Chapter 2

Author: Liquid Admiration
The funeral attendees who knew Gabriel were all shocked that he wasn't present. Gabriel was known for loving his daughter dearly. They called his number, but only I knew that he'd never answer any of these calls.

Sure enough, Gabriel didn't once turn up at the funeral, even after it came to an end.

I held back the sorrow in my heart and held Annabelle's cold, lifeless hand one last time.

Maybe it was a good thing that Gabriel wasn't here to interrupt Annabelle's funeral. He was a heartless, good-for-nothing monster, after all…

Right before Annabelle was laid to rest in the ground, a cemetery staff member suddenly ran over to me.

He looked incredibly upset as he clutched my hand and said in a trembling voice, "Something bad's happened, Ms. Vaughn! Someone is causing trouble at the plot you chose for your daughter's burial!"

It felt like a jolt of lightning had struck me.

I immediately stumbled over to the cemetery plot. The moment I arrived, I saw Suzanne standing there, gesturing and yelling at the staff members.

"What is this? I've already had a medium determine that this burial plot is the best one for my dog, Oscar. If any of you interfere with Oscar's burial, you're dead meat!"

The staff members looked helpless as they explained, "I'm so sorry, miss. Someone's already reserved this burial plot. Plus, it's only for human burials. It wouldn't be appropriate for your dog to be buried here."

"It's not up to you to decide what's appropriate or not. I want you to call whoever it was that reserved this plot and have that person come over right now," Gabriel said coldly to the staff while consoling Suzanne. "We can compensate that person for this plot."

He then snapped. "Well? What are you waiting for? Get me your manager!"

She grew bolder with him backing her up.

She curled up in his arms before slapping one of the staff members. "Didn't you hear us? Either let us speak to your manager, or call the person who reserved this plot over! Or else…"

"I reserved this plot," I said. Slowly walking out of the crowd, I headed toward Suzanne and Gabriel.

Gabriel shoved her out of his arms the moment he saw me before coming toward me.

I saw the faint panic in his eyes as our gazes met.

"What are you doing here in the cemetery, Rhea? Why aren't you looking after Annabelle in the hospital? Oh, did you just say you reserved this burial plot? Why do you need it?"

I looked at Gabriel, forcing back the tears that threatened to fall from my eyes. "How dare you still mention Annabelle at this point? This burial plot is for her…"

"Gabe, come and take a look at Robby! Why does he look so pale?" Suzanne cried out suddenly.

The panic in Gabriel's eyes dissipated instantly. He went over to Robert Quinn—that would be Suzanne's son—without hesitation.

While checking up on Robert, Gabriel gently consoled the boy. "Don't be scared, Robby. I'm here."

Suzanne smiled smugly before slowly walking toward me. Though she had a provocative look in her eyes, she still spoke in a faux apologetic tone.

"I'm so sorry, Rhea. I didn't know you'd reserved this burial plot. You don't look like you need it now, so why don't you let Oscar have it?

"Oscar sadly passed away after eating something that it shouldn't have had the other day. Look—even Robby is so upset that he's gone pale."

"Scram!" I spat out.

Seconds later, Suzanne's loud and theatrical sobs filled the air.

Gabriel instantly straightened up and marched over.

There was a coldness in his tone that I'd never heard before as he said, "I know you're upset about what happened with Annabelle, but that had nothing to do with Suzanne. You saw how pale Robert was. Don't you have any sense of empathy, being a mother yourself?"

Turning to the staff members, he instructed, "My wife is forgoing her reservation of this burial plot and letting Ms. Byron have it instead. Go and handle—"

"No! Get the hell away from here, Gabriel Turner! Take your whore and that little bastard of yours and leave!" I snarled.

Gabriel slapped me harshly across the face right after I spoke. "That's enough, Rhea! I've tolerated your antics for long enough!"

