life. She said she would never have lost her job if she hadn't given birth to me."Mom jerked her head up."How could she remember things like that?"The officer continued reading."I used the money meant for breakfast to buy bandages and stuck them over the broken mirror."Mom and Dad made up."They said they wouldn't get divorced today, for my sake."All I had to do was get hit, and they'd stay together."Dad's cigarette fell to the floor.Mom reached for the diary. "Stop reading that!"The officer took a step back."These are the deceased's personal belongings.""Everything she wrote is a lie." Mom clenched her fingers. Mom opened the door a crack and frowned."Who comes looking for someone this early?""Are Whitney's parents home?"She pulled the door wider. "She isn't here. Go look for her at school. Don't come here first thing in the morning and disturb the neighbors."Dad walked out of the living room, a cigarette still between his fingers."What is this about?"The officer showed them his badge."A young woman was found dead near the abandoned water tower in Zephyr City. Based on her student ID and phone information, we believe she may be Whitney. We need the family to come down to the hospital for formal identification."Mom tightened her grip on the doorframe. A few seconds later, she suddenly laughed."Is she putting on another act?"The officer looked up. "What do you mean?""She threw a tantrum last night. She said she wanted to die and go to the hospital."Mom waved a hand dismissively."She’s been saying things like that since she was little. She just wants to force us to give
