Mag-log inToby scolded Allison for being selfish, for not caring about others, and for lacking compassion.
Nigel also told her that only shallow people liked roses, and she should learn from Sherrie to understand moral principles and develop a character like bamboo.
Ruth tried to comfort her, saying that when people died, they were gone.
What was more important, a bunch of plants or Sherrie’s life?
In the end, all the roses along the wall were pulled out, making Allison feel alone and abandoned.
Her family members, who had been crying together, finally calmed down. Ruth wiped her tears with the back of her hand and suddenly remembered how cold it was. She turned to Allison and said, “Go take a hot shower with Ella to wash away the bad luck. From now on, we are still a family.”
Ella came out smiling and walked ahead to lead Allison.
The house her father left behind was a standalone villa, the place where Allison had grown up. But after three years away, it felt both familiar and strange. The layout was the same, but many things looked different now.
The shoe rack at the entrance was filled with pink fuzzy slippers owned by Sherrie. The framed portraits on the walls were of Sherrie. Even the thick carpet covering the staircase was placed there to keep Sherrie from falling. Her old room on the second floor was now Sherrie’s. It had the best sunlight and the best view, and there was no way they would have left it empty for three years.
As expected, Ella led her to a small room. Allison remembered it had been converted from a walk-in closet, slightly better than a maid’s quarters.
Allison didn’t recognize Ella. She must have been hired after Allison was sent to the psychiatric hospital.
When she entered the room, Allison instinctively looked toward a hidden surveillance camera in the corner of the wall. Without showing any reaction, she asked, “Ella, what happened to the former housekeeper?”
“Oh, she went back to her hometown three years ago. I heard her husband found a younger woman, and she wasn’t happy about it, so she went back to cause trouble,” Ella said with a sneer. “What man doesn’t cheat? If she makes a scene like that, it only hurts his pride more.”
Allison glanced at her but didn’t respond. Seeing that Allison wasn’t interested in the topic, Ella laughed softly and went into the bathroom to run the bathwater.
Meanwhile, Allison used the moment to check the drawers. The room looked like it had been set up in a hurry; there wasn’t a single electronic device inside.
Allison looked up at the surveillance camera again. On her way inside, she noticed several cameras had been installed throughout the house. They were clearly meant for her. Everyone thought she was crazy, and they were afraid she might harm Sherrie, so they needed to watch her constantly. If they were that afraid of her, why did they even bring her back from the psychiatric hospital?
Feeling suspicious, Allison saw Ella step out of the bathroom, so she quickly went inside and locked the door.
Ella knocked on the door. “Hey, why did you lock the door?”
“I’m taking a shower,” Allison briefly answered.
“You don’t need to lock the door for that!” Ella said in an annoyed tone.
Allison replied, “Do you not lock the door when you shower?”
Ella glanced toward the bathroom, then reached for her work uniform. But just as she was about to leave, she reached into her pocket and suddenly realized her phone was missing.
Inside the bathroom, Allison quickly took the phone apart, removed the SIM card, set it aside, and disabled the location tracking.
Then she began typing rapidly on the phone’s keyboard.
Outside, Ella pounded on the door. “Did you take my phone?”
Without turning around, Allison said, “I haven’t seen it.”
Ella didn’t believe her. “Open the door and let me in. I’ll check it myself.”
Allison brushed her off. “Wait until I’m done showering.”
Ella couldn’t force the door open and grew furious. She shouted through the door, “If you don’t open up, that means you definitely stole it! Just wait! I’m telling Mr. Nigel!”
Allison ignored her rant and focused on the phone screen. After a moment, the noise outside stopped. Ella had likely left.
Using Ella’s phone, Allison accessed the Rogers family’s security cameras.
On the screen, she saw Ruth and Nigel already sitting in the living room. Ronan had pulled Sherrie aside to talk to her.
With a gentle look, Ronan said, “Sherrie, we brought her back this time to discuss breaking off the engagement. You can’t keep hesitating.”
Sherrie bit her lip, looking troubled as she pushed him away. “Your engagement is with the Rogers family. I’m an outsider. How could I take my sister’s fiancé? I can’t betray Allison.”
Ronan walked around and faced her again. He leaned down to look at her blushing face and coaxed, “Come on, it’s the modern age. Arranged marriages are an outdated custom that should have been abolished long ago. Besides, our whole family has already agreed to call off the engagement. If it helps, I can apologize to her. If she refuses, she’ll never see me again.”
Watching the surveillance footage, Allison smirked coldly. So that was their plan. No wonder they hastily brought her out of the psychiatric hospital. They wanted her to give up her fiancé.
She remembered that when Ronan was born, he had been in a breech position and got stuck in the birth canal. No hospital in Kansas dared to handle the delivery. It was her father who used an old medical method to keep Ronan’s mother alive long enough to give birth to him. His mother had survived death that day and was so grateful that she arranged the engagement between their families.
And now, the Lopez family wanted to give that gratitude to Sherrie instead.
Soon enough, Ella came back. She used a key to unlock the bathroom door and burst in without any politeness. “Ms. Rogers, stealing is a bad habit. If Mr. Nigel finds out, he’ll send you right back to the psychiatric hospital!”