Suzanne was deeply frightened by all the rage directed at her. She fell to her knees while gazing at Annabelle's urn, repeatedly apologizing while her legs trembled beneath her."I'm so sorry, Anna. It's all my fault. Please forgive me. Please don't blame me for what happened—your father is the one at fault. He's a heartless man and didn't deserve you…"I only called your father. I swear, I didn't force him to leave. He's the one who insisted on coming over. He's also the one who took away that heart from you. Please forgive me, Anna…"You can also blame my son, Robert, too. He lied to your father…"Suzanne's words shocked everyone present. She had gladly tossed her child to the wolves to evade responsibility.Gabriel glared at Suzanne, his rage overcoming him. Only 30 seconds had passed by the time Tyler returned with a syringe of anesthesia. However, Annabelle's blood had drenched the operating table. What followed was footage of him stumbling out of the room to call me over. The duration of the video was less than half an hour. It meant that The entire video footage was less than half an hour. This meant that Dr. Gabriel Turner—known publicly for being an incredibly loving father to his daughter—had only been by her side for less than half an hour when she was in critical condition. He had abandoned his own daughter—all because Suzanne, one of his students, had asked him to do so in a phone call.I was trembling with rage after the video ended. However, I knew that there was something more important to complete right now, hence I composed myself and switched the phone off.Ignoring Gabriel, whose face was as pale as a sheet, I turned to address the media reporters."I know Gabriel hired every single one of you to see my family emba

Gabriel was focused on the surgery for some time in the video before a ringtone abruptly interrupted him. He continued performing the surgery while giving Tyler instructions."Check who the caller is. If it's Rhea, you can just ignore her…"Tyler glanced at the caller ID on Gabriel's phone screen before saying quietly, "It's Ms. Byron, sir…"Before Tyler could finish speaking, Gabriel set his scalpel down and snapped, "What are you waiting for? Hurry up and answer it then!"Tyler glanced at Annabelle on the operating table. He hesitated briefly before answering the call.Suzanne sounded like she'd been sobbing as she spoke through the phone. "Gabriel, are you sure Robby was misdiagnosed? I'm still really worried. "Robby kept on saying he felt unwell when he woke up earlier today. Why don't you come over and take a look at him…""Don't worry, Suzanne. I'm sure I didn't read the report wrongly. Robby is healthy as a horse…""Why are you being so cruel, Gabriel? Do you not care a

Gabriel grew frantic. He hurried over, gazing at the urn as he addressed Dad in a trembling voice."You accused me of killing Anna, Dad. But Rhea sent me a video of Anna yesterday. Robby even said he'd chatted with Anna the day before!"I looked at Gabriel before opening up the text conversation I had with him yesterday. Then, I shoved it in his face. "Read carefully and tell me when this video was dated!"We were approaching the end of spring now. However, Anna was still in her winter clothes. He would've noticed this had he paid more attention to the video. Heck, there was a possibility that he did not click on the video and watch it.Gabriel's eyes widened as he stared at the video. His face turned deathly pale. Sensing something was gravely wrong, he swiftly turned and grabbed Robert's arm."Didn't you tell me you chatted with Anna two nights ago? Were you lying to me?" Gabriel snapped.Robert instantly burst into tears, frightened by Gabriel's harsh tone. Suzanne quickly w

Suzanne was stunned upon hearing my words.Meanwhile, Gabriel leapt off the stage and ran over to grab me by the collar."What is this bullshit that you're saying? Anna will be here soon, you bitch! Once Anna's here, she'll personally tell me that she loves me!" he yelled hysterically at me.Countless camera flashes, directed right at the stage, lit up the room.Gabriel shook me violently, an expression of sheer distress on his face. "I want to see Anna right now! Hurry up and call her! I want to speak to my daughter right now!"A helicopter's droning immediately rang out from above us the moment he finished speaking.…Seconds later, Dad arrived with an urn in his hands. He said, "Your beloved daughter is here."Gabriel slowly looked at the urn in Dad's hands. He reached out to touch it but quickly withdrew his hand. In displeasure, he commented, "Dad, you're Anna's grandfather. Even if you want to prank me, it still wouldn't be appropriate to make light of Anna's life. Don'

Gabriel returned home late that night, utterly exhausted. He hadn't wanted to at first, but for some reason, he'd been feeling weird after seeing Rhea's behavior today.Gabriel opened the door, saying. "I'm home, Rhea."That uneasy feeling in his chest grew stronger as he saw that the room was pitch black. "Rhea?"Rhea wasn't in their bedroom. Even her clothes in the wardrobe had disappeared too, so where had she gone?Gabriel went to the living room with furrowed brows. Only then did he notice a printed obituary on the living room shelf."In loving memory of Annabelle Turner…" He flung the obituary aside. "Bullshit!"Rhea hadn't had enough, had she?He angrily took out his phone and called Rhea's number. What greeted him was a flat tone from the other end of the call.Gabriel then sent her a text message. He was stunned when he saw the little red exclamation mark beside his message. His deep rage came next.Had Rhea actually blocked him? All because he was going to look aft
