Chapter 3

作者: Blue Lemon
Just after dawn, the storage room door was kicked open.

"Get up and make breakfast. Stop pretending you’re dead." Dad frowned. "You’re eighteen years old. What kind of person lies around all day?"

I pushed myself up from the mattress, my temples throbbing with every heartbeat.

Grandma Sheila heard the commotion and came in. Her eyes fell on the bottle of antidepressants in my hand. She snatched it away and tossed it into the trash can.

I lunged after it. "That’s my medication!"

"What do you need medication for? Doesn’t this family already have enough trouble?

"Ever since you started taking those pills, nothing in this house has gone right!"

Her anger grew as she pointed a finger at my nose.

"Your father failed to get promoted again this year because he has to deal with a sickly daughter like you!"

"I can’t stop taking my medication!" I cried.

"How dare you lecture me!" She pointed at the trash can. "Don't even think about fishing it out of there."

Mom's voice came from the living room.

"John, just look at the wonderful daughter you raised. She’s eighteen, yet she can’t even make breakfast."

Dad grabbed me by the collar and dragged me into the living room.

"You gave birth to this little troublemaker, so you deal with her! Stop blaming me for everything!"

Mom snatched the TV remote off the table and hurled it at him.

"She isn't just my child!

"You were the one who insisted on having her!

"And now you’re blaming me?"

"If it weren't for her, I would've been transferred to the city center years ago instead of being stuck here!"

"You’re the one who isn't good enough at your job! Why take it out on your child?"

Their voices rose and fell, closing in on me until I could barely breathe.

Grandma Kelly came over and grabbed my arm.

"Stop wasting your time here. Go find a job and earn some money to help support the family.

"Your parents haven't had an easy time raising you. The least you can do is show some sense!" Grandma Kelly added.

I shook my head. "I need to go to the hospital."

"The hospital again?" Grandma Kelly's voice turned icy. "What else can you do besides spend money?"

I gripped the edge of the table. My fingertips were so cold that I could barely feel them.

"Could I borrow $200? I need to go to the emergency room."

Dad shot me a disapproving look. "Why do you always have to make everything such a big deal? What do you need the emergency room for when there’s nothing wrong with you?"

"I really can’t take it anymore."

"Then stop trying. Do you think anyone has time to put on a show with you?"

I swallowed the metallic taste of blood rising in my throat.

"Dad, I'm not pretending."

Mom folded her arms and let out a mocking laugh.

"You've always pulled stunts like this. Cry a little, and everyone has to drop everything to fuss over you. Now that your scholarship money is gone, you are looking for another excuse to get money out of us?"

She pointed toward the door.

"Go get a job. Don't come back until you've earned that $200."

Grandma Sheila stepped in front of me.

"If you don't earn that money today, you aren't coming back inside."

I stared at the bottle of medication in the trash, my fingers trembling slightly.

"Give me my medicine back."

"Get out."

The door slammed shut behind me. Inside, they were still arguing over who was responsible for me.

I reached into the inner pocket of my backpack and pulled out $37. I squeezed the bills in my palm until their edges hurt.

At the hospital registration desk, a staff member asked, "Where’s your family?"

"I don't have anyone," I replied.

She handed me a numbered ticket.

In the examination room, the doctor finished reviewing my test results and looked at me.

"How long has it been since you last ate properly?"

"I can’t remember."

"Are you able to sleep at night?" the doctor asked.

"No."

"Have you been hearing voices that other people cannot hear?"

I stared at the corner of the desk.

"Yes."

The doctor fell silent for a few seconds, then picked up a pen and wrote several lines on a sheet of paper.

"You have severe depression with somatic symptoms. You need an inpatient evaluation, and a family member should accompany you to your follow-up appointments."

I clutched the hem of my shirt. "My parents won't come."

"Take this diagnosis report home for now." The doctor slid the paper toward me. "Let them know what’s happening."

I picked it up, the edge digging into the pad of my finger.

Outside the hospital, rain pattered against my umbrella. Just then, my phone rang. Mom's name appeared on the screen.

