Chapter 7

Author: Rui Rui
"Help... someone help!"

The freezing water swallowed me whole, leaving only a sliver of light above. Then that too faded away.

I closed my eyes, my body growing heavier and heavier. I was so tired. So exhausted. I just wanted to sink and sleep.

No... I couldn't. Not yet. I still had one last thing to do. If I didn't finish it, I'd never see Grayson again.

That thought shot through me like a jolt of electricity. My eyes flew open. I dug deep, found something I didn't know I had, and clawed my way up toward the surface.

When I finally dragged myself onto the shore, I was completely spent. Water burned in my chest, my lungs on fire, coughing so hard I thought they'd burst. I clung to the rocks, gasping, feeling like a pathetic, half-drowned rat.

Before I could catch my breath, a dull thud hit my shoulder—then I was kicked back into the water.

On the bank, a row of bodyguards in suits stared down at me, faces blank. "Mr. Evans said you're not allowed back on land until you find the necklace."

I choked on another mouthful of seawater before steadying myself.

So that's how it was. If I didn't find it, they weren't letting me go.

With no other choice, I dove down. Over and over.

Three hours. Countless dives. My fingers were numb and wrinkled, my whole body frozen stiff—but I finally found it. The necklace Nancy had tossed.

When I got back up, I couldn't even feel my own limbs. A guard tossed me a change of clothes and told me to get dressed.

Shaking violently, I took the clothes and stumbled into the restroom.

That's when I heard footsteps. Voices. Familiar ones.

Nancy and her circle of friends.

"Nancy, Evans is absolutely crazy about you. That necklace was worth a fortune, and he just handed it over without blinking. The second you cried, he looked like he'd tear his own heart out for you."

"You used to say you only saw him as a brother, ran off with your ex. Then the ex split the second he heard about your heart condition. Gregory never left. After everything he's done for you, even a stone would crack."

Nancy laughed, a hint of smugness in her voice. "You fell for that too? Men always want what they can't have. As long as I keep Gregory on a string, he'll love me forever. That's way better than actually being with him."

Gasps from her friends. "Wait—so you leaving with your ex was all an act?"

"You've been playing the long game this whole time!"

Nancy chuckled. "Of course. Is there any other man out there who compares to Gregory?"

"That guy was just a prop. I brought him in to make Gregory jealous."

"And look at him now—wasted away, pining for me all these years."

Her friend clapped. "Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant."

"Just don't push it too far, Nancy. I heard Gregory's marrying Cynthia to get her heart for you. If that happens, all your scheming goes down the drain."

Nancy's voice turned confident. "I've got it under control."

"Besides, Gregory doesn't give a damn about her. A few days ago, I slapped myself three times, and he had her slapped thirty times. Tonight, I threw that necklace in the ocean, and he threw her in after it without a second thought. She's still down there. I've got plenty of ways to make her life hell. Trust me—that wedding's not happening."

Their voices faded, footsteps retreating until the restroom fell silent again.

I stepped out slowly, my phone in my hand.

The recording app was still running.

So that's what his so-called true love was really like.

I hit stop and stared at the complete file, a bitter smile tugging at my lips. I'd leave this for Gregory. One last gift before I went.

The last day, he wanted a proper goodbye. We agreed to meet at the lake in Central Park.It was winter now. Few people around. Just a few swans paddling near the shore, begging for food.I tossed them pieces of bread, and they let out happy little calls.Gregory stood a few steps away, watching the scene with a quiet, satisfied look.If he could see this every day, how wonderful that would be.But it was only a fantasy. The minutes ticked by, pulling him closer to the moment he would have to leave. One last time, he let himself be selfish. He walked up to me and pulled me into his arms. The familiar scent of his cologne hit me, and my first instinct was to push him away. But he was taller, stronger. I couldn't break free.It made me uneasy. I didn't want to linger in his hold. I just wanted to get out.Just as I was starting to panic, a firm hand gripped my shoulder and yanked me out of his embrace.I spun around, startled, and met Grayson's gentle eyes. For the first time in a long ti

