Chapter 2

Author: Rui Rui
Through the laughter, someone stepped out from behind the screen.

He wore a perfectly tailored suit, the cufflinks at his wrists catching the light with every small movement. He was beautiful, but his eyes were cold as frost, his lips pressed into a thin line, his features sharp and sculpted like something out of a painting.

Gregory Evans.

Behind him followed the "dead" man from the floor, brushing dust off his jacket and shooting me a wink.

A setup. Another one of their little stunts.

"HAHAHA! Gregory, you see that? Cynthia's so head-over-heels for you she'd walk into prison without blinking!"

Patrick clapped Gregory hard on the shoulder. "Just give her the damn donation form already! With a brain this lovesick, forget a heart—you could ask for her head and she'd hand it over with a smile!"

I stood there, hair plastered to my face, slippers full of slush, toes numb from the cold. But my face gave nothing away. Not a flicker.

Gregory walked up to me. He had a head on me, looking down with those dark, unreadable eyes.

He took a file from his assistant and held it out to me. "Since you're willing to go to prison for me, how about this?"

Brown paper envelope. Crisp, heavy stock.

I flipped open the first page.

VOLUNTARY HEART DONATION AGREEMENT.

Page after page of fine print, all boiling down to one thing: I'd have my heart removed in surgery and given to someone else.

I looked up, straight into his eyes.

"Nancy has heart disease," he said flatly, no emotion in his voice. "You're the only match in the entire city. Don't worry—you won't die. I've had an artificial heart custom-made for you overseas. It'll keep you functioning."

He paused. Something flickered in those cold eyes—brief, barely there.

"Cynthia, if you're willing to give your heart to Nancy—"

He leaned in, lowering his head close to my ear, his voice dropping to a whisper, warm breath brushing my skin.

"I'll marry you."

The room went silent. Everyone was waiting for my reaction, like they were watching the climax of a show.

I knew he loved Nancy. Everyone knew.

He'd loved her for over a decade. Grew up with her, made her laugh, and then she chose another man and left the country before he even got the chance to confess. He waited in silence for seven years. When she got dumped, when she got sick, he flew over the second he heard and brought her back, using every resource he had to find her a matching heart.

Now, to keep Nancy alive, he was willing to marry a woman he didn't love.

Pathetic. And pitiful.

I looked down at the donation agreement. The signature line sat empty.

Then I lifted my head and smiled.

"Sure. I'll do it."

Light and easy.

Someone in the room sucked in a sharp breath.

Gregory's pupils contracted. "You… really mean it?"

He'd probably prepared a whole speech. Had contingencies for if I refused, leverage to use against me. But he never expected me to say yes that fast.

I kept smiling, my voice soft. "Whatever you ask of me—I'll do it."

Giving my heart to the woman he truly loved.

That was my hundredth task for him.

Once it was done, I could go home. I could see Grayson again.

Gregory's throat bobbed. He looked at me, drenched and shivering, pale from the cold—and something in those frozen eyes seemed to crack.

I picked up the pen and signed my name on the line. Neat strokes. Steady hand.

He stared for a long time. Long enough that someone nearby started clearing their throat. When he finally snapped out of it, his voice came out rough. "The surgery is scheduled for two weeks from now. I'll make sure everything's arranged. It won't be too hard on you."

I nodded, still smiling.

But inside, I'd never felt lighter.

Two weeks. And I'd be gone.

Fine.

The last day, he wanted a proper goodbye. We agreed to meet at the lake in Central Park.It was winter now. Few people around. Just a few swans paddling near the shore, begging for food.I tossed them pieces of bread, and they let out happy little calls.Gregory stood a few steps away, watching the scene with a quiet, satisfied look.If he could see this every day, how wonderful that would be.But it was only a fantasy. The minutes ticked by, pulling him closer to the moment he would have to leave. One last time, he let himself be selfish. He walked up to me and pulled me into his arms. The familiar scent of his cologne hit me, and my first instinct was to push him away. But he was taller, stronger. I couldn't break free.It made me uneasy. I didn't want to linger in his hold. I just wanted to get out.Just as I was starting to panic, a firm hand gripped my shoulder and yanked me out of his embrace.I spun around, startled, and met Grayson's gentle eyes. For the first time in a long ti

