Chapter 4

Author: Breezy Bree
I looked at Mom's flushed face and hesitated.

Maybe... maybe last night was just impulsive.

Maybe the favoritism and all the hurt weren't really intentional.

In the end, I gave in.

At the hospital, Mom lay in bed groaning. "Everything hurts. This hurts, that hurts... Doctor, I want a full checkup."

The doctor wrote up the orders, and I spent the whole day running around the hospital—grabbing meds, dropping off samples, paying bills.

Mom kept demanding more tests. Head CT. Full-body bone scan. One after another.

I didn't complain. I just paid quietly every time.

Before long, my savings were almost drained.

On the third day, I finally asked, "Mom, do you really need all these tests?"

"What would you know!"

Her voice instantly shot up. "I'm this sick and you think I shouldn't get checked? Feeling bad about the money already? I raised you all these years. Do you know how much that cost—"

"I'll start cashing out the CD." I cut her off, exhausted. "It matures today."

Mom's face lit up immediately. "That's my girl. I knew you were a good daughter."

That night, I dragged myself back from the hospital cafeteria carrying dinner.

Right before I pushed open the ward door, I heard voices inside.

"Mom, she really started the withdrawal?"

Sophie's voice.

"She did. Twenty grand. Once it clears, that'll keep us going for a while."

I pressed myself against the door and held my breath.

"Once we get all the money, we'll say this hospital can't treat the illness and we need to go to a bigger city. Make her keep paying. Then after that, we block her."

"No rush." Mom sounded completely calm. "Keep her calm for a couple more days. Once all the money's in, we'll deal with the rest. She's softhearted. Easy to manipulate."

My hand shook on the doorknob.

So that was the truth.

I quietly stepped back and walked away.

I stood by the window at the end of the hallway for a long time.

The next day, relatives heard Mom was hospitalized and came to visit.

The room was packed. Fruit baskets and flower bouquets filled every corner.

Mom lay in bed dramatically talking about how hard she'd worked raising her two daughters.

Sophie stood beside her, carefully helping her drink water. The perfect mother-daughter scene.

Once everyone had gathered, I cleared my throat. "Since the whole family's here, tell me if this sounds fair."

The room went silent.

"I'm planning to buy a place in the city where I work. I'm six grand short on the down payment." I kept my voice calm. "Mom gave Sophie twenty thousand dollars for her future. So asking for six thousand as her daughter isn't too much, right?"

Mom's smile instantly froze.

The relatives exchanged looks. Someone quietly asked, "Twenty thousand? Since when?"

The cup in Sophie's hand jerked. Water splashed across the bed.

"Mom, what do you think?" I looked her straight in the eye. "Six grand isn't much for you, right? You love your daughters so much. You wouldn't play favorites, would you?"

Mom opened her mouth, her face going from red to pale.

She glanced around the room. Every relative was staring at her now—curious, suspicious, waiting.

"I..." Her voice came out strained. "I'm in the hospital right now. Where would I even get that kind of money—"

"No rush." I smiled. "I can wait until you're discharged. Or you can lend me six thousand from the twenty grand you gave Sophie. We're both your daughters. We should be treated the same, right?"

"Support you?" Sophie spun around, voice sharp. "You took the condo back. You took the savings back. What exactly am I supposed to support you with?"Windows slid open one by one. Neighbors leaned out to watch.Nobody stepped in. They just watched."I-I was scared you'd waste it." Mom panted, clutching the wall to stay on her feet."Waste it?" Sophie scoffed. "Then why weren't you scared Elayne would waste it? What about all the money you squeezed out of her? Weren't you saving that for me? Where is it?"Mom went pale. "Medical bills... it went to treatment...""Gone?" Sophie snapped. "Twenty grand vanished in a few months? You think I'm that dumb?""It's true! The medication is really expensive..." Mom burst into tears, but it only made her seem even faker."I don't care." Sophie yanked her hand away. "I'm broke. If you need money, go ask your precious capable daughter. Doesn't she send you money every month?""She... She only sends $500. What's that supposed to cover..." Mom

"Mom, isn't this a little—""A little what?" she cut in. "I raised her. Of course she should take care of me. Besides, she's successful now. Eight or ten grand means nothing to her. If I don't ask for more for you, what are you supposed to do later?"I closed my eyes as the world tilted around me.So that was the truth.Even now. Even dying. Even actually sick. She was still using me.My concern, my care, my money—everything was just a way to secure Sophie's future.Even my responsibility and competence had turned into excuses to make me her free caregiver.I pulled out the card with the twenty grand on it, stared at it, then let out a laugh.Right then, my phone rang."Elayne..." Her voice sounded weak and miserable. "W-Where are you? I want to see you... one last time..."I took a slow breath. "I'm downstairs at the hospital."There was a pause, then sudden surprise. "You're here? Come upstairs. I have so much I need to tell you—""No need," I cut her off. "I already hea

"Elayne! Mom passed out! Mom froze. Her eyes dropped to the cardboard box in my hand, then snapped back to my face. Panic flashed across her expression. "W-Why are you carrying that?""I quit." My voice stayed flat. "Just like you wanted. I don't have a job anymore.""I-I didn't..." She stumbled over her words, then turned to the crowd. "I didn't want her to lose her job. I just wanted her to admit she was wrong! Where's her supervisor? I'll explain. I'll tell them I was joking—""No need," I cut in.Mom's face twisted with resentment. "This is all your fault. You did this. If you weren't so heartless, always so bothered by what I gave your sister, none of this would've happened. You're the one who tore this family apart."Heat rushed to my head.Twenty-eight years. Twenty-eight years of swallowing it, backing down, telling myself, 'She's Mom. She's struggling.'But not today."Bothered by what?" I let out a bitter laugh. "A room that was supposed to be mine? One birthday alone with my own mom? Basic

I watched the client leave before turning back to them, my voice ice-cold."How did you find me?""Mrs. Johnson's daughter works in the same office building as you. We saw you," Sophie said quickly, her eyes darting around the fancy café. "Looks like you're doing pretty well now.""If you have something to say, say it."I didn't ask them to sit.Mom's smile turned awkward. "Elayne, I know I hurt you before... but I'm still your mother. You can't just abandon me.""Get to the point.""Money," Sophie answered for her. "Mom's getting older, and her health's not great. She needs help with expenses. You're her daughter. You should help out."I looked at Mom and almost laughed. "Last time I checked, you said I wasn't your daughter anymore. Said I wouldn't get a single penny because everything was going to Sophie."Mom's face tightened. "I was angry! Mothers and daughters fight and move on!""Oh?" I raised a brow. "So is Sophie still getting everything?""Well..." Mom hesitated."

"What are you talking about..." Mom forced a smile. "I'm sick. How am I supposed to think about this right now...""You could give Sophie twenty grand while you're sick. Why can't you give me six?" I didn't back down. "I'm your daughter too. Shouldn't we be treated the same?"Aunt Nora cleared her throat. "Marlene, you really gave Sophie twenty thousand?""That was... that was..." Mom's face went pale. "It was for Sophie's future. I just gave it to her early—""Then give me my six thousand early too," I cut in. "Seems fair, doesn't it?"Sophie suddenly shot to her feet. "Elayne, Mom's this sick and you're still pressuring her? Seriously? What's wrong with you?""What's wrong with me?"I turned to her, years of anger finally boiling over."Where was your decency when you two tried to trick me into cashing out my twenty-thousand-dollar CD? Where was it when Mom faked being sick and made me run around paying all her hospital bills? And where was it every time the best stuff went t
