Chapter 2

Author: Sauce Bottle
The first time I saw the advertisement was on a fan forum dedicated to Winter.

That day, my supervisor caught me scrolling through celebrity paparazzi photos at my desk and fired me.

I walked out of the office building carrying a cardboard box as rain poured from the sky. I hadn't brought an umbrella, and my makeup was ruined, leaving black streaks beneath my eyes.

Just then, my phone lit up.

[AI Bio-Facial Transformation. Zero-invasive face replacement. Now recruiting trial participants for a limited time.]

I assumed it was a scam.

But when I opened it, I noticed that one of the before-and-after photos featured a face that looked remarkably similar to Winter's.

Beneath it was a line of fine print:

[Powered by deep-learning facial modeling technology. A non-surgical bio-synthetic dermal layer replicates the target's facial features with complete accuracy. Duration depends on membership tier.]

I stared at the words "membership tier" for a long time.

Then I filled out the application.

The interview took place in an office tower. It looked like a high-end cosmetic clinic, except it was unnaturally spotless, not even the faint smell of disinfectant lingered in the air.

The woman who greeted me wore a white lab coat. A surgical mask covered half her face, leaving only a pair of gentle-looking eyes visible.

"Why did you choose Winter Lambert?" she asked.

"Because she's beautiful," I replied. "Because I wanted to know whether beautiful people had easier lives."

The woman smiled, but the smile never reached her eyes.

"We can make you become her," she said.

"But there are three things you need to understand. First, this technology hasn't been made public, so you'll need to sign a confidentiality agreement.

“Second, maintaining the face requires continuous activation. The complimentary trial lasts thirty days, after which you'll need to purchase a membership. Third, and most importantly..."

She paused before taking a contract from the drawer.

"This face doesn't belong to you. You're renting it. When the lease expires, you'll have to give it back."

I signed the contract.

The procedure was much simpler than I'd expected.

There were no scalpels, no blood. I simply lay inside a machine that resembled a CT scanner while a layer of icy gel was spread across my face.

I could feel something growing beneath my skin, spreading like vines through damp soil.

Three hours later, I sat up and looked into the mirror.

Winter looked back at me.

It wasn't just similar.

It was identical.

Even I couldn't tell which face was real anymore.

I raised my hand.

The woman in the mirror raised hers.

I frowned.

She frowned too.

The eerie symmetry made me want to scream.

It also made me want to cry.

"The complimentary trial lasts thirty days," the woman in the lab coat said.

"After that, if you don't wish to renew, we'll restore your original face. If you do renew, there are four membership tiers: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Diamond. Each tier extends the duration, and naturally, the price increases as well."

"How much?"

"Bronze Membership costs three thousand dollars and maintains the face for seven days.

“Silver Membership costs ten thousand dollars lasts thirty days.

“Gold Membership costs ten hundred thousand dollars and lasts a full year. As for Diamond Membership..."

She glanced at me.

"A one-time payment of one million dollars grants permanent maintenance, along with facial enhancement upgrades."

I reached up and touched my new face.

The skin felt real. It was warm. It had pores. It even produced natural oil.

"What if I can't afford to renew?"

The warmth disappeared from the woman's eyes.

"Then this face will die," she said. "It'll wither and rot, like a dying flower."

A chill ran down my spine.

But at the time, I had no idea those words would become the beginning of every nightmare that followed.

But I didn't regret it.At least during those years of wearing borrowed faces, I truly lived.I'd walked the red carpet.I'd held trophies in my hands.I'd been loved by millions. That love had belonged to Winter. It had belonged to Sabrina. But the one who experienced it was me—my body, soul, and memories. For a little while, I'd stood in the light, even if it had never been mine. When the sentencing ended, the bailiffs escorted me out of the courtroom. As I passed the gallery, my mother suddenly stood up and called my name."Mabel!"I stopped. But I didn't turn around."Mabel, I'll be here waiting when you come home."Her voice trembled like a spider's thread swaying in the wind.I gave a small nod and kept walking.Prison life was simpler than I'd imagined.Every morning began at six.Work.Meals.Sleep.No phone. No mirrors. No roles left to play.Little by little, I grew accustomed to my real face—its ordinariness, its flaws, the fact that it would never change.Sometimes I dreame