Early the next morning, I showed up at the hospital with breakfast.Gregory was already packed, standing by the door when I arrived. He smiled when he saw me and walked over to greet me. "Already checked myself out. Different world, but basically the same process."I stared at him, confused. He seemed like a different person. One night, and suddenly he was this at peace?Seeing my doubt, he explained. "I thought it through. The only reason I was so hung up on this was because I thought you loved me that much and I had never treated you right.""Now that we've cleared the air, I have no reason to hold on.""And you were right. My mission was to get you to forgive me. Since you have, I can go back anytime.""But before I do, could you give me three days?""Don't worry. I won't ask for anything crazy. I just want to have a meal with you. See some sights. Then I'll go. I won't bother you again."I hesitated, then gave a small nod.Even Gregory hadn't realized that real love meant letting g

For the first time, I realized how humiliating it was to lay everything bare.I had done so much for him, yes. But I had also lied to him.And I had given him my heart, a debt paid in full. Neither of us owed the other anything. But now he had saved me, and that put me in his debt again.I hated that. Those hundred tasks? I had done them willingly. He did not owe me an apology.I thought for a long time before I spoke."Gregory. I never loved you. I got close to you for another man."His face changed instantly. The worry in his brow spread like tangled vines."You're lying. Cynthia, tell me you're lying.""You made that up so I would give up. I don't believe it. Not a single word."I did not stop. I kept going."Five years ago, my lover died saving me in a car crash.""I was broken, completely hollow. Then a system appeared and gave me a mission: do one hundred things for a man, and my lover would come back to life. That man was you.""Think about it. Wasn't my appearance strange?""Be

The air was filled with screams and the pounding of footsteps. I stared at the pool of blood on the floor, my mind spinning.Him. Of all people, him.The ambulance arrived fast and took him to the hospital. Since no one knew him here, I had to go with. Grayson came along too, worried, unwilling to let me face it alone. In the hallway outside the ER, the surgery light blinked red. Just the two of us.Seeing how pale I had gone, Grayson spoke first. "You seem really worried about him. Is he a friend?"I flinched, then shook my head. "No. But he got hurt because of me."A beat of silence passed. Then I looked up at him. "Grayson. Can I tell you a story?"He nodded, and without a word, slipped off his jacket and draped it over my shoulders.I sniffled and began."Five years ago, you had that accident. I was shattered. I wanted to follow you. But then a system showed up.""It told me that if I did one hundred things for a man, you would come back to me.""So to be with you, I didn't hesitat

The next morning, I stepped outside, and there Gregory was. Waiting at the bottom of the stairs. He must have been standing there for a while. Dew clung to his long eyelashes. He was striking, always had been. Tall, sharp features, refined. He looked completely out of place in this modest neighborhood. The moment he spotted me, Gregory's face lit up. He strode over, holding up a bag of breakfast."Cynthia!"He pushed it into my hands, his voice almost pleading. "These are all your favorites. I got them myself."I stared at the bag in front of me and couldn't summon a single smile.I let out a tired sigh and met his eyes. "I already told you. Don't come back. Why won't you just listen?"He flinched. The proud, untouchable Gregory, reduced to this. "I just want to be good to you."I pushed his hand away. "I don't need you to be good to me.""Gregory, I'll say this one more time. I'm not forgiving you because I never blamed you in the first place.""What's past is past. I've started a new

After parting ways with Gregory, I was still a little shaken. He had no idea why I'd been by his side all those years. If his system mission had anything to do with me—did that mean he'd keep showing up in my life?It bothered me. My feelings about Gregory were complicated—messy, even. I couldn't quite name what I felt.Forget it. I shook the thought away. Right now, the only thing that mattered was getting Grayson's memories back.I pulled out my keys and unlocked the door, setting the fruit on the table. I tied on my apron and headed toward the kitchen."Grayson, I got your favorite persimmons today. I'll start cooking—just rest for a bit. Dinner'll be ready soon."But the voice that answered wasn't his."Hi there. I'm Grayson's coworker. He stepped out for a bit—should be back soon."I turned around. A young woman stood in the living room—pretty, with delicate features and a bright, confident smile. She introduced herself. "I'm Donna White.""We had a project to go over, so I came b