She was certain Allison had taken her phone.
Allison smiled with mockery, “Ronan, are you scared I’ll actually end up with Jareth?”She added, “Because Jareth is more capable than you. You’re jealous.”Allison kept going. “If I like someone else, I won’t be in your and Sherrie’s way. You should be happy.”Instead of standing there listening to Ronan’s rant, who was talking like she was the one who cheated, Allison walked into the living room.Ronan didn’t follow her. He was probably too pissed off. When Allison walked into the living room, she noticed extra people in the house. On the sofa, Ruth was chatting with a woman about her age.Ruth smiled when she saw Allison. She quickly beckoned her. “Look, our Ally is back. Ally, say hello to Ms. Genna.”Allison had never heard of anyone named Genna being close to the family. However, she didn’t want trouble, so she just said, “Hello, Ms. Genna.”Allison glanced at the bangle on Genna’s wrist. It looked well-made. The quality was good, but it wasn’t top-tier. She figured Genna was fr
Allison cried for several minutes. She let everything out. It was the first time she released all the emotions she had been holding back. When she slowly started to calm down, Nova went to get her some water.Allison sat on the couch. She looked around. The place was a small villa, and there was a garden on the terrace. It was still raining outside. Under the glow of the ambient lights, Allison could see a large rose tree swaying in the wind and rain. It was the wrong season. There were no flowers. There were only a few dried, dark red buds still hanging on. They clung stubbornly to the branches.Allison stared at them for a long time. She felt a deep, overwhelming pain of longing for her father.Nova followed her eyes out the window. She asked, “Miss, does it look familiar?”Allison snapped out of her thoughts. Nova was ten years older than her. That made her barely thirty now. She dressed simply. She dressed neatly.Nova came from a poor background, but she was hardworking. Ten year
When Ronan saw that she still didn’t react, he felt embarrassed. He stormed off, furious.Allison didn’t feel any better when he left. What was she supposed to do when Nigel came back? What if the Rogers family forced her into marriage? Legally, she was labeled mentally ill. Legally, her family had the right to control her. Even if she ran away, they could still drag her back. She hadn’t even escaped the nightmare of all the pain she suffered in the asylum. And now she was about to be thrown into the nightmare of marriage, too?She felt the warmth on her wrist. That pulled her out of her thoughts. She looked down and saw Jareth rubbing medicine between his palms. He was warming it up. Then he gently applied it to her swollen wrist.Jareth said, “I wasn’t the one who called Ronan here.”Allison didn’t answer him. Whether Ronan was called here or not didn’t matter. What happened already happened. What was done was done. There was no point in thinking about it over and over. There was no
Ronan sneered and ignored her. He stood up from his seat and walked up to her. He quickly grabbed her wrist. Then he turned to Jareth. “Jareth, she must be crazy to run away with you. I’m getting her out of here first. We can talk when I’m back.”Crazy? Just using the excuse of mental illness, he thought he could take me away as he pleases? How long is he going to keep throwing this accusation at me? Allison mentally thought as her eyes turned red with grievance and frustration.Struggling to free herself, Allison protested, “I’m not crazy! You’re falsely accusing me…”She couldn’t be taken away. She hadn’t done anything yet.Ronan retorted, “Not crazy? Then who was it that got sent to a psychiatric hospital?”Turning back to Jareth, he added, “Jareth, her patient ID at the psychiatric hospital is 2150. You can check it yourself. I’m taking her now before her family starts worrying.”Allison’s face filled with panic. Tears streamed down her cheeks. She couldn’t free herself from Ronan
Allison had traveled with her father since childhood and had seen all kinds of patients, so she was familiar with this kind of mentality.“There’s Datura in the medication you take regularly. I can smell it,” Allison dropped a bombshell before continuing, “Your physical functions should be fine. Your mobility issues are probably due to nerve paralysis.”She stole another glance at the driver and saw that he looked completely numb, as if he had already given up on saving her.Tightening her grip on the ballpoint pen in her hand, Allison held her breath and waited for Jareth’s reaction. She was obviously taking a gamble. The fact that Jareth hadn’t handed her over to his subordinates meant there was something about her that grabbed his attention. This was her chance, and she had to seize it.Jareth’s expression darkened slightly, but he didn’t get angry. “You can identify the ingredients of medicine just by smell?”Allison felt a twinge of disappointment because he hadn’t followed her l
Just as Allison leaned closer to the window to see who it was, she felt a presence. A pair of eyes. Strong, piercing, and fixed directly on her.Her back hit the seat as she instinctively shrank away, trying to disappear from sight. With a click, the taxi driver opened the door and fled away. No one dared to mess with these lunatics. Running into them was just plain bad luck.Allison reacted quickly and immediately jumped out from the other side to escape, but her physical skills were too poor. Before she could even climb onto the hood of the luxury car, someone pulled her down from behind.Instinctively, she curled up, wrapping her arms around her head as she stumbled and was dragged back by the collar. When she finally stood safely, she slowly looked up. Her eyes followed the black cane from the bottom, moving upward, until they reached Jareth’s face. The winter night's wind was cold. Jareth wore a black cashmere coat, and his long fingers rested on the silver handle of his cane, th