"How ironic," I said. "I went to such lengths to trade one face for another, only to be undone by the one part of me that had always been real."…Daniel rose from his chair and walked to the window. It was set high in the wall, revealing nothing but the same dull patch of gray sky I'd seen when I first arrived."One last question," he said. "Why tell us all this? You could've stayed silent. You could've waited for a lawyer. You could've tried to beat the charges. Someone as smart as you knows the more you confess, the worse it gets."I looked at his back."Because I'm tired," I said. "I've been acting for three years, and I'm exhausted.""I've been Winter. I've been Sabrina. I've even pretended to be myself. Every face I wore was rented. Every life I lived belonged to someone else. “I've had everything... and I've lost everything. Now I just want to be Mabel Shaw again.""Even if that means spending the rest of your life in prison?""Even then," I said. "At least that would be the re

I hung up and stared at the mirror.Sabrina's face stared back at me.She looked exhausted, pale, with dark circles beneath her eyes that even makeup couldn't hide. The tiny beauty mark was still there, but it no longer completed the face. Now it looked like a tear that had dried into a stain.I only seventy-two hours left.I started borrowing money.I called friends, my manager, and investors I'd worked with before. But everyone avoided me like the plague.Sabrina's name had become toxic. Anyone associated with her risked being dragged down too.On the sixtieth hour, I received one final phone call.It was from the police."Miss Shaw?" the officer said. "We've discovered a body at an abandoned factory on the outskirts of the city. Preliminary identification suggests it's Winter Lambert. “Your number was the last one in her call records, and we'd like you to come in for questioning."I looked at the mirror and suddenly laughed. So, it wasn't Sabrina's scandal that destroyed me.It was

"Two million dollars," I said. "I know. I have the money."Winter's savings, combined with everything I'd earned working in her place, were just enough. The procedure was far more complicated than the last one. This time, I wasn't just changing my appearance.I was completely discarding Winter's facial structure and rebuilding it to match Sabrina's bone structure.I spent six hours inside the machine. It felt as though someone was demolishing the house beneath my skin and constructing an entirely new one in its place. When I woke up, Sabrina was staring back at me from the mirror. She looked more mature and commanding than Winter.A tiny beauty mark rested beneath the corner of her eye, the perfect finishing touch to an already striking face.I raised my hand. The woman in the mirror did the same.I smiled. She smiled back. This time, there was no confusion and fear, only excitement.I inherited Sabrina's life.It was even more glamorous than Winter's.She was at the height of her car

"The bigger problem was that articles about Winter looking 'off' started appearing everywhere. I couldn't perfectly replicate her expressions. After all, I wasn't really her."The Diamond Membership kept her face intact, but it couldn't preserve her career."Three months later, I received the first rejection."An A-list historical drama I'd already been cast in as the female lead replaced me. The producers said Winter's reputation had slipped too much and that she was too much of an investment risk."I begged them. I told them I'd accept a pay cut. I'd even work for free. I'd cooperate with any promotional campaign they wanted. But they politely turned me down... and then announced the new female lead, Sabrina Hayes."The moment I spoke her name, Daniel's frown deepened."The rival actress?""That's right. The woman who grabbed my chin in the hallway." I smiled faintly. "She took Winter's role, and that drama brought her career roaring back. She even won Best Actress."And my fans...

The first blow stunned her. She seemed unable to comprehend what had happened.Blood trickled from her temple, running down her flawless face like a crimson tear. The second blow knocked her to the floor. Her eyes remained open, the shock in them slowly giving way to fear. The third. The fourth. The fifth...I couldn't remember how many times I struck her.I only remembered that when I finally stopped, her face was no longer recognizable.Blood had splattered across the cream-colored carpet, across the custom couture gown I'd rented, and across my face that was already beginning to fail.Breathing heavily, I dropped to my knees beside her.Her body still twitched faintly, her half-open eyes staring blankly at the ceiling.I reached out and gently closed them, as carefully as if I were performing a scene on a film set."I'm sorry," I whispered. But I didn't know who I was apologizing to.…Getting rid of the body was easier than I'd expected.Winter's penthouse had a private elevator th
