Chapter 2

Author: NineSeven
I was still a little pissed when the annual party ended.

Without waiting for Andrea, I drove alone to the bridal shop in the city center. The custom wedding dress I had ordered for next week was there. It had cost six figures, but I felt no hesitation paying for it. I wanted to give her the best.

When the shop assistant saw me, her expression turned awkward. "Mr. Reed… Miss Smith came by this afternoon. She already took the dress."

I frowned, puzzled. Was she trying to surprise me?

I was ready to forgive her. I even took out my phone to ask what she wanted for dinner.

Then I saw her new post. No caption, just a photo. She was wearing the wedding dress. Ethan stood behind her, his arms wrapped around her waist.

He had left a comment beneath it: [My girl is the most beautiful bride in the world today.]

My hand began to shake around the phone.

When I got home and pushed the door open, the living room was a disaster. Takeout boxes, bottles, and scraps of white fabric covered the coffee table.

The wedding dress I had custom made lay among them, cut into pieces. One piece sat under a pizza box, soaked with grease.

Andrea and Ethan were playing video games. They were squeezed into a single seat, their bodies pressed together.

When she saw me, she did not even look up.

"You're back? Pour me a glass of water." Her tone was flat.

I walked to the coffee table and picked up a grease-stained piece of the dress. "What is this?"

Only then did she glance at me, her expression indifferent.

"Oh, Ethan said he wanted to see me in the wedding dress, so I wore it for him. He accidentally damaged it, so I cut it into a short dress. Then I messed it up." She shrugged and kept playing. "You're rich anyway. Just buy another one. What's the big deal?"

Ethan leaned out from her arms. In a soft, calculated voice, he said, "Sorry, Mr. Reed. I didn't know the dress was so expensive. I thought it was just some cheap prop you got online. I'll pay you back… Even though I only make a few hundred a month, I can pay in installments…"

At once, Andrea exploded. She threw the controller aside and stood, shielding him. "Pay for what? He's just a kid. What does he know? Is one stupid dress more important than him being happy? Daniel, stop coming home with that sour face. You act like someone owes you millions."

I looked at her. This was the face I had loved for seven years. For her, I gave up a high-paying job on Crownmarket Square and came back to work myself to exhaustion for her family's failing business. I drank for her, stayed up nights for her, and handled every dirty and exhausting task for her. I turned her into the admired, beautiful CEO everyone envied.

In the end, I was not even as important as making that manipulative coward happy.

I said nothing. I turned and walked into the kitchen. I needed a glass of cold water to put out the fire in my chest.

I picked up my cup, the one from our matching set.

Something yellow, sticky, mixed with saliva was soaking inside it—Ethan's clear aligner.

My stomach churned.

"Who did this?" I walked out, holding the cup.

Andrea glanced at it and frowned in disgust. "Oh please. Ethan didn't have anywhere to put it, so he used your cup for a bit. Just wash it. Why are you being so dramatic?"

"That's my cup."

"I know it's your cup. So what if we used it? Are you going to die?" she snapped.

I forced down the urge to kill. As I looked at her completely justified expression, something inside me stretched to its limit.

I glanced at the ruined wedding dress on the floor, then at the aligner in the cup.

Suddenly, I felt relieved.

"Mr. Reed, we heard you had an unpleasant relationship experience before. Did it have any impact on you?"I smiled faintly and looked into the camera. "I'm grateful for the experience. It was like escaping a disaster."-At that same moment, in a dark corner of the city…Andrea, newly released after serving her sentence, rummaged through a trash can for food. One of her legs had been broken in detention. I refused to let this farce end in private. I pressed Enter and anonymously broadcast the warehouse surveillance footage on the largest LED screen in the city center. It was the advertising screen directly across from the Smith Group building.Rush hour had begun. Thousands of pedestrians stopped and looked up.The footage was high definition, the audio crystal clear. The entire city watched the once powerful, beautiful CEO and her "boy toy" tear into each other like mad dogs.Ethan pinned Andrea to the ground and choked her. "Die! You useless piece of trash! If it weren't for Daniel, what would you even be? You think I ever liked you? I was in it for the money!"Andrea clawed at Ethan's face, her voice shrill as she screamed, "You ruined me! Daniel was so good to me, and I didn't want him… Why did I fall for a piece of trash like you? I'm going to kill you!"Police sirens blared. Officers rushed into the warehouse and forced the two apart.Bystanders recorded the scene and uplo