I looked at them."I'm giving back the ten years of marriage you forced me to carry on my shoulders."Mom shook her head. "No. That's not how it is.""I will never forgive you."The white light spread from behind me. My voice drifted down over their heads."Your marriage is yours to deal with. Grandma Kelly sat against the wall, covering her ears as she shouted, "Stop it! She's already dead!"Samuel took out his phone and pressed play.Mom's voice came through the speakers. "Of course she should give me the money she earns. I raised her, so she owes me for it."Another recording played immediately afterward.Dad's voice filled the hall. "If she really dares to kill herself, she can go die somewhere far away. I don't need her causing me more trouble."Mom reached for the phone, but Samuel stepped back.Whispers spread through the crowd. Someone pointed at Dad and demanded angrily, "How can someone like him be allowed to hold public office?"Another person pulled out a phone to record everything. "Post those recordings online. Let everyone hear what these people are really like!"Dad sat on the steps, clutching the university acceptance letter to his chest.Rotten vegetables and plastic water bottles landed near his feet, but he did not look up.Mom kept murmuring th

Our neighbor Zara immediately snapped, "Those burns on her hands came from when you threw hot coffee at her. The hallway security footage is still there."Dad suddenly whirled on Mom."Why didn’t you take her to the hospital?"Mom shot back, "Didn't you say she was faking it, too?""I told you to take her to the hospital!""And last night, you told her to go die somewhere else!"Dad raised his hand as if to hit her, but an officer stepped in and stopped him.Grandma Sheila hurried forward to intervene."Raising a child costs money! She’s the one who failed to live up to expectations. You can’t blame us for everything!"Zara held up her phone and pulled up the financial assistance records."The application clearly states that Whitney was seriously ill and needed financial assistance, but the money ended up in your pockets."You used her assistance money to gamble and buy cigarettes, and now you still dare to claim you did nothing wrong?"Grandma Sheila opened her mouth, then

My spirit stood beside them. For all those years, no one had ever seen the words written on those pages. Now that someone was finally reading them aloud, I was not as heartbroken as I had imagined I would be.The officer put the three diaries back into the metal box. Reaching all the way to the bottom, he pulled out a photocopied document."There’s also a bank card here." He placed it beside the diaries and turned to Mom. "The account is under Melanie Larson's name. Can you explain who deposited the $24,000 in this account?""$24,000?" Mom stared at the card, her fingers frozen in midair. "I don't know."The officer opened a notarized document."Although the account is in your name, the transaction records show that over the past three years, the only deposits came from Whitney's jobs at a fast-food restaurant and a logistics center."She was under eighteen and couldn't open a bank account of her own, so she used your name to open this one."Dad raised his head."Where did she

Inside the metal box were three diaries. Each was wrapped in a plastic cover, and the corners were worn. The officer picked up the first diary and began to read."When I was eight, Dad failed to get promoted. He came home and smashed Mom's mirror."Mom slapped me three times and said I had ruined her life. She said she would never have lost her job if she hadn't given birth to me."Mom jerked her head up."How could she remember things like that?"The officer continued reading."I used the money meant for breakfast to buy bandages and stuck them over the broken mirror."Mom and Dad made up."They said they wouldn't get divorced today, for my sake."All I had to do was get hit, and they'd stay together."Dad's cigarette fell to the floor.Mom reached for the diary. "Stop reading that!"The officer took a step back."These are the deceased's personal belongings.""Everything she wrote is a lie." Mom clenched her fingers. "What does an eight-year-old know?"The officer tur

Mom opened the door a crack and frowned."Who comes looking for someone this early?""Are Whitney's parents home?"She pulled the door wider. "She isn't here. Go look for her at school. Don't come here first thing in the morning and disturb the neighbors."Dad walked out of the living room, a cigarette still between his fingers."What is this about?"The officer showed them his badge."A young woman was found dead near the abandoned water tower in Zephyr City. Based on her student ID and phone information, we believe she may be Whitney. We need the family to come down to the hospital for formal identification."Mom tightened her grip on the doorframe. A few seconds later, she suddenly laughed."Is she putting on another act?"The officer looked up. "What do you mean?""She threw a tantrum last night. She said she wanted to die and go to the hospital."Mom waved a hand dismissively."She’s been saying things like that since she was little. She just wants to force us to give