Early the next morning, I showed up at the hospital with breakfast.Gregory was already packed, standing by the door when I arrived. He smiled when he saw me and walked over to greet me. "Already checked myself out. Different world, but basically the same process."I stared at him, confused. He seemed like a different person. One night, and suddenly he was this at peace?Seeing my doubt, he explained. "I thought it through. The only reason I was so hung up on this was because I thought you loved me that much and I had never treated you right.""Now that we've cleared the air, I have no reason to hold on.""And you were right. My mission was to get you to forgive me. Since you have, I can go back anytime.""But before I do, could you give me three days?""Don't worry. I won't ask for anything crazy. I just want to have a meal with you. See some sights. Then I'll go. I won't bother you again."I hesitated, then gave a small nod.Even Gregory hadn't realized that real love meant letting g

For the first time, I realized how humiliating it was to lay everything bare.I had done so much for him, yes. But I had also lied to him.And I had given him my heart, a debt paid in full. Neither of us owed the other anything. But now he had saved me, and that put me in his debt again.I hated that. Those hundred tasks? I had done them willingly. He did not owe me an apology.I thought for a long time before I spoke."Gregory. I never loved you. I got close to you for another man."His face changed instantly. The worry in his brow spread like tangled vines."You're lying. Cynthia, tell me you're lying.""You made that up so I would give up. I don't believe it. Not a single word."I did not stop. I kept going."Five years ago, my lover died saving me in a car crash.""I was broken, completely hollow. Then a system appeared and gave me a mission: do one hundred things for a man, and my lover would come back to life. That man was you.""Think about it. Wasn't my appearance strange?""Be

The air was filled with screams and the pounding of footsteps. I stared at the pool of blood on the floor, my mind spinning.Him. Of all people, him.The ambulance arrived fast and took him to the hospital. Since no one knew him here, I had to go with. Grayson came along too, worried, unwilling to let me face it alone. In the hallway outside the ER, the surgery light blinked red. Just the two of us.Seeing how pale I had gone, Grayson spoke first. "You seem really worried about him. Is he a friend?"I flinched, then shook my head. "No. But he got hurt because of me."A beat of silence passed. Then I looked up at him. "Grayson. Can I tell you a story?"He nodded, and without a word, slipped off his jacket and draped it over my shoulders.I sniffled and began."Five years ago, you had that accident. I was shattered. I wanted to follow you. But then a system showed up.""It told me that if I did one hundred things for a man, you would come back to me.""So to be with you, I didn't hesitat

The next morning, I stepped outside, and there Gregory was. Waiting at the bottom of the stairs. He must have been standing there for a while. Dew clung to his long eyelashes. He was striking, always had been. Tall, sharp features, refined. He looked completely out of place in this modest neighborhood. The moment he spotted me, Gregory's face lit up. He strode over, holding up a bag of breakfast."Cynthia!"He pushed it into my hands, his voice almost pleading. "These are all your favorites. I got them myself."I stared at the bag in front of me and couldn't summon a single smile.I let out a tired sigh and met his eyes. "I already told you. Don't come back. Why won't you just listen?"He flinched. The proud, untouchable Gregory, reduced to this. "I just want to be good to you."I pushed his hand away. "I don't need you to be good to me.""Gregory, I'll say this one more time. I'm not forgiving you because I never blamed you in the first place.""What's past is past. I've started a new

After parting ways with Gregory, I was still a little shaken. He had no idea why I'd been by his side all those years. If his system mission had anything to do with me—did that mean he'd keep showing up in my life?It bothered me. My feelings about Gregory were complicated—messy, even. I couldn't quite name what I felt.Forget it. I shook the thought away. Right now, the only thing that mattered was getting Grayson's memories back.I pulled out my keys and unlocked the door, setting the fruit on the table. I tied on my apron and headed toward the kitchen."Grayson, I got your favorite persimmons today. I'll start cooking—just rest for a bit. Dinner'll be ready soon."But the voice that answered wasn't his."Hi there. I'm Grayson's coworker. He stepped out for a bit—should be back soon."I turned around. A young woman stood in the living room—pretty, with delicate features and a bright, confident smile. She introduced herself. "I'm Donna White.""We had a project to go over, so I came b
