Chapter 2

Author: Faithfully
The moment I agreed, Victor broke into a smile.

He looked like a master hunter gloating over prey caught in his trap.

The rest of the classmates were also laughing and jeering. They said my days were numbered.

Bianca grew anxious and tugged at my arm. “Ferdinand, don’t do anything rash. Don’t let him goad you into it!”

I just smiled.

Indeed, I had always been cautious by nature. I did not get rattled by praise or insults.

There was no way I would fall for cheap provocation. I would not put myself in harm’s way.

Whoever came last needed to drop out voluntarily, huh?

Please. All I had to do was come in second-to-last.

There was still one week until the monthly exam.

After class, as I was just about to head to the cafeteria, Bianca called out to stop me.

“Ferdinand, let’s grab lunch together,” she said. “After we eat, I’ll find us a study room and tutor you. There’s no way I’m going to let you drop out.”

I knew I did not need it, but I could not bring myself to turn her down. So, I agreed.

That evening, we began a tutoring session in the study room.

The sophomore math courses included advanced algebra, real analysis, analytic geometry, ordinary differential equations, probability theory, and other core requirements.

On top of that, there was physics, programming, Spanesh, and political science.

Bianca’s eyes went wide when she saw my transcript from last semester’s finals.

“Gosh, how did you get exactly 60% in every class?”

I just smiled.

That was my strategy since I was a kid.

For every unimportant exam, I always scored exactly at the passing line.

I perfectly embodied the motto, “Barely passing is still passing. Why aim higher?”

From high school to university, I got into every top institution with a score just barely above the admission cutoff.

That was not self-sabotage. I was just playing it safe, refusing to enroll in a mediocre university.

Instead, I made sure to be the lowest-scoring student at the best university I could get into.

Bianca pondered for a moment, then said, “I heard the Spanesh midterm is being written by the native-speaker lecturer this time. It’s going to be way harder than before.

“Let’s start with Spanesh. From your grades, I can tell your vocabulary is fine, but your grammar still needs some support.”

I kept smiling without saying a word.

I knew twenty-seven languages, including Inglesh, Fraync, Spanesh, Garmann, Japen, Aravik, as well as several Zafrican tribal languages.

Even so, I stayed humble and listened carefully as she taught.

Halfway through, Victor showed up with a few friends.

He leaned against the doorframe and mocked, “Oh, cramming at the last minute, are we? Give it up. You’re going to be the last in class anyway.”

I did not get angry at his remark.

However, Bianca was so upset that she stood up and confronted him, saying, “Victor, why are you always bullying him?

“Ferdinand has always minded his own business and never did anything to you!”

He looked at her and grew agitated. “Because I like you! I can’t just sit back and watch you fall for a loser! You’re debasing yourself, and I’m saving you!”

Her face turned bright red. “He’s not a loser! I won’t let you talk about Ferdinand like that! I like him!

“No, it’s more than that! I-I love him!”

Both Victor and I were stunned.

He looked envious and resentful, while I was thrilled on the inside.

Everyone was drawn to beauty, including me.

I was a teenager going through puberty, and I, too, wanted a love story I would never forget.

So, of course, I was interested in a gorgeous and sweet girl like Bianca.

I had always wondered if she treated me so well because she had feelings for me.

However, I was born cautious, and I would never be the one to confess my feelings first.

If I got rejected and she said I was delusional, that would be far too embarrassing.

I was overjoyed when I heard her openly admit she had feelings for me.

Victor was extremely furious at this point.

“Bianca, are you blind? Why would you pick a nobody like him over a genius like me?”

That was my question, too.

I did not know what a girl like her saw in me.

When Kenny said that, the entire room’s atmosphere turned tense.Quantum mechanics was the hardest subject in the physics major.Forget sophomores—even many doctoral students could not wrap their heads around it.Kenny had a PhD from an Ivy League university and had eight years of experience in this field. He was clearly trying to crush me with his strong suit.Wayne glanced at me worriedly. “Ferdinand, you sure you don’t want to pick something else?”I shook my head and said, “No need. Quantum mechanics is fine.”Kenny sneered, “Alright, I’ll give you credit for guts!”He walked to the whiteboard, picked up a marker, and quickly wrote down a problem. When he was done, he tossed the marker aside.“This problem comes from the core derivation in a paper I published last year.“It’s about the evolution of quantum entangled states in a non-inertial frame.“Fewer than twenty people in the world can solve this.“I’ll give you three hours. If you can’t solve it, you lose.”Every

