Chapter 4

作者: Blue Lemon
I did not answer.

Rainwater trickled down the diagnosis report, soaking one corner of the doctor's handwriting.

When I got home, I heard things being smashed inside.

"That’s your debt! You borrowed the money, so you pay it back yourself!"

Dad roared, "If you didn't spend all your time gambling, would this family be drowning in debt?"

I pushed open the door. Mom and Dad turned toward me at the same time.

Mom glared at me.

"Where have you been? I called you, and you pretended you couldn't hear me?"

I clutched the diagnosis report and said nothing.

"Oh, so now you’re going to give us attitude?" She flung the coffee in her cup straight at me. The scalding liquid splashed across my chest, and my skin went numb almost instantly. "You enjoy watching us fight, do you?"

Dad grabbed my arm. "Can’t you at least say hello when you walk through the door?"

He yanked me so hard that I crashed into the coffee table. A sharp cramp twisted through my abdomen, and the paper slipped from my hand.

Mom bent down and picked up the diagnosis report, glancing at it casually.

"Severe depression?"

She held the paper up closer to her face, then suddenly let out a scornful laugh.

"Do you have such a hard life that you need to make yourself out to be some delicate little princess? How could you possibly have a disease like this?"

I reached for the paper. "Give it back."

Right in front of me, she tore the diagnosis report in half.

"You have too much free time on your hands. That’s why you sit around imagining things all day. If you have so much time to waste thinking about nonsense, why not find something useful to do?"

She kept tearing the paper until it was reduced to scraps.

"The doctor said I need to be hospitalized," I told her.

"And who’s going to pay for that?"

"We just transferred the $8,000 into my account, and now you want to use it for a hospital stay. Did you plan this all along?"

"That money was from my school," I protested.

"You still dare to bring up money?" She pointed at me. "Do you have any idea how much we've spent raising you for eighteen years?"

Dad released my arm and said calmly, "She just doesn't want to help pay off the family debt. She’s pretending to be sick to get sympathy."

Grandma Sheila stood nearby and slammed her palm against the table.

"She’s just like you, Melanie. Nothing but trash, right down to the bone! If she were really that sick, how could she keep coming in first at school?"

The moment Grandma Kelly heard that, she clutched her chest and burst into tears.

"John, you’re too useless to support your family, and now you've driven your daughter to this! The Larson family is going to destroy itself sooner or later!"

"Shut up!" Dad spun around. "If your daughter hadn't taught her to talk back all the time, would she be acting like this?"

"And who are you blaming now?"

All four of them started shouting at one another again. Their shoes ground the torn pieces of my diagnosis report into the spilled coffee.

I crouched down and picked up a small scrap of paper. Only half a line of text remained.

"Dad. Mom."

No one looked at me.

I grabbed the hem of Mom's pants.

"I really can’t take it anymore. I want to die so badly. Please, will you take me to the hospital?"

She looked down at me and gave a harsh laugh.

"If you’re so miserable, why don’t you just go die?"

The room suddenly fell silent. The sharp ringing in my ears stopped.

Dad turned his face away and lowered his voice.

"If you really want to die, do it somewhere else! Don't turn this house into a haunted place!"

I let go of Mom's pants, but she kept yelling.

"If you die, your father and I will get divorced. Without you, we could have a better life than anyone else."

I placed the scraps of paper on the table.

"I understand."

John frowned.

"What are you trying to pull now?"

"Nothing."

I picked up my backpack and walked out of the house.

Not one person came after me.

When I was eight, Mom and Dad took me to see the old, abandoned water tower in Zephyr City, each holding one of my hands.

That day, they told me that once I grew up, they would no longer have to force themselves to stay married for my sake.

Now I stood beneath the old water tower, pouring the sleeping pills I always carried with me into my palm.

The pills caught in my throat. I swallowed several times until the ringing in my ears finally faded.

Mom, Dad, no one would be keeping you together anymore.

You can get divorced now.

At six in the morning, a police car pulled up outside the Larson family's apartment building.

An officer pounded hard on the security door.

"Family of Whitney Larson, open the door immediately!"