Andrea returned home to find the house completely ransacked. Her luxury handbags and jewelry were gone, along with the shredded remnants of her wedding dress. Ethan had sold everything of value. As despair set in, a knock sounded at the door.Bianca arrived with several burly men to collect the debt. She strode into the living room in high heels and pulled out a promissory note. "Miss Smith, Ethan owes me 500,000 dollars. You are the guarantor."Andrea lost control. "I never signed anything! I never signed anything!"She snatched the note and examined it. Her signature was there, along with her company's stamp.Ethan had stolen it and stamped it himself.Bianca smiled with concealed malice and slapped her across the face.Blood filled Andrea's mouth."Whether you signed it or that dog forged it, the debt must be paid. If we can't find him, you will pay. Today is the deadline," Bianca said.Andrea broke down in tears. "I have no money… My company is bankrupt… The house is under

One month after I left, Andrea was released on bail pending trial. Her nightmare, however, had only begun. The company collapsed soon after.I had been the company's central pillar. The moment I left, its financial chain snapped and projects ground to a halt. Suppliers crowded the entrance, demanding payment. Employees panicked and resigned one after another.Andrea tried to imitate how I had run things. She believed that as long as she sat in my seat, she only needed to sign documents.Instead, her lack of understanding made her an easy target. Competitors set her up, and she signed a dual contract. Not only did she fail to secure funding, but she also lost a 300,000 dollar deposit. That had been the company's last liquid cash.Ethan offered no help. He continued to live like a spoiled prince, maxing out Andrea's credit cards on luxury watches and limited-edition sneakers. As he put it: "Andrea, I'm the Operations Director. Luckily, I survived. At the very last moment before the explosion, a passing truck driver risked his life, smashed the window, and dragged me out.Behind me, flames shot into the sky. In that instant, something inside me went completely still.I was burned clean.…I woke up in the ICU with multiple fractures across my body, a mild concussion, and severe burns on my thigh.Andrea didn't show up until three days later. She carried a basket of fruit, the cheap kind sold outside hospitals. Inside were two strawberries. Still strawberries. When she saw me covered in bandages, my leg suspended, a trace of panic finally crossed her face. "How did it get this bad? I thought you were just stuck… The rain was too heavy that day. Ethan kept crying, so I…"I closed my eyes. I did not want to look at her. Another glance felt repulsive."Get out."Andrea froze for a moment, then her expression shifted to embarrassment and anger. "Daniel, don't be ungrateful. I came to see you, didn't I? Th

Victor Hayes, the representative of the largest investor, walked in. He ignored Andrea, who was in the middle of losing her temper, and came straight to me.He extended his hand, smiling. "Mr. Reed, I hear you're going solo. For the next round of funding, we recognize only you. As for the Smith Group…"He shot Andrea a cold glance. "If not for Mr. Reed, why would we ever work with a company like this?"Andrea froze. Panic flickered across her face. She might be arrogant, but she was not foolish. Victor's words hit like ice water and shattered her sense of superiority. She forced a smile and stepped forward. "Mr. Hayes, you must be joking. I'm Andrea Smith. Have you mistaken me for someone else? Daniel is just my assistant…"Victor barely looked at her. "Miss Smith? Oh, the one with negative assets. Mr. Reed, is the contract signed? My car is downstairs."I nodded and handed the signed termination agreement to my secretary."Let's go." I stood to leave.Andrea grabbed my arm. "D