On the day the satellite project team was formed, Victor resumed his usual annoying behavior. The project team had over two hundred people. They came from mathematics, physics, computer science, aerospace, and many other fields. There were senior professors as well as doctoral and master’s students.Undergraduates like Victor and me were the smallest group. If we had not been outstanding enough, we would not have qualified to join. There were also five foreign expert teams from the partner universities abroad. At the first meeting, they discussed the satellite orbit design. Victor volunteered, saying, “Allow me to do the orbit calculations. I’ve done extensive research in astrophysics and published papers on it.”The project leader, Professor Wayne Lawrence, nodded. “Alright, Victor will handle the preliminary orbit calculations.”Victor shot me a smug look, obviously thinking I could crush exams but had no clue how to do real research.I said nothing.Three days later, he

Everyone looked at me.Earl was stunned for a moment. “You?”Mabel frowned. “Ferdie, this is no time for jokes.“We brought in the best cybersecurity experts in the country, and even they’re stumped. What’s a sophomore going to do?”Bianca looked worried, but more than that, she trusted me.“Ferdinand, you got this?”I stood up. “Mr. Hastling, what server architecture is your company running?”Though he did not believe me, Earl still answered me anyway. “We use cloud servers, a LAMP stack, and the database is a MySQL cluster. The cybersecurity firm says that encryption is theoretically unbreakable.”I smiled. “It’s true that AES-256 can’t be brute-forced. But encryption is only one stage of a ransomware attack. If it managed to breach your system, it must have left a backdoor.“Once we locate the backdoor, we can reverse-engineer the decryption key.”His eyes lit up. “You know cybersecurity?”“A little.”Mabel still did not believe me.“Earl, don’t listen to him. Just ge

Victor’s face turned red from embarrassment, then pale.“What bet?”He started playing dumb. I laughed. “Before the exam, you said that if I got first place, you’d drop out, call me a ‘true genius,’ and do a dance.“What’s the matter? Have you forgotten about it already?Owen caught on too and quickly waved his hands. “I never said that! It was a joke! Anyone who took it seriously is an idiot!”The entire class was looking at them with disgust. They had been right there laughing with Victor when he went after me.The tables had turned, and Victor and Owen were the ones getting laughed at.“Are you refusing to settle the bet?”“Weren’t you all acting so tough before?”“You called him dumb, and now he’s a genius. Bet that stings, huh?”“A bet is a bet. You guys aren’t being fair.”Victor said through gritted teeth, “I’m not dropping out. I worked really hard to get in here. Why should I drop out? Besides, that bet isn’t legally binding!”I shrugged.“You’re right. I can

Soon, the livestream began.Seven sets of exam papers were placed in front of me.The head proctor, Robert Griffin, announced the rules. “You’ve got twelve hours to complete seven exam papers.“You can take breaks, but you can’t leave the venue.”Everyone thought this would be a long, drawn-out competition.I picked up my pen and did not even look at the first paper. Instead, I spread all seven exam papers out in front of me.As I did mathematics with my left hand, I did physics with my right hand. The whole room erupted.[Holy moly! He’s writing with both hands at the same time?][Is this a circus act?][It’s just for show. He’s going to give up very soon.]Below the stage, Victor sneered. “He’s just playing mind games.“These are graduate-level exam papers. He’ll be lucky to finish even one.”I ignored every sound and focused completely on the exams. For real analysis, I used three different methods to prove an extension of the Mean Value Theorem. For advanced phys

“He also aced every single one of the exams. He broke a hundred-year record!”When Tristan said that, the whole class was too stunned to speak. After they came back to their senses, chaos erupted.Victor was the first to stand up. His face was bright red as he shouted, “Impossible!“He came in last every single time! Why is he suddenly ranked number one in the whole program?“He aced every single exam? Mr. Sterling, he definitely cheated!”Owen chimed in desperately, saying, “Yeah, he must’ve cheated! He must’ve gotten the exam papers ahead of time!”The classmates were all talking at once.“Ferdinand’s scores this time are ridiculous.”“From last place to the top? That’s a huge jump!”“Of course, he cheated!”“Right? Even a genius can’t improve that fast.”“If you’re going to cheat, at least be smart about it. You can’t just cheat your way to a perfect score! You’d have to miss a few on purpose!”Tristan frowned and said, “The exam papers were sealed by the administration