I looked at them."I'm giving back the ten years of marriage you forced me to carry on my shoulders."Mom shook her head. "No. That's not how it is.""I will never forgive you."The white light spread from behind me. My voice drifted down over their heads."Your marriage is yours to deal with. End it yourselves."My figure slowly faded before their eyes.Mom lunged forward, but her hands met only air. Someone eventually tore it down, crumpled it into a ball, and shoved it into his hands. Grandma Kelly sat against the wall, covering her ears as she shouted, "Stop it! She's already dead!"Samuel took out his phone and pressed play.Mom's voice came through the speakers. "Of course she should give me the money she earns. I raised her, so she owes me for it."Another recording played immediately afterward.Dad's voice filled the hall. "If she really dares to kill herself, she can go die somewhere far away. I don't need her causing me more trouble."Mom reached for the phone, but Samuel stepped back.Whispers spread through the crowd. Someone pointed at Dad and demanded angrily, "How can someone like him be allowed to hold public office?"Another person pulled out a phone to record everything. "Post those recordings online. Let everyone hear what these people are really like!"Dad sat on the steps, clutching the university acceptance letter to his chest.Rotten vegetables and plastic water bottles landed near his feet, but he did not look up.Mom kept murmuring th

Our neighbor Zara immediately snapped, "Those burns on her hands came from when you threw hot coffee at her. The hallway security footage is still there."Dad suddenly whirled on Mom."Why didn’t you take her to the hospital?"Mom shot back, "Didn't you say she was faking it, too?""I told you to take her to the hospital!""And last night, you told her to go die somewhere else!"Dad raised his hand as if to hit her, but an officer stepped in and stopped him.Grandma Sheila hurried forward to intervene."Raising a child costs money! She’s the one who failed to live up to expectations. You can’t blame us for everything!"Zara held up her phone and pulled up the financial assistance records."The application clearly states that Whitney was seriously ill and needed financial assistance, but the money ended up in your pockets."You used her assistance money to gamble and buy cigarettes, and now you still dare to claim you did nothing wrong?"Grandma Sheila opened her mouth, then

My spirit stood beside them. For all those years, no one had ever seen the words written on those pages. Now that someone was finally reading them aloud, I was not as heartbroken as I had imagined I would be.The officer put the three diaries back into the metal box. Reaching all the way to the bottom, he pulled out a photocopied document."There’s also a bank card here." He placed it beside the diaries and turned to Mom. "The account is under Melanie Larson's name. Can you explain who deposited the $24,000 in this account?""$24,000?" Mom stared at the card, her fingers frozen in midair. "I don't know."The officer opened a notarized document."Although the account is in your name, the transaction records show that over the past three years, the only deposits came from Whitney's jobs at a fast-food restaurant and a logistics center."She was under eighteen and couldn't open a bank account of her own, so she used your name to open this one."Dad raised his head."Where did she

Inside the metal box were three diaries. Each was wrapped in a plastic cover, and the corners were worn. The officer picked up the first diary and began to read."When I was eight, Dad failed to get promoted. He came home and smashed Mom's mirror."Mom slapped me three times and said I had ruined her life. She said she would never have lost her job if she hadn't given birth to me."Mom jerked her head up."How could she remember things like that?"The officer continued reading."I used the money meant for breakfast to buy bandages and stuck them over the broken mirror."Mom and Dad made up."They said they wouldn't get divorced today, for my sake."All I had to do was get hit, and they'd stay together."Dad's cigarette fell to the floor.Mom reached for the diary. "Stop reading that!"The officer took a step back."These are the deceased's personal belongings.""Everything she wrote is a lie." Mom clenched her fingers. "What does an eight-year-old know?"The officer tur

Mom opened the door a crack and frowned."Who comes looking for someone this early?""Are Whitney's parents home?"She pulled the door wider. "She isn't here. Go look for her at school. Don't come here first thing in the morning and disturb the neighbors."Dad walked out of the living room, a cigarette still between his fingers."What is this about?"The officer showed them his badge."A young woman was found dead near the abandoned water tower in Zephyr City. Based on her student ID and phone information, we believe she may be Whitney. We need the family to come down to the hospital for formal identification."Mom tightened her grip on the doorframe. A few seconds later, she suddenly laughed."Is she putting on another act?"The officer looked up. "What do you mean?""She threw a tantrum last night. She said she wanted to die and go to the hospital."Mom waved a hand dismissively."She’s been saying things like that since she was little. She just wants to force us to give
